What Is Buried Must Remain (2022)
Just excellent
I've seen dozens of movies where people with cameras investigate a haunted house. This tops nearly all of them. The script and acting are excellent. The cinematography awesome. It's also about as original as you can get in this subgenre. I was really surprised.
It helps that it is situated in Lebanese culture. The characters are interesting and not just loudmouth stereotypes, like you find in English-language and a lot of Far-Eastern movies. Surprisingly, the inevitable prologue where the characters are introduced and interact was enjoyable rather than the usual fake and annoying. The history of the house and the events there are situated within colonialist history.
The director has a track record of making original and impactful movie.
The Innkeepers (2011)
Pointless
Well, if you're as unmotivated, unaccomplished, unintelligent, and ignorant as the two protagonists, you may like it. It has its moments, until you realize that what should be stepping stones are actually the high points. There's no actually story, which is in itself only somewhat condemnable, but there also several lines that point to a story. So, it's a bit like a book that tells you to see a footnote on another page, but there's no footnote there.
What confuses me more than a bit is why the male protagonist, in a move set in 2010-11, has built a website that looks just like websites from the late 90's, is using a 10-yr old version of Windows, and uses a 5-year old version of Firefox. If you update your software that infrequently and build home pages, as if GeoCities still exists, you deserve to be ended by scary monsters. Just sayin'.
[Rec] (2007)
Pretty good, but also kind of annoying
It's definitely scary. My only problem with it is how much of the movie involves chaotic yelling. Some characters just won't shut up, everyone yells, and they yell over each other. I get it, they are scared and confused, but it still seems way over the top.
I know the actors each only saw part of the script, just their own part. I think because of this they improvised a lot and felt a need to fill in the silence.
I suggest watching the original Spanish version with subtitles rather than the dubbed version. It makes the yelling and repetitive dialogue more bearable, unless you know Spanish, of course.
