I believe this novel is highly overrated. There is no substance or deeper message. The characters are so flawed, difficult to relate to, and on the surface. Their "problems" are shallow and based off of their own selfish decisions. It's about rich people fighting with other rich people. Like most people, I read it in high school. My teacher admitted to disliking it personally, but we read it to transition into higher level reading.
