Just like with the first installment, I was very entertained and I would recommend it to UF and PR fans. It has really good moments and I am hooked. I just can't bring myself to give it a higher rating for several reasons:
The whole thing is still extremely sexist.
The romantic situation feels like a mess and a sort of course correction. Once again, we are adding a new love interest to the mix, now we have 4 (although some of them are being pushed away from that role now). Yet again, he is a hot stranger that becomes INSTANTLY DEVOTED to her. I still don't understand this phenomenon. How is she doing this? Is this part of her special individual mage secret powers or what? At this point, I am really hoping for the series to turn into some kind of reverse harem situation like the Anita Blake series, or at least add some polyamorous relationships. A girl can hope, can't she? I am also getting impatient with the "heroin" making out with guys without going further than second base. What is this, a young-adult book? She is nearly 30 and she is surrounded by a bunch of hot supernatural domineering and loyal men lusting after her.. .Grow up already and live a little woman!
Between the 2 first books of this series, Silver gets attacked and kidnaped like a million times, and not just by the bad guys, but also by randoms. Her powers of attractions are unparalleled I tell you, and yet, the one who is supposed to have the sexual mojo is Justus, ha!
Silver gets herself into pretty stupid and avoidable situations, while the men make decisions that help these outcomes, like repeatedly leaving her alone, despite stating hundreds of times that she cannot be alone. Again, this kind of situations are hard to believe.
I still find Silver judgmental and hypocritical of sexual matters. Last time, she discriminated against sexually active women (she got offended by the possibility of someone thinking that she was "the kind of women who slept around" and said she wasn't a "whore"). I really hated that. This time, she goes to a sort or supernatural BDSM club and just proceeds to judge that whole scene. Again, I really don't appreciate that.
Despite all the above problems, I did enjoy the general story and pace, and I am curious to see where everything goes, specially with the men (still hoping).
I do find hard to believe Zoe/Silver's overall decision making. As well as I find very hard to believe the circumstances 3.5/5 stars
Very entertaining.
I do find hard to believe Zoe/Silver's overall decision making. As well as I find very hard to believe the circumstances Zoe/Silver finds herself in with Adam, Justus and Simon. How and why did she get such IMMEDIATE CARE, TRUST, LOYALTY AND LUST FROM 3 DIFFERENT STRANGERS, to the point where they assume complete responsibility for her and change their lives accordingly? Besides, her situation with Adam (and knox) and Justice (and Simon), are way too paralleled. It is the same storyline repeated twice, with different elements in there, but still exact mirrored images of each other: (view spoiler)[she randomly bumps into a hot male stranger (all involuntary damsel in distress like), who INSTANTLY takes her under his wing, care and home and presents her to his hot and nice, yet very different from him, loyal BFF. (hide spoiler)]
I am curious about the mythology of this world moving forwards, however there were some pretty weak points in this first installment that need to be addressed. One being the touching thing between mages and humans, it was never properly explained and it was obviously only there to cause tension between Adam and Zoe, besides, it was so inconsistent that it lost all its intention and it ended up just being confusing. Second, I still don't completely understand what a Mage is, does, how their magic works and how strong they are. It is all very vague. More on that, please! Third, there seems to be some kind of obsession for the way Mage do things vs the human way. Like with the names and such. I don't get why observing those social rules is a must. What is the big deal? I need more development on that.
Also, the whole thing is extremely sexist. She behaves and is treated like a little girl (of 29!) under the complete supervision and control of some random chauvinist strangers, and she goes with it just because. Furthermore, there is some slut shaming in there, which I don’t appreciate.
I am hooked though, so I am moving on to the next installment.

Meh. It has a few good and original ideas, unfortunately, they are just sitting there, the writer does nothing with them. We have a sentient house and a zombie bird, yet they are just curiosities for the background when they could be so much more, they could be the actual story. Had the writer chosen to lean more on them, I think the book could have been interesting enough to be worth reading. As it is, the plot is extremely uninteresting, the characters and bland, the pace is slow and there is barely anything happening. Oh, there is no romance either, which is a big disappointment for me too.
After 2 installments, I am done with this series. If you are a fan of UF you can go ahead and pass on this series.

I don't see this story going anywhere. There is no real advancement in characters development. Almost everything feels stilled. The series is simply not evolving fast enough for me and I have lost all interest as a result. We are in book 4 and everything is still superficial, the emotional deepness and tension keeps being but aside in favor of new action. Without a solid background story that matters and evolves, every new plot that we encounter in each installment feels unimportant. I just don't care anymore, I have been patience enough with this series, I am out.

I enjoyed the book, perhaps more than the first one, but again, I wasn't deeply connected to it, not without that deeper emotional element that in my opinion is missing here just as it was in book 1. In fact, after 2 books I am kind of shocked that we are getting no romance at all. There are some male with potential, and some sexual tension, but the story doesn't pause to explore those relationships at a deep, emotional or even carnal level. Very disappointing. I would also appreciate more character development for the people surrounding Jane, specially for Leo, Bruiser and Rick, since I am hopping for some kind of reverse-harem situation (not gonna happen) - like in the Anita Blake series.
The very end of the book wasn't satisfactory for me. I don't mean the conclusion of the plot, I mean the actual closure. (view spoiler)[So Jane goes off with Rick and we get nothing juicy from it. What? Firstly, we get no intimacy whatsoever between the two of them. Not emotional and not fiscal, what a let down. There is no way to connect to Rick enough to like him. (hide spoiler)] Secondly, Rick is my least favorite of the potencial male partners. He is just a human, just a cop, lame. While on the other hand, we have a master vampire and a few hundred years old "human". Fine, they both are pretty messed up, but come on! I am not reading a fantasy series to get interested by a mere human, seriously. Besides, Rick hasn't come up in a very good light to me, Jane sees him positively, mostly, but some of his actions make me dislike him. Like when (view spoiler)[she lets her guard down and shows him her pain for losing the kids and he goes and kisses her when she is most vulnerable. Big betrayal of trust in my opinion, to take advantage of someone in that situation. (hide spoiler)] I don't like it, I don't like him. I hope he doesn't last long as a romantic interest for Jane. So, yeah, not a great ending for me...
Moving forward, I am going to miss Molly and specially Angelina. Molly because it gives Jane that friendship/family bonding aspect that I think is so necessary for everyone in order to have a balanced life. And Angelina because, hello, she is an adorable super powerful little girl, duh.
Also, there are some religious elements here and as always, I never like those, specially in fantasy books. So that plays agains the book/series in my eyes.
On a side note, I found kind of funny a couple little aspects mention in this series that obviously came right out of the Twilight series: 1 - In the first couple of minutes of the book 1, a mechanic named Jacob is mentioned, he fixes 2 bikes for Jane that were junk. He keeps one as payment, the other went to her. 2 - She is a native american shapeshifter, a.k.a a skinwalker, but not a were. 3 - She smells delicious to vamps, more so than humans or other supernaturals. Does anyone hear any bells ringing or what?
I am moving on to the next installment now.
P.S.: I can't help comparing these books with the Night Huntress series. I feel like the Night Huntress series has all those elements that I find lacking here, and I am starting to get an itch to reread them for the hundredth time.

I liked Jane and Beast, but some of the Beasts parts dragged a bit long for me and I found myself unintentionally spacing out while listening to the audiobook.

There is not enough romantic relationship developed here to make it interesting as a romance book. It was superficial and barely there. What is more, the plot driving the vampire storyline could have been good if the male and female protagonists had actually some initiative in their personalities and did something, instead of being so gutless and wanting for things to happen or simply following orders. I think this lack of driving force in their natures made me lose interest in them and consequently, in the rest of the story bit by bit. I didn't connect to them as characters, nor as a romantic couple. I couldn't even like them either, since both of them had the power and resources to have been more active and decisive. Instead they acted like weak and coward people that couldn't make their own decisions or have their own motivations. They couldn't even be nice to each other. So nothing there to like. In the end, without strong leading characters, the plot felt short and lost relevance and meaning. I couldn't care for it any more.
Overall, I found the book quite disappointed in comparison to the first two installments of the series....more

I enjoyed this book, but I could have liked more romance in there. The plot was very interesting and entertaining. I liked Cyn as a character, even more than I did in book 1. She is an intelligent kick-ass and yet sensitive and emotionally open woman, although she doesn't really perceive herself that way. She is strong, capable, independent, smart, good hearted, self-reliant, self-sufficient and yet, perfectly capable of asking for help and giving it. Overall, it is a pretty good developed book. I can't give it more stars because I am a sucker for romantic intrigue and angst, and I found that a bit short in here for my taste, otherwise it is a pretty nice read.
I am sure I'll keep reading this series, although I have to say that neither book 1 or book 2 are Paranormal Romance. They might be sold as such, but they are clearly Urban fantasy books, which is fine with me too, I am just not sure what I will find in the next installments of the series.
P.S: The covers, book titles and specially the series title suck in my opinion. If it weren't for my Goodread's friends reviews, I would have never picked the first installment up. I am happy I did though....more

Great end to Nevada's storyline and great start to Catalina's. Although I will miss Nevada very much, now, I can't wait to read the new installments. I have really enjoyed all the characters journeys and I am looking forward for more, I am definitely not ready to let this family go. I am a bit sad Nevada's books are over, but I am also exited to see where the new storylines and new lead take us.
All in all, this series has very interesting plots, fascinating characters and great character development. These books keep you engaged and entertained to the last word. Very recomendable for Urban Fantasy lovers....more
