Maybe unfair to judge Lisa See books against one another, but having read some really rich historical fiction from her, this one didn’t do it for me. Maybe unfair to judge Lisa See books against one another, but having read some really rich historical fiction from her, this one didn’t do it for me. Set in America in the late 1930s and early 1940s, the word “oriental” is all over the place. I didn’t love being thrown into that time period of racial views, especially if we weren’t going to unpack it. It was very plot-driven by a sprinkle of drama in each girl’s corner, and I’m disappointed there wasn’t much of any coverage of life in the Japanese internment camps. Maybe the story tried to cover too long of a time period for that....more

I had no idea it would be so insightful, deep, and rich content/reflection. I felt Chanel’s abandonment, curled up in the trenches, inability to find the will to go on about her daily life. I also felt her reasoning for these lows, her family’s love and presence, and the victories and inspiration in finding happiness and an outpouring of support never expected....more

Excellent self-reflection. Towards the end it felt more like a self-help book journey, but the beginning was raw and illustrative of CPTSD. I’m so sadExcellent self-reflection. Towards the end it felt more like a self-help book journey, but the beginning was raw and illustrative of CPTSD. I’m so sad for Foo that it seems a generational and cultural divide set her up for a toxic relationship with each of her parents, in different ways. Not to mention sifting past all that and at the core, finding a woman who simply shouldn’t have been a mother. Foo’s support system in adulthood is a saving grace....more
