I really enjoyed book 1 but struggled with this one. The author definitely likes to write the same MC every time and this is the(2.5) This was rough.

Unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of the tone/humour as I get tired of it pretty quickly. Princess Bride/Tress of the Emerald Sea vibes which are popular but to be they feel like "children's books for adults".

But mostly I'm relieved that this wasn't another popular romance book with really emotionally immature characters. It's not as good as book 1 but I'm glad I read it. (I still need to read book 2 so we'll see how it compares!)...more

I feel like I'm overall over YA books due to the tropes annoying me but I got curious and wanted to see if this was worth the hype. While it won't become an all time fave, I can see why it's popular. It did give me vibes of older fantasy/dystopian books I grew up reading. It's very readable and I'm intrigue enough about the world/magic system to pick up the second book.
