THIS BOOK!!! THIS BOOK RIGHT HERE! Oh my god is everything I love about a romance book with the added awesomeness of flawlessly made up magical PEOPLE! Whew omigod...ok...why is this book so awesome?
1. Are you a sucker for enemies to lovers? 2. Are you a sucker for a sloooooow burn? 3. Do you like supernatural and/or fantasy themes? 4. Do you love a villain who can talk witty, ooze sexuality and make your panties melt with one singular look? 5. Do you love a kick ass heroine who is not afraid to admit when her nether regions are speaking to her?
THEN YOU'LL LOVE THIS AMAZING F***ing BOOK!

So this is my first Ilona Andrews book and I am completely and BEYOND addicted to the point where it is KILLING me that I can't get to the second book like RIGHT NOW because of challenge commitments, NO MATTER...whew there's only three books right now so it'll make the feeling last longer right? That's what I keep telling myself.
So we have Connor "Mad" Rogan... [image] And yes I am 100% convinced that Stephen Amell is BY FAR the most perfect Rogan, do NOT try to sway me! *ahem* Mad Rogan is just so deliciously evil but NOT evil I can't even describe it. He's the perfect amount of badiness that makes you not hate him but become beyond intrigued with him. He has telekinetic abilities and has a bit of powers of that of an empath...he is considered a "Prime" which in this series all the beings with magic are categorized into how powerful of magic-doers they are and of course Rogan is THE highest you could possibly be! Even his looks could split you in half he's THAT good.
Then we have Nevada Baylor... [image]
Who is basically a human lie detector and not even close to exploring the depth of her magic but her family runs an Investigation firm where she mostly spies on cheating spouses and finds people who are committing insurance fraud. She knows how to handle herself in a fight, use a gun, and calls BS when she sees it - I LOVED her!
How Rogan and Nevada meet is between mutual wants...through Adam Pierce, Nevada gets hired to bring in Pierce for reasons I won't spoil and Rogan as well needs Pierce for other reasons that I won't spoil...it is a delicious concoction created in perfect harmony to bring these two who are oil and water together to realize their undeniable FATES that MUST be intertwined!!!! But alas, Nevada in particular cannot stand Rogan and thinks he a scoundrel - but does this stop our sexy Rogan? Oh no...YOU JUST WAIT!!! omigod I can't even TELL you because it'd spoil it just know there is some steamy steamy stuff and they never even have SEX in this book! NO SEX people!
Anywho...the book just reads so smoothly. I loved the inner monologue of Nevada the entire time, the descriptions of people and elements were spot on and not over done and the dialogue was just OUT OF THIS WORLD. Seriously I applaud this book and it made me smile, actually smile so many friggin' times my CHEEKS hurt. It doesn't hurt that Nevada describes Rogan's body so vividly...repeated times...

I cannot recommend this book enough, it is just beyond anything I could even continue to write about without taking away from it. I finished this book in 2.5 days with which me...is seriously business. I don't get done with books that fast unless I MEAN BUSINESS. READ IT!!!!!...more

This book was SO much fun! From the very beginning there was amazingly written dialogue from all characters that was both eloquent and witty. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Heroine's inner monologues with herself! So for this story we have two FBI agents from different departments who met at the academy back in the day...did not like one another, and now have been assigned to an undercover op together. PERFECT formula!
Our hero, Agent John Shepard: [image] Who is described as looking like Thor by our heroine so it was IMPOSSIBLE to not think of Chris Hemsworth the entire rest of the time I read the book, ha! He is an all around bad ass who works in the organized crime unit in Chicago and has hopes and dreams to work for the Hostage Rescue Team (the best of the best) especially after a certain event happens in his life. He is a former Army ranger and is just the best at everything he does, he's even super smart too, but apparently not as smooth-talking as our heroine. He is witty, sexy, and comes across as a rather really nice guy but still oozes alpha material. [image]
And then we have our heroine, Agent Jessica Harlow: [image] Who in her own right is also an all around bad ass. She may not have been the most athletic at the academy but she shined for her intuition, smarts and charisma in handling people. She is a former lawyer and uses her courtroom skills to shine. She works in the corruption department, working to take down corrupted blue collar types. She is a great heroine because she's strong, stands her ground, but is not so feminist that it is annoying. She is willing to let down her guard and she is just incredibly adorable when she starts falling for John. [image]
These two characters are just adorable together. They are witty, romantic, and their love scenes are schmexy as hell. Add onto the fact that their love blossoms in a beach setting in Jacksonville, FL...and it all makes for the perfect chemical combination:
Adventure?✔ Hate turned to love?✔ Schmexy scenes?✔ Witty dialogue?✔ Romance?✔

This was EVERYTHING I want in a contemporary romance and more. Hate to love, a slow burn (that seems like a fast one at first), mystery, adventure, great dialogue, swoon worthy alpha Hero, EVERYTHING!
Ok whew...now to the details...I can't say TOO much about the plot without giving some juicy details away but we have CIA agent Nick Andris:
This guy, right here is just a great, well rounded Hero character. He's pure alpha male but not a complete jerk, but still has enough dirt and grime to him that doesn't make him a complete push over either. Comes across as completely respectable and a man who is out to get the job done. He's been assigned to spy on the heroine, Holly Bradshaw:
She is as equally respectable as Nick, in that she is a well rounded heroine character that is strong, smart and doesn't use her sensuality and good looks for the wrong reasons. She still maintains that sensuality while remaining respectable and just completely bad ass. LOVED her and loved her and Nick together, they just made complete sense and meshed so well together even when they weren't meshing!
This book will make you laugh, make you teary eyed, make you bite your cuticles even at certain points and I guarantee you will absolutely swoon over Nick Andris and his steamy Russian self! If you like stories that involve federal agents taking custody of one or the other and a romance blossoming from it - TOTALLY the story for you my friend!
32 hours of audio later and here I am, finally finished! WOW what a ride! So I am reviewing this from two aspects...one being that I have seen the 2 s32 hours of audio later and here I am, finally finished! WOW what a ride! So I am reviewing this from two aspects...one being that I have seen the 2 seasons of Outlander TV show prior to listening to this book, and the talent that is the narrator, Davina Porter. Her ability to switch between a female British accent, several different male Scottish accents, and back and forth is just ASTONISHING, she very much made it that much more enjoyable. True talent! [image] Without trying to give any spoilers for those that have not seen the show or read any of the books thus far, this is such a romantic, epic and near tragic tale with time travel through mystical stones. Claire Randall is on holiday in Scotland with her husband in the 20th century. Her husband is an avid history buff and knows his family history even dating all the way back to the 18th century. Well you can guess she touches these mystical stones in Scotland and ends up transported back to the near end of the Highlander era, conveniently in the 18th century! [image] One thing I will say for the show compared to the books...whoever was in charge of casting, BRAVO! About the only character that did not match the book's description for looks was Dougal. Jamey, Claire, Randall, they are ALL just completely on base for their descriptions which makes me very giddy. Jamey may be a tad older than he is in the books but the actor who portrays Jamey is just too perfect to even begin to complain! [image] This novel has it all, mystery, intrigue, action/adventure, romance, betrayal (not between the main characters otherwise I would've chucked it) and the beautiful landscape of Scotland for its story locale. The kilts and Scottish accents is also a big draw for me, especially if you listen to the audio accompaniment! [image] The steamy scenes that the show is famous for, are just as steamy in word format within the novel and again Davina Porter does eloquent narration and style. There are a few scenes which depict torture that I will warn for anyone who has not seen the show, if this is something that bothers you but it is with the times in 18th century Scotland with the red coats. There is a scene towards the end that is particularly hard to picture, for those that have seen season 1 of Outlander you know exactly what I am referring to! (view spoiler)[Randall's "loving" of Jamey. BLECH. (hide spoiler)]
Seriously do yourself a favor and check out this book, but also listen to the audio...being able to submerse yourself within Scotland by hearing the amazingly done Scottish accent's from Porter's narration is WELL worth it! Here is one more GIF of Jamey to make sure his vision is planted in your brain because he's just too perfect!
