THIS BOOK!!! THIS BOOK RIGHT HERE! Oh my god is everything I love about a romance book with the added awesomeness of flawlessly made up magical PEOPLE! Whew omigod...ok...why is this book so awesome?
1. Are you a sucker for enemies to lovers? 2. Are you a sucker for a sloooooow burn? 3. Do you like supernatural and/or fantasy themes? 4. Do you love a villain who can talk witty, ooze sexuality and make your panties melt with one singular look? 5. Do you love a kick ass heroine who is not afraid to admit when her nether regions are speaking to her?
THEN YOU'LL LOVE THIS AMAZING F***ing BOOK!
So this is my first Ilona Andrews book and I am completely and BEYOND addicted to the point where it is KILLING me that I can't get to the second book like RIGHT NOW because of challenge commitments, NO MATTER...whew there's only three books right now so it'll make the feeling last longer right? That's what I keep telling myself.
So we have Connor "Mad" Rogan... [image] And yes I am 100% convinced that Stephen Amell is BY FAR the most perfect Rogan, do NOT try to sway me! *ahem* Mad Rogan is just so deliciously evil but NOT evil I can't even describe it. He's the perfect amount of badiness that makes you not hate him but become beyond intrigued with him. He has telekinetic abilities and has a bit of powers of that of an empath...he is considered a "Prime" which in this series all the beings with magic are categorized into how powerful of magic-doers they are and of course Rogan is THE highest you could possibly be! Even his looks could split you in half he's THAT good.
Then we have Nevada Baylor... [image]
Who is basically a human lie detector and not even close to exploring the depth of her magic but her family runs an Investigation firm where she mostly spies on cheating spouses and finds people who are committing insurance fraud. She knows how to handle herself in a fight, use a gun, and calls BS when she sees it - I LOVED her!
How Rogan and Nevada meet is between mutual wants...through Adam Pierce, Nevada gets hired to bring in Pierce for reasons I won't spoil and Rogan as well needs Pierce for other reasons that I won't spoil...it is a delicious concoction created in perfect harmony to bring these two who are oil and water together to realize their undeniable FATES that MUST be intertwined!!!! But alas, Nevada in particular cannot stand Rogan and thinks he a scoundrel - but does this stop our sexy Rogan? Oh no...YOU JUST WAIT!!! omigod I can't even TELL you because it'd spoil it just know there is some steamy steamy stuff and they never even have SEX in this book! NO SEX people!
Anywho...the book just reads so smoothly. I loved the inner monologue of Nevada the entire time, the descriptions of people and elements were spot on and not over done and the dialogue was just OUT OF THIS WORLD. Seriously I applaud this book and it made me smile, actually smile so many friggin' times my CHEEKS hurt. It doesn't hurt that Nevada describes Rogan's body so vividly...repeated times...

I cannot recommend this book enough, it is just beyond anything I could even continue to write about without taking away from it. I finished this book in 2.5 days with which me...is seriously business. I don't get done with books that fast unless I MEAN BUSINESS. READ IT!!!!!...more
WOW - call me an official Julie James fan now! This book was SO much fun! From the very beginning there was amazingly written dialogue from all characWOW - call me an official Julie James fan now! This book was SO much fun! From the very beginning there was amazingly written dialogue from all characters that was both eloquent and witty. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Heroine's inner monologues with herself! So for this story we have two FBI agents from different departments who met at the academy back in the day...did not like one another, and now have been assigned to an undercover op together. PERFECT formula!
Our hero, Agent John Shepard: [image] Who is described as looking like Thor by our heroine so it was IMPOSSIBLE to not think of Chris Hemsworth the entire rest of the time I read the book, ha! He is an all around bad ass who works in the organized crime unit in Chicago and has hopes and dreams to work for the Hostage Rescue Team (the best of the best) especially after a certain event happens in his life. He is a former Army ranger and is just the best at everything he does, he's even super smart too, but apparently not as smooth-talking as our heroine. He is witty, sexy, and comes across as a rather really nice guy but still oozes alpha material. [image]
And then we have our heroine, Agent Jessica Harlow: [image] Who in her own right is also an all around bad ass. She may not have been the most athletic at the academy but she shined for her intuition, smarts and charisma in handling people. She is a former lawyer and uses her courtroom skills to shine. She works in the corruption department, working to take down corrupted blue collar types. She is a great heroine because she's strong, stands her ground, but is not so feminist that it is annoying. She is willing to let down her guard and she is just incredibly adorable when she starts falling for John. [image]
These two characters are just adorable together. They are witty, romantic, and their love scenes are schmexy as hell. Add onto the fact that their love blossoms in a beach setting in Jacksonville, FL...and it all makes for the perfect chemical combination:
Adventure?✔ Hate turned to love?✔ Schmexy scenes?✔ Witty dialogue?✔ Romance?✔
SECOND time reading: Listened to the audiobook version this time...STILL AMAZING! Such a good book.
Ok...I don't even know where to START with this revSECOND time reading: Listened to the audiobook version this time...STILL AMAZING! Such a good book.
Ok...I don't even know where to START with this review, I am so absolutely floored right now. Ever have that feeling that you found the most amazing book that matches ALL of your romance novel likes and you're so happy to finish it and then so fearful that NOTHING else will compare that you read and it just ruined it ALL for you? That's how I feel right now.
SUCH an amazing SUPER slow burn! NO insta-loves in this house and that is JUST how I like it! The story centers around Josh and Lucy while remaining in the POV of Lucy the entire time (though I TRULY wish we could've gotten some Josh POV, maybe we still will hint hint Sally Thorne ;) )
So first we have Lucy...a super nice (to all others except Josh), super petite, funny, witty and just all around purely endearing heroine who has a passion for Smurfs and strawberries.
Then enter our leading man...Josh. Ooooh Josh, he is probably by far one of my favorite heroes that I've read in a contemporary setting ever. He's got just the right amount of angst, is not super possessive but still has just enough to make you swoon, charming, sweet(but not TOO sweet), funny, and had some very amazing actions that he took...oh and he's littered with muscles, that never hurts! I also love his constant quips about how short and small she is, especially compared to him it is SO flipping adorable.
So these two work as executive assistants to two different CEO's of a now merged publishing company and they work in the same office space and have hated each other since the moment they laid eyes on each other. What ensues is a barrage of very well written banter and romantic comedy amazement. I still cannot believe this is the author's FIRST novel it was so well written!
One of my favorite aspects was the inner monologue that we got from Lucy's character, especially her thoughts towards Josh and her undying curiosity for what lay underneath the button down color rotation dress shirts that he wore every day. She didn't disappoint in her inner reaction upon first glance either...
Underneath that t-shirt is a body that could fog an elderly librarian's glasses. I think my underwear is curling off me like burning paper.
And they make sure to mention that Josh's pristine physique is all due to his consistent boredom which leads him to the gym...a lot...A LOT, a lot.
When I say this novel is a slow burn...don't think I mean it takes 50 pages for something to happen, no no my friends it is a SLOOOOOW burn which makes it all that much more appealing to me. Just when you think something is going to happen and you're biting your lip in anticipation...BAM, you get to feel JUST like Lucy does, every single time...and it works delightfully. Trust me when I say...it is WORTH the wait.
I'm going to die tonight. Please take your pants off. -I want that embroidered on a pillow.
Amidst the hilarity there are also hidden secrets about Josh that we are kept in the lurch about just as Lucy is and I found myself JUST as curious as Lucy to find out what the hell Josh was always noting up his planner for!
All in all this book is a goldmine for fans of "enemies to lovers", slow burn romances, romantic comedies, not overly angsty, and an alpha male that isn't over the top. If these are elements you love in a contemporary romance story I guarantee you will NOT want to put this book down. Sally Thorne you need to get those fingers moving on that keyboard - need more of your stories now!
um WOW wow...wow. Such a FUN FUN read this was! [image]
The number one thing I loved about this book was Tara Sivec's way of writing dialogue, PURE goldum WOW wow...wow. Such a FUN FUN read this was! [image]
The number one thing I loved about this book was Tara Sivec's way of writing dialogue, PURE gold! Not only was the dialogue witty and hilarious but it was also just eloquently and comedically timed perfectly, that's hard to do in my opinion without the visual aid such as a movie with actors.
The heroine character (Claire) was so real and I found myself knowing the feelings and embarrassing moments she was going through and laughing out loud at some of the moments she endured. Claire has so many instances where she gets just completely lost in her thoughts and I do mean the deep end and comes off as this huge worry wart, reeling herself back in to focus on the situation at hand.
"I might need some help getting nuded," I said through snorts of laughter. "Did you say neutered?"
Furthermore, the hero (Carter) of the story is equally as charming and lovable! Plus, you get the points of view from BOTH characters which I personally have never even read in a book before. It may be the exact same situation but you not only get to read from the perspective of Claire but then the next chapter may start in the middle of the same situation but in turn be from Carter's perspective. You know these two are meant for each other when they BOTH have inner dialogue with themselves that leaves them distracted and potentially blurting out meaningless drivel, Carter was no exception to this.
"I don't want the boogey man to get you and I hate clowns," I blurted out.
Overall this book is just a delightful read for anyone that enjoys romance or comedy and isn't afraid of a dirty joke here and there. It is the epitome of romantic comedy with a good dose of realism, naughty bits, and amazing character development and dialogue. Highly recommend!
MAJOR kudos Tara Sivec, I WILL be reading more of your books! [image] ...more
This book had me sold just in the pure fact it was a contemporary romance set in Scotland. I give Samantha Young major kudos fOverall reaction: [image]
This book had me sold just in the pure fact it was a contemporary romance set in Scotland. I give Samantha Young major kudos for developing the story with characters that are supposed to have Scottish accents without making it insanely difficult to read. I found myself (when the area allowed it otherwise I may have come across as a nutcase) reading the dialogue aloud at times to fully grasp what the lines may have sounded like in the Scottish accent versus my American accent, though I'm sure my husband would scoff at my petty attempt at a proper Scots accent but the author also types one line...and one line only in the book that is phonetically typed to the accent and it is a good reminder in the middle of the book that YES remember they are Scottish! :) [image]
The chemistry between the two main characters in the book are amazing, Joss occasionally made me want to reach through the book and strangle her in the moments that she just would NOT admit to feelings, demons, etc. but the fact it gave opportunity for Braden to swoop in and be his charming Scottish self, made me forgive her immediately. I physically found myself smiling as I read this book and again finished it very quickly which to me is always a good sign that I thoroughly enjoy a book as I get so engulfed it takes precedence.
1.Are you a sucker for Celtic locales? 2.Do you enjoy contemporary romances? 3.Are you a fan of characters that take more then one chapter to develop any kind of a relationship? 4.Is it even more enjoyable if said relationship started out that they can hardly stand each other at first?
Answer yes to ANY of these? You'll love it! :) ...more
Wow that's the fastest I've gotten through a book in AGES. So this book is honestly a love it or hate it kind of book kind of like the main charactersWow that's the fastest I've gotten through a book in AGES. So this book is honestly a love it or hate it kind of book kind of like the main characters love/hate relationship style...but I am huge sucker for that kind of banter between two characters in a story. I call it the Han/Leia relationship because that's the first time I witnessed a relationship like that when I saw the Star Wars movies and I can't get enough of it. [image] If you like characters that can't stand each other and then fall in love and just derail and find each other again on a crazy love train, you will LOVE this book.I found every waking moment to pick up this book and further read into these two's crazy relationship which had me subconsciously giggling like a school girl. [image] I have only have two complaints: 1. He calls her by her nickname of "Pidgeon" WAY too many times and 2. For a tough guy bravado there are moments that he comes across just pathetically in the way that he "begs" her during certain situations... [image] ...other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to see this turned into a TV series! #BeautifulDisasterMovie...more
32 hours of audio later and here I am, finally finished! WOW what a ride! So I am reviewing this from two aspects...one being that I have seen the 2 s32 hours of audio later and here I am, finally finished! WOW what a ride! So I am reviewing this from two aspects...one being that I have seen the 2 seasons of Outlander TV show prior to listening to this book, and the talent that is the narrator, Davina Porter. Her ability to switch between a female British accent, several different male Scottish accents, and back and forth is just ASTONISHING, she very much made it that much more enjoyable. True talent! [image] Without trying to give any spoilers for those that have not seen the show or read any of the books thus far, this is such a romantic, epic and near tragic tale with time travel through mystical stones. Claire Randall is on holiday in Scotland with her husband in the 20th century. Her husband is an avid history buff and knows his family history even dating all the way back to the 18th century. Well you can guess she touches these mystical stones in Scotland and ends up transported back to the near end of the Highlander era, conveniently in the 18th century! [image] One thing I will say for the show compared to the books...whoever was in charge of casting, BRAVO! About the only character that did not match the book's description for looks was Dougal. Jamey, Claire, Randall, they are ALL just completely on base for their descriptions which makes me very giddy. Jamey may be a tad older than he is in the books but the actor who portrays Jamey is just too perfect to even begin to complain! [image] This novel has it all, mystery, intrigue, action/adventure, romance, betrayal (not between the main characters otherwise I would've chucked it) and the beautiful landscape of Scotland for its story locale. The kilts and Scottish accents is also a big draw for me, especially if you listen to the audio accompaniment! [image] The steamy scenes that the show is famous for, are just as steamy in word format within the novel and again Davina Porter does eloquent narration and style. There are a few scenes which depict torture that I will warn for anyone who has not seen the show, if this is something that bothers you but it is with the times in 18th century Scotland with the red coats. There is a scene towards the end that is particularly hard to picture, for those that have seen season 1 of Outlander you know exactly what I am referring to! (view spoiler)[Randall's "loving" of Jamey. BLECH. (hide spoiler)]
Seriously do yourself a favor and check out this book, but also listen to the audio...being able to submerse yourself within Scotland by hearing the amazingly done Scottish accent's from Porter's narration is WELL worth it! Here is one more GIF of Jamey to make sure his vision is planted in your brain because he's just too perfect!

I kept having to look at the back cover at the picture of the author and her name to keep remembering that this book was based off of a woman's REAL childhood life and these events ACTUALLY happened. The book read so much like a story rather than a memoir or biography that it was just completely surreal. Her upbringing was anything but sound but at the same time I commended her constantly for taking the courage to move away from her parents, conquer big bad New York City and not only not live in poverty any longer but go so far as to become a published author and journalist. Great book, definitely recommend giving it a shot!...more
