Seriously, only Sparks can take such mundane activities and somehow make them super entertaining and keep us invested in the characters. I read The Guardian a year or so ago and this book was a bit of a change for him in that it was a romance, but also a suspense thriller. Well Safe Haven is also one of those books and I truly think this style is superb for Sparks.
I have to respect the heroine, Erin/Katie for having the courage to run away from an abusive husband and for having the wits about her to pull off the task. Was she stupid for getting into the relationship in the first place? Sure, but he was all perfect and nice when they met.

She winds up in South Port, NC (North Carolina shouldn't surprise you if you've read more than one Sparks book ;) ) where she shacks it up in a little cottage next to only one other cottage that belongs to Jo, whom she befriends later.
The Hero, Alex is swoon worthy. He has two kids, is a widower, owns an old country store and is just the sweetest thing ever.

Alex is an amazing father and despite having lost his wife to cancer several years prior to the story, still manages to keep it all together. His world gets turned upside down when he meets Katie and has no idea of her jarring past or that her ex is actively searching for her.
Not to give away anymore plot, let me just say...the romance is what you'd expect from Sparks. I DID cry...again, I thought I'd wouldn't this time but have come to accept that it WILL happen every time with a Sparks novel. I listened to this on audiobook and Rebecca Lowman is SO GOOD. She narrated Dark Places by Gillian Flynn as well and I can't say enough about her talents!

I was on the edge of my seat for several moments in this book as Sparks managed to weave this incredible story that flip flops between the present and memories of her past with her ex. We also get amazing insight into how she planned her escape and how Kevin eventually finds her. You also get to be in the mind of the psycho path that is her ex, Kevin and it is a scary place, let me tell you.
Incredibly well written and seriously my favorite Sparks book that I have read so far. That is even over The Notebook, yes. Just so GOOD.
PS - the movie isn't NEAR as good. Not even close. So if you have seen the movie, but haven't read the book, do yourself a huge favor!...more
