Such a fun, page turning read that focuses on all of the above. It was everything I wanted and more, and I would kill for a prequel novella or something that focuses on the beginnings of how "it" all started with Puckeen.

My coworkers and I were really excited for this after we all read 'MotherThing' by the same author. We all got so excited when we all got approved for the ARC of this.
But it just didn't deliver for me. Maybe I'm not the target audience to relate to the content as I don't have children nor do I ever plan to. But I found the characters, and story to be so directionless.
I'll still pick up whatever Ainslie Hogarth puts out next, but maybe with more contained expectations ...more

'Cold, Black, & Infinite' is truly everything you want in a horror short story collection. It's dark, fun, and at times utterly disturbingly grim.
But mostly it's just pretty much perfect. There's something for everyone in this collection, and that's what makes it so enjoyable. I only skipped one story in the collection (a very religious based cosmic horror), and that was just due to personal preference and nothing to do with the story itself.
I also really enjoyed reading the 'behind the scenes' inspiration for each story at the end of the book! It's really interesting to get peak inside the authors brain and see how all these ideas came to fruition. The trigger warning list at the end was also awesome to see included.
Overall, I loved this so so so so very much and I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this author in the future....more

Absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful. Possibly one of the best explorations of trauma and mental illness, and how it affects a family over time. Seeing the author's insight into how deplorable the mental health sector is in America was genuinely infuriating.
I'm really having a hard time capturing my thoughts on this book because of how stunning it is.

I have to say that the gothic eerie setting of this book had me intrigued from the jump. I loved the Lizzie Borden-esque mystery of did this now disabled and harmless old lady REALLY murder her whole family as a teen girl? Or is there something more sinister to the story?
Unfolding slowly and methodically, this book can often feel slow and certain aspects can feel pointless to the plot, but by the end I was thankful for the slow burn reveal of every twist and turn. It's a fun classic Sager read, and I imagine that it'll leave thriller/mystery fans satisfied by the last page....more

This book follows Aidan Thomas, he's your average suburban father who's just trying to do the best that he can to comfort his daughter after the death of her mother. While also attempting to continue to hide the woman he calls "Rachel" that he's kept hidden in their back shed for 5 years. Isolated and near broken, "Rachel" is dragged into a ruse of normalcy as Aidan forces her to pretend to be an old friend renting the spare room in his new home. Now hidden in plain sight, "Rachel" collides with the normal life Aidan has created amidst his evil acts. Tension bleeds off the page as Aidan attempts to keep his daughter from discovering the secrets that would destroy him.
This book truly captures that common description "he seemed like a nice, normal, quiet guy", that people often say when a white man does any horrendous act. It's completely chilling and captivating to see all the different views people have of Aidan, and the persona's he's created to stay hidden.
I truly can't believe that this is a debut novel, and I'm giving a million kudos to the author for coming out the gate with quite possibly the best read of 2023....more

I don't know if I fully have words to describe this graphic memoir. I related to the contents of it way too much for my own comfort in regards to the mental health side. Some of these short stories are just hauntingly disturbing, but all of them are unsettling. I was pulled into each one abruptly each time as I waited for whatever horror filled nightmare I was going to read about this time.
I completely loved it of course. 10/10. Eric LaRocca is an instant read and an instant buy for me forever.

The beginning of this book had me completed hooked, and I love the premise. I'm just not so sure I completely love the execution. I ended up getting lost during the last 70 pages or so and at that point I finished it soley because I was in so deep.
I didn't really care for any of the characters so nothing felt high stakes, and the twists didn't land as well as they could have as a result....more

I have never been so excited to be approved for an ARC before! Eric LaRocca quickly became one of my favourite authors last year when I was introduced to "Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke and Other Misfortunes". I nominated that one as my favourite release of the year at my library, so you could say that my expectations for follow up books were high.
AND BOY WERE THEY MET.
Everything The Darkness Eats was everything I wanted and more. Perfectly macabre and yet I loved the ethereal mysticism that was in play as well. I will forever be in awe of the way LaRocca can describe simple everyday things in a manner that leaves you feeling cracked open and raw.
Needless to say, I loved it. I can now cancel my hold request at my library and send it straight to my staff picks instead....more

Can we talk about this cover first of all??? It's beautiful, that's all I can say. Just perfection.
This is also one of those times that you can judge a book by its cover, because the inside matches the outside. This feels like a love letter to classic retro horror, and yet something so new and intriguing.
It gave me 'Midnight Mass' (Netflix TV show) and 'From' (Epix TV series) vibes, so if you're into those tv shows then you'll probably really enjoy this.
The mystery of this island (that is time locked in the 90s, how cool of a concept is that??) is so intriguing, and I really loved the inclusion of interview, and chat log chapters.
This is definitely going on my staff picks list at my work ...more
