I loved Chung's first memoir, but this felt like an expression of her feelings about her parents' deaths in a way that didn't feel either transcendent or broader than her own experience nor did it feel specific such that it was interesting.
I would maybe recommend it if you're looking for someone else dealing with grief....more

I typically don't think much about class or education in the context of my own family as both of my parents have bachelor's degrees, my dad has a PhD and mom has some grad school. Reading about Ernaux's father and his relationship with words and fear of being perceived as a country person made me reflect on how my mom may have related to my grandpa.
Overall I enjoyed this book; it was interesting to hear about the life of someone in the early to mid 1900s in relatively rural France....more
