First in the Friendship Harbor Mysteries cozy mystery series and revolving around Sophie LaFleur, the former star of a TV mystery series. This series is set in Maine.

My Take
Jeez, I expected more from McCarthy. The TV show Sophie starred in was Murder, She Texted and the character she played was Jennifer Flescher. Makes me wonder how much else McCarthy/Love pinched.

Maybe the authors meant for this reference to make sense when Sophie jumps into playing detective. Lame. Very lame.

Sophie is spending money like there's no tomorrow. She has no idea how much income she can expect from the pub, so combining this with how she immediately jumped into exploring the mystery of who killed this guy, and I'm left cold. It's a story with little sense of reality.

McCarthy/Love never do let on as to why Dean is so cold. I guess it's a cliffhanger.

On the plus side, Sophie is an interesting combination of her let-it-all-hang-out grammy and her prudent and classic mother. And the llama is a fun addition.

McCarthy/Love use first person protagonist point-of-view from Sophie's perspective, so we know her thoughts, emotions, and the action in any scenes in which she's present. Or, when she picks up clues to the murderer, mostly by eavesdropping at the funeral assembly that reveals contradicting yet confirming gossip about the deceased. A person who was liked but of whom most were wary.

Murder Drama With Your Llama has a reasonable pace, but it's annoying in its superficiality. I never felt any connection to the characters, well, other than being irritated by Sophie.

The Story
Sophie LaFleur is ready for a scene change, and when she discovers she’s inherited both a house and pub in quaint Friendship Harbor, Maine, she’s thrilled. This is exactly what she needs — fresh start, fresh air, and fresh faces.

What she doesn't need is a trouble-causing llama named Jack Kerouac or a hunky, disinterested pub manager who just so happens to live in her guesthouse.

Just when you think it can’t possibly get worse, it does.

Now the new girl in town is public enemy number #2. The honor of #1 currently belongs to her inherited, ornery llama, which just so happens to be the suspect in the death of a well-loved, elderly man.

Except Sophie quickly learns he isn’t as well loved as she first thought. She also suspects that his death might not have been at the foot of her cantankerous llama.

The Characters
The strait-laced Sophie LaFleur, an out-of-work actress from Murder, She Texted, has inherited her grandmother's house and pub. Oliver Maddox is her best friend whose career-making TV series was back in the day in The High Jinx of Hayley and Jake. Sunny LaFleur is Sophie's grammy, an old hippie — she was on the cover of the Woodstock album. Jack Kerouac is her remaining llama, now that Janis Joplin has died. Leah is Sophie's strait-laced mother, a realtor, who's still in California.

Steamy's is . . .
. . . Grammy's pub that Dean "McSteamy" Jordan manages. Brandy/Brady Hardeson is a waitress and bartender. Ethan is her son. Chad is the new dishwasher. Jimmy is the cook. More employees include Dave, Janelle, and Marnie.

Friendship Harbor is . . .
. . . a small town in Maine. Cliff Robichaud runs through women like toilet paper. Karen Grenier is Cliff's extremely angry daughter. Frances Robichaud is Cliff's estranged wife and Karen's mother. Malcolm "Mac" Porter used to be Cliff's business partner. Michelle is one of the mean girls in town — it could explain why her Joe seems to be paying attention to Dawn Farrington. Jessica Grace is quite the femme fatale and looks after the witchy Eleanor Hall. Her wealthy daughter, Millie, is trapped with her. Becky works at the library. Hannah Quinn is a child who spent time with Sunny. Hannah's grandmother, June Martin, had been Sunny's best friend. Winston is June's cat. Billy is a friend of Hannah's. Patricia is a realtor in Friendship Harbor.

Sheriff Justin Pelletier is interested in Sophie. Officer Young fetches Sophie.

Nicole Snowden had not been a friend in seventh grade. Moe, a musician, had been a friend of Oliver's. Stu, the chicken, didn't win the Blueberry King title. Alex had been Sophie's boyfriend.

The Cover and Title
The cover is a nighttime cartoon with Jack, the white llama, smoking something and wearing sunglasses in front of the brightly lit pub door. A mint-green sign advertising "Cold Beer" is on his left. Above his head is a Hollywood-style sign with round yellow lights against a red frame with the title in a gradated orange-yellow-orange against a black background. At the bottom are the authors' names in white.

The title is what Sophie faces, a Murder Drama with Your Llama.

I really liked characters and they were nicely fleshed out - and that was awesome thinking about the genre. I loved the setting too: small towns with pecualiar characters are always adorable.

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did! I just loved this lovely small town and would have loved to read more about life there. And the book left more questions than answered to! I am still so curious about Sophie's grandmother's past. I also loved how this had a perfect hint of romance without having it completely yet.

It’s cute and funny, à la Janet evanovich. Zero romance but there is a little bit of flirting. I really enjoyed the author’s dry humor.

Laama best. Muuten tuli vähän fiilis, että teos on kirjoitettu kännissä ja läpällä, enkä oikein osannut nauttia näin hömpästä hömpän asteesta.

Sophie learns of the passing of her grandmother and that she has left her home and pub to her. Needing to get away from California and her failing career she jumps at the chance to start over in Friendship Harbor, Maine. This is the new start that she needs and she can't wait to become a part of the town. Her fresh start is turned upside down on her first day, not only does she become owner to a llama named Jack but said llama is later accused of murder. It doesn't help that the manager of her pub doesn't seem to care for her much and some people seem to have had issues with her grandmother. Sophie doesn't believe Jack is guilty and decides to investigate, she played an amateur detective tv so how hard could real life be. Her friend Oliver is there to help her settle in so she looks to him to help her with figuring out who the killer might be. Follow along as Sophie clumsily investigates and at.The same time gets to know people around d town. This was such a fun a funny new read, I didn't put it down until I was finished. It made me laugh the whole way through and want a llama all my own!

I was searching for some cozy crime story and, well, this certainly was that. (The title was funny and that’s the reason why I picked this book.) The characters were a bit too one-dimensional and it was too easy to guess who the murderer is, but otherwise this was an OK little story. Easy, nice and quick to read.

Laamasta 101 pistettä. Ensiluokkaista laamakuvausta.

Tiesin, että tämä on kevyt, mutta en osannut aavistaa, että voisin pitää jotain tällaista jopa LIIAN kevyenä. Äänikirjana ihan mainio.

This was a fun read! I crew really fond of all the little characters, and the whole scene. This was a great way to kickstart the new year, but I must say that detective books like these still make me feel some sort of second hand embarrassment for some reason. It just always feels a bit of when a complitely random person tries to play the towns detective, but besides that the book was absolutely worth a read.

I loved this book first in a new series!! Former actress Sophie LaFleur inherits her grandmother’s mansion and pub in Main she gets more than she bargained for. She also gets a sexy yet brooding pub manager and a llama 🦙.
When some how her llama is involved in a crazy mysterious death of the town play boy Sophie decides to take the investigation in her own hands because well she did play the star role in a tv drama as a detective.
Sophie decided she didn’t want the drama to follow her to this small town and her new life. In this hilarious story she does some sleuthing of her own to prove her llamas innocence. She is really stating to love this small town pub life and wants to keep her llama innocent and stay in the towns good graces. This was a cute story I loved it and the fact that two amazing authors wrote it. I can’t wait for the next mystery from this dynamic duo. They wrote so well together you can’t tell it’s two separate people. I love the setting the characters and the story line. I wish the book was longer but that’s all. There is a lot more that needs to be said but I’m sure that’s for the next stories!!

I’ve read a variety of Erin McCarthy books, but this was my first by Kathy Love. It was definitely a mystery rather than a romance and as a result was not as steamy as most of Erin’s books that I have read. So if you like a more innocent story, this one would fit the bill. It has the laugh out loud crazy plot twists and silly situations I’ve enjoyed in some of Erin’s other books, and I see the potential for this series to continue on with a lot of potential among the loony cast of characters and a heroine who marches to the beat of her own drum. Just imagine a story starting off with a Californian unemployed actress who has just inherited a house and a pub from her grandmother. She has never met her grandmother, and travel east with her best gay friend/child star to see whether this is a chance for a fresh start. She also discovers that she has inherited a Llama who is accused of murder within a few hours of her arrival. In her desire to exonerate herself and her Llama she takes on her alter ego from her cancelled television series, an amateur sleuth. I found it to be an easy read and enjoyed laughing my way through. I suggest you Give it a try.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Murder Drama With Your Llama is rather self-aware cozy mystery. The New England setting sets it apart from the typically southern-based whodunit and the cast of sassy characters seem all to aware of the roles they play. It is like SCREAM meets the cozy genre.

Despite the awareness, it is also true to form. It is a breezy read that is fun and engaging. One can almost smell the seaside salty air in idyllic Friendship Harbor, complete with blueberry festivals and creaking boardwalks. All that missing is references to saltwater taffy and foaming waves crashing on the rocky shores.

At one point, the sheriff of the town mentions that for all its quirky characters, the most interesting crime the town has seen in years was a streaker at a woman's softball game, completely unaware that a storm named Sophie has arrived and is bringing with her a never-ending rain of death, just like Jessica Fletcher in Murder She Wrote.

If you like charming cozies and also enjoy seeing them lampooned in a genuine love letter to the form, this is the book for you.

I bought my first Erin McCarthy book on my 16th birthday (just over 16 years ago). She never fails to deliver entertainment. I enjoy her books now as much as I did then. I had fun reading this book. Was the concept silly? Absolutely! But it was sooo much fun. Can't wait to read the sequels.

I really enjoyed this book. It starts fairly typically for a cozy mystery. Sophie is a successful actress, starring in her own show, Murder, She Texted, or she was - the show was canceled and now she's unemployed. However, she inherits a bar and a house from her grandmother and decides to try something different so she moves to Maine. She quickly discovers she's also inherited her grandmother's pet llama - Jack Kerouac. Sophie's friend Oliver has also come with her to help her settle in with her new life, though he plans on going back to Los Angeles after a few weeks.
The next morning, Sophie quickly learns, Cliff, the man who showed her around her grandmother's property, has died. And her llama is accused of causing his accident. Sophie knows her llama is innocent so she sets out to solve the crime, using her knowledge of playing a fictional detective to guide her.
Sophie does a lot of eavesdropping, asks some questions, dates the sheriff (which goes no where, much to his chagrin), and investigates the crime scene, where she finds a vital clue though she doesn't realize right away.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It's humorous. The characters are great. And I love that Sophie and Oliver have a platonic friendship. Oliver is gay - so there's no romance here, just good friends. It makes for a refreshing change. Sophie is a great lead character too - she's not too perfect, but she's not "dumb for plot purposes" either. She comes off as a novice detective, which she should.
Finally, at the end of the book, almost by accident, Sophie gets the final piece of the puzzle she needs to put everything together. To her credit she finds the person she thinks did it in her bar, and she starts asking questions, with the sheriff, her bar manager, Oliver, and a roomful of people there. She ends up proving what the murderer did and how and the sheriff leads the woman out in cuffs. The only issue is technically Sophie and Oliver removed evidence from a crime scene, but then on the other hand the sheriff department missed it and presumably they'd be able to use it at trial, though chain of custody is sketchy.
Again, excellent book, I loved it. And it's so much fun to say the title. I received this book for free by searching Amazon for free cozies. Or from one of the free ebook services I subscribe to for free. But I've bought the next two in the series. Highly recommended.

Murder Drama With Your Llama by Erin McCarthy and Kathy Love, book one in their Friendship Harbor Mysteries series is a humorous and wonderful story. Sophie is an out-of-work actress who is in need of a scene change. When she discovers she’s inherited her Grammy’s house and pub in the small, quaint town of Friendship Harbor, Maine she is on the next flight out. What she didn’t expect was her Grammy’s trouble causing llama, named Jack Kerouac or the sexy, laid back, pub manager, Dean, who lives in her guesthouse. Dean is a mystery to Sophie but he is often right there to keep Sophie from falling on her a**. When a well “loved”, elderly man is found dead with Jack Kerouac standing nearby, the llama is suspected of the death; kicked to death. Sophie once solved mysteries on a TV show, and uses that experience to learn more about the victim, who wasn’t as well loved as she first thought, and clear her inherited ornery llama. While investigating, Sophie is introduced to many of the town residents, puts herself in danger, and finds a new home.

Ms. McCarthy and Ms. Love wrote a wonderful, story that was riveting and kept my attention to the very end. They provided a mystery that kept me on my toes and wrongly guessing who the killer was. I highly recommend Murder Drama With Your Llama to other reader and look forward to the next book in this series.

What do you get when you have an ex-actress, a llama, and a dead body?? A brand new book from Erin McCarthy and Kathy Love that's what!! For those of you –like me– who loved The Fangover and have been waiting patiently (well perhaps not that patiently) for their next collaboration . . . wait no longer . . . it's here!

Murder Drama With Your Llama is the first book in their brand new Friendship Harbor Mysteries series. It's an amusing fast-paced mystery you won't be able to put down; though I should really say mysteries. After all, besides a dead guy that –depending on who you ask– may or may not be voted the town's most charming lech and a possibly guilty llama that may or may not be an escape artist, Sophie LaFleur, an ex-actress, who has just moved to town after inheriting her grandmother's house and pub, has to figure out what the town has against her grandmother and her pub manager has against her. And considering she's only been in town a few hours, just imagine what'll happen after she's had a good night's sleep . . .

Murder Drama With Your Llama is the first book in the Friendship Harbor Mysteries Series co-written by Erin McCarthy and Kathy Love. I absolutely loved this book. It was such a fun and unique story that takes place in the small town of Friendship Harbor, Maine and it involves an ex-actress, Pub Manager, and a Llama who may have caused a little too much drama. ;)

Just when she is looking for a change of pace/scenery, ex-actress Sophie LaFleur inherits her grandmother's house/mansion in Friendship Harbor, Maine, but along with the house comes a sexy, laid-back Pub Manager and a drama who may be a main suspect in a crime. Sophie, who wasn't welcomed to Friendship Harbor, Maine with opened arms sets on a journey to set clear her now llama and solve the mystery she is now involved in once and for all.

I have become an instant fan of Erin McCarthy. This is the first book I read that is written by Kathy Love. This amazing duo brought us such a fun, mystery with unique characters who are brought together and all play a role in solving this small town mystery. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A very interesting book. Keeps you thinking. I look forward to reading more in this series.
There is one thing though, and it is the reason I only gave it 4 stars as opposed to 5. When the subject of motives for Cliff's murder is being discussed, it is mentioned that he was going to divorce his present wife and remarry, thereby cutting her off from inheriting and his new wife would inherit. As it is stated that his present wife is named in his will that would preclude his new wife from inheriting. He can divorce and remarry many times over, but until he draws up a new will which removes his present wife she will remain his heir PERIOD.
I find it most annoying when authors do not do sufficient research when writing a book and then wind up giving their readers false information that they might someday rely on. When writing a book, the onus is on the author to do due diligence in quoting the law.

I am on an Erin McCarthy binge-read after just finishing her Murder By Design series and was so excited to start this series as it stars a llama.

I was not disappointed one bit.

My toxic trait is thinking that I could befriend one and never get spit on. They're just so majestic and Jack is definitely one smart llama, even if he was accused of murdering the town manwhore.

I hope Oliver comes back to visit and that Sophie's mom pulls the stick out of her bum. Seriously, that woman is worse than Bailey's mom from Murder by Design and that's really saying something.

Llama drama

An out-of-work actor inherits a pub in Maine, and a llama. Sophie is looking forward to finding out more about the grandmother she barely remembers. Less than three hours after she arrives, the man who showed her around the property is found dead. Her llama is found beside him and is blamed for the accidental killing. Sophie doesn't see it that way and takes on the task of clearing the good name of her pet.

Along the way, we meet the residents of the small town and get to know some of their quirks. Not the least of which is the hottie who is the manager of her pub. But, why doesn't he like her and why won't he teach her about running the pub?

Looking forward to getting to know the people of Friendship, Maine better.

In MURDER DRAMA WITH YOUR LLAMA, Sophie inherits her grandmother’s house in Maine and decides to move their after her acting career in LA stalls out. She also inherits a bar she doesn’t quite know how to run and an adorable llama. I loved the llama, btw. Unfortunately, right after moving in, someone dies and her llama is blamed for the death (hence the title.) I thought the premise of this cozy mystery was cute and I picked this mystery up because I LOVE llamas and was excited to read a book with llamas in it. I did enjoy the scenes with Jack. I felt the characters were a bit flat. I wished I felt more of a connection with any of them and kept wanting to know more what Sophie was feeling. I read four other cozy mystery series set in Maine so I am a big fan of a New England settings for cozies and that was another reason this series appealed, but in this book, other than mentioning lobster rolls and fried clams served at the bar, there really was nothing done to establish setting and make me feel like I was reading a book set in Maine. This wasn't a bad mystery, and if you really like llamas (the llama writing was cute), perhaps it will be the right one for you. 3.5/5 stars.

Sophie's an actress that inherits a house, pub and llama from a grandmother she really never knew. Because she's out of a job and looking for a life reset she leaves CA for Maine to start over. Her acting friend Oliver goes along with her to check things out. She no sooner arrives than there's a murder that seems to involve her llama. She's positive the animal didn't do it and sets out to clear his name. We go from one dead person to two and which causes Sophie to be even more determined to solve the murder mystery. A cute quick read. I received an ARC through Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my review.

What a wonderful cozy mystery Murder Drama with your Llama was! I can't keep the smile off my face from reading this book. Sophie has moved to Friendship Harbor Maine to see the house that she inherited from her late grandmother Sunny. It is one of those quaint coastal towns loaded with charm and unique characters. She and her friend Oliver stumble into a murder mystery that one of the locals tries to blame on her llama! This was a fun, adorable, sweet, G rated mystery that was big on laughs and low on angst. It is the perfect book to read on a rainy afternoon. It was told from Sophie's single POV and if you are a fan of Hallmark mysteries this is the perfect story for you.

When your llama is accused of going on a murderous rampage, what do you do? If you're unemployed actor Sophie Lafleur, you jump at the chance to emulate your on-screen character and do a little sleuthing.

Murder Drama With Your Llama is exactly what it sounds like: a fun little cosy with amateur detectives and a fuzzy llama who causes a divide in town opinion. This story is of the "starting over" variety as Sophie has just inherited a new home and a business from her grandmother. Added to the mix is a love interest or two to help spice things up.

Recommended as a nice time-filler.
