Such a great idea for this plot - the heroine breaks into a wealthy Southern manor to steal a priceless work of art that's a family heirloom to her. But she gets caught by the new owner, a handsome stranger.

She tries to escape, falls and hits her head, then in a stroke of inspiration, claims that it gave her amnesia and she can't for the life of her remember why she was breaking and entering his house. Imagine her shock when the owner responds, "That's okay honey, I know you don't remember this, but you're actually my wife!"

Turns out he wants to use her for his own nefarious plans, and so he's concocted this marriage story to keep her close. And she can't contradict him without admitting to grand larceny LMAO

The heroine was definitely a special snowflake though. Everyone was just instantly enamored with her and how she's so different from those boring traditional Southern girls! And the author NEVER SHUTS UP about her "copper curls" ffs.

the mystery was entertaining but in the end, kind of convoluted.

So, a decent romantic suspense read but it could have been better.

When I read a romance, and it gives me the classic romantic comedy vibe (circa 1930s-1960s), that's a high compliment. I love the mix of laugh out loud humor and passion that a very good contemporary romance delivers. And Tongue in Chic definitely delivered.

I am no stranger to Christina Dodd. She is one of my favorite authors. Yet, I am gun shy about contemporaries (other than the series romances). They just don't hold my interest like a good paranormal or historical romance. But, I bought this book because I buy all of Christina Dodd's books. And I liked the plot. Natalie Meadow Szarvas sneaks into the house of her estranged grandfather to steal a painting that her grandmother left behind when her grandfather kicked her out after she admitted to an affair with her painting instructor. Many years later, Meadow goes into the house to find that it belongs to real estate magnate with the reputation of a shark, Devlin Fitzwilliam, who has converted it to a hotel called The Secret Garden. She ends up hitting her head and waking up to a gorgeous, but scary-looking man standing over him. She does the first thing that comes to mind, pretends amnesia. Devlin is nothing if not an opportunist. He seizes the chance to get revenge against his nemesis, the grandfather of the woman who has broken into his house. And if pretending like he's married to her can deliver that, he's all for it. And there's also the fact, that's he's very attracted to Meadow.

This book had the recipe for a good read, and in Christina Dodd's capable hands, it was a delicious confection of laugh-out loud humor, and sexy romance, with the addition of a dash of suspense and emotional angst. Ms. Dodd's prose is not weighty, but concise, yet descriptive in a pleasing matter that sets a great scene for the reader.

Ms. Dodd writes wonderful heroes, masculine, sexy, determined, possessive, and compelling. And Devlin is no different. He's got a reputation for being a dangerous man to cross. But I loved that Meadow had a way of getting to the soft heart of him, helping to heal the broken places inside of him, and encouraging him to do the right thing, and be okay with it. And to take risks, that this thoughtful man wouldn't have taken, were it not for love. In reality, Devlin is a good guy. He's just a tiger who can purr in one moment and strike with deadly force in another. I love how he came to realize that winning was nothing, if he didn't have Meadow in his life. He has to overcome some demons from his past related to his illegitimacy, and Meadow helps him to do exactly that, in more ways than one.

Meadow is one of those heroines who's free-spirited and artistic. But she's not annoying or over the top with it. I found her very endearing. I liked that she wanted to see the best in Devlin, although she could also see his ruthless streak. She has an agenda that one can get behind, but I like that she hasn't lost grip on what is right or wrong in her goal to steal back her grandmother's painting. She falls hard and fast for Devlin, and like a person who is at ease with her emotions, she lets her body go where her heart leads. But it never comes off as tawdry.

Tongue in Chic is populated with interesting and entertaining secondary characters. I loved the Southern vibrancy of this book. It takes place in Charleston, and the charm is very evident in the small town personalities, and their distinctly Southern behavior and ways. The antics of the old codgers that formed Meadow's grandfather's circle, Four, Devlin's ne'er-do-well childhood friend and son of his nemesis, and Devlin's employees and the inhabitants of the town added delightful texture to this book.

The sexual tension, attraction, and most importantly, the love connection between Meadow and Devlin was lovely. I loved the scenes in which they were acting like a married couple. It felt very natural, despite the fact that they had never met each other before Meadow breaks into the hotel. I could see how the other characters had no trouble accepting that they were a married couple, despite the shaky cover story they gave about meeting in Majorca, but having a fight and becoming estranged. This is one of those books where the tension builds satisfactorily, making you eager to read the scene where their attraction culminates into lovemaking. The love scenes were well done, and sexy, but far from vulgar or smutty. They were very enjoyable to read.

This book was just what I needed. It was a lighter read, but meaty enough to have an impact on me, since I don't tend to go for fluffy books. This story has encouraged me to read more contemporaries, but I know that I will look for those that give me the same satisfaction that Tongue in Chic delivered. Hopefully, I will find some that I enjoy as much as I did this book. If you're looking for a fun, fast-paced, but rich contemporary romance, I say give Tongue in Chic a try.

She says she has amnesia.
He knows she’s lying. She knows he knows she’s lying.
He feeds her further lies, daring her to play along or accept that she’s lying.
She refuses to back down.

This can work only so far.
But these two carry on the charade till it stops being funny or fresh - even to the two of them. And still they carry it on - in the juvenile tradition of who can hold the breath longer!

The setting is interesting - Charleston with some hoity southern gentry fighting it out with the upstart H. And the house -Waldemar /Secret Garden is kinda whimsical and that name does nudge wink to the H's cold materialism.
So yes, it’s good - hot and sexy, sweet and tender with sharp, silly and hilarious banter going back and forth.

She grinned and ran back to him. "Did you come out to play, too?"
"Come out to play?" He hadn't heard that term since third grade.
“Did you hit your head again?" he asked warily.
"It's the full moon. Come on!" She grabbed his hand. "Let dance!"
She pulled him along, holding his arm in the air, stomping her feet in some weird version of Greek dancing. "Isn't this fun?" she called.
He felt stupid, like an onlooker at a drunken party. Plus, security was watching.

Suspense is half baked - you can soon work out the bad guys from the good ones. The author certainly helps there.

*Spoilers ahead* The homework on that past intrigue is, ummm half baked again.
Swish, swirl and you plot the hiding a lost masterpiece (of no small significance) in plain sight - for decades? And this is your emergency fund? And your yet to be born daughter or even her daughter will one day walk in with a silver key and cash in. Is it even yours in the first place?
What are the chances that things will go as per plan?

AND the H recognises the h as being the granddaughter of the said lady? Just like that! I scratched my head all through the book wondering how he managed to lock in on her DNA and that was the way he did it!

All things were explained but one. Why did the person who pushed her down the stairs did so? She hadn’t recognised the person and the person needed her (that was the plan, remember) and so why? Well, never mind!

Natalie Meadow Szarvas has just been caught breaking and entering in what she thought was her grandfather's South Carolina estate to look for a painting that she feels in rightfully hers. Instead she runs into the new owner, Devlin Fitzwilliam and he's demanding to know who she is and what she is doing. Thinking fast, she tells him she has amnesia and doesn't know why she's in his living room. Thinking even quicker, Devlin counters with the fact that she's his long lost wife and he's so happy she's finally come home. Poor Meadow is horrified. She can't tell him the truth, he'll throw her in jail and if she stays, she knows she's never going to want to leave. Especially with Devlin constantly trying to jar her memory with descriptions of their first meeting in Majorca, in exquisite detail. They play a sort of cat and mouse game, each refusing to tell the other their ulterior motives, while both falling hard in love. Meadow has her reasons for trying to find the painting and Devlin has his reasons for flaunting her about town as his wife. Amidst all the games, is a person who is becoming increasingly aggressive in his or her attempts to get to that painting. When that determination hurts Meadow, Devlin realizes he no longer cares about finding out her secrets but only ensuring her safety. Forced to play the dutiful wife, she continues searching for the painting never knowing that what she's looking for is worth killing for and that someone is determined to possess it.

Meadow was one of the funnest character's I've read about in a long time. Her natural charm and effervescence brings everyone to their knees, including her stern grandfather and his cronies, her stuffy mother in law and all the employees around the estate that Devlin is turning into a five star hotel. She's not all sweetness though. She may come across as flaky and flighty due to her tempermental artistic nature but she doesn't let Devlin or anyone else walk all over her. She stands up to her grandfather's autocratic ways and gets her mother in law to loosen up and acknowledge what's missing in her life. She teases Devlin and gets him to rethink his own cold, domineering ways. Devlin has had a pretty rotten childhood and it's shaped him into the man he is today but with Meadow by his side, he hopes to change that. He just needs to convince her to stay.

There are some cons in this story. It's implausible to say the least and it's corny. The character development of Meadow was at first, inconsistent. When she became a wild bohemian, chasing after the moonlight, call me crazy but I didn't see it coming. But once I did, I loved it. There are a lot of people running around this book, too. I couldn't keep the cronies straight and I frankly forgot about Meadow's parents and the head security guy. But all in all I loved this book.

Christina Dodd's Tongue in Chic is exactly that. Tongue in cheek. It's a fun romp through the stuffy, hallowed halls of South Carolina and has some of the funnest, most eclectic group of characters I've read about in a long time. It was a fun entertaining read and right after I finished it, I wanted to read it again! I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read some more of her Fortune Hunters series.

The first half was great. I was giggling while reading it and my poor husband was trying to sleep. When he asked me what the story was and I told him he looked me as if I was crazy to read such things:) Yes, it's improbable, unbelievable but so much fun!

The heroine enters a house to steal a painting, hits her head while caught in the act and feigns amnesia to escape charges. Hero on the other hand, seizes the chance -for his own nefarious reasons- to tell her that she's his wife. After all, she doesn't remember anything, right? So how can she confront his lie? And as husband and wife they do have to sleep in the same bed of course. Besides he told her the most romantic story of how they met and married in Majorka, she's already starting to fall for him :)

However, after the first 200 pages, the story lost each appeal to me. The heroine suddenly becomes a 100% bohemian, going to dance naked in the garden in the moonlight, just for the joy of it. And of course the hero sees her and is drooling after her naked body. Besides, all men who see her fall in love with her, whether they're 20 or 70 years old. She's the most beautiful, vivacious, clever and of course good hearted woman anyone met, becomes friends with everyone, and there is not a man or woman who doesn't think the Pope should make her a saint as soon as possible. At that part, the plot became nauseatious and ridiculous. This saintly woman, kept telling lies to the man she loves despite him giving her every chance to come with the truth and her belief that he's a good man. She also attacks him verbally and decides to leave him when he freaks out the moment he finds out she's pregnant: they only know each other for 3 weeks and she thinks his first reaction should be immense joy at God's gift. He, who got ridiculed by every man in town for being born out of wedlock. She, who's still telling him lies about who she really is, demands he grovels to win back her love.

If not for the awesome beginning, this would be a 2 star read. But the first half was amazingly funny, witty and sweet. I just wish the writer could add a flow or two on that exquisite, ethereal heroine. This whole raving about her, got tiring after a while.

The average citizen would call the police when finding out a possible thief in their home. But Devlin Fitzwilliam decided to do otherwise. She wants to pretend she's got amnesia, well, if it's how she want to play the game, the rich man is gonna pretend to be her husband. It's the perfect opportunity to discover what she's really up to.

Meadow Szarvas didn't know that her estrange grandfather sold the mansion. She still know that what she was trying to do might be considered a theft, even if her grandmother's lost painting is supposed to be her's and she knows that no matter what he say, she's not married to this man she never saw before in her life. But when someone's life is at stakes, there's no other choice for a girl than to be a little reckless. But falling for a fake husband is no part of the plan.

I'm still not sure how to rate this book. While I liked it and really enjoyed the idea of the pretend amnesia vs. pretend marriage and that it created funny moments and cute ones (like when Devlin describe/think up the fake way they met with vivid imagination), I never really formed attachments with the characters. I was told the hero is a cold and stern man who change on contact with Meadow and I read it but didn't felt it. Is it because this romance is more old-school and I'm too used to modern ones, I wonder.

At it's core this is an entertaining romance novel. I enjoyed the characters and it made me laugh out loud. The plot is a little outlandish but it is a romance novel and it is supposed to be fantasy. Our very likable heroine, Meadow, breaks into Devlin Fitzwilliam's estate to steal a painting of her grandmothers that is rightfully hers. In the course of the B & E she is caught and hits her head quite hard so she claims amnesia. Not to be outdone in crazy stories Devlin claims that she is his wife. Now the question is who is going to come clean first. There is great chemistry between Devlin and Meadow, and again it is a romance novel so you know where that is going. There is also suspense in the search for the painting, because Meadow is not the only one looking. I didn't figure out who the villian was before it was revealed since there were plenty of suspects floating in and out. This novel also makes me want to read "The Secret Garden."

I don't usually read contemporary romances other than Jennifer Cruise and Jayne Ann Krentz books. When I saw Tongue In Chic at the Friends of the Library sale, I decided to give it a chance merely because Christina Dodd was the author. I've always enjoyed her historical romances, so I was curious as to what she would deliver in the contemporary realm. As I expected, Dodd wrote another fun read with memorable characters engaged in funny and romantic situations.

When reading the book, I didn't know it was part of a larger series. It wasn't until I started writing this review that I discovered that Tongue In Chic is the second book in the Fortune Hunters series. Since Dodd is tying these books together, I'm surprised that she skimped on some of the supporting character details. Seeing that I have not read the others, I can only presume that money, or fortune hunters, is the only detail that ties them together. However, there was a cameo appearance in this book by the main characters from Trouble in High Heels, Brandi Michaels and Roberto Bartolini, which was a nice touch. I wondered who they were, and now I know!

The hero of our story, Devlin Fitzwilliam, is your typical romantic interest: devilishly handsome, strong, intelligent, and arrogantly stubborn. At first, his possessive attitude and seemingly cold personality make him an unlikeable person. However, as his history is revealed, the reader gains an understanding and sympathetic attitude despite his guarded demeanor.

Next, bring in Natalie Meadow Szarvas, called Meadow throughout the entire book. She was atypical when compared to most romance heroines I am familiar with. Meadow reminded me of a hippie or a modern bohemian woman, qualities best portrayed in the garden scene. She is free-spirited, uninhibited, and extremely loving, all a result of her unusual upbringing. Of course, the heroine is the exact opposite of Devlin, who had an unhappy childhood and tough adult experiences. The only other quality I wanted Meadow to have was strength. She was independent and stubborn, just like Devlin. However, she kept getting hit on the head throughout the book. Devlin was reduced to coddling her at numerous points in the book, which I don't find romantic, especially when its redundant.

The interactions between the two characters is what makes the book exciting. From the very first moment they meet, it feels like love at first sight. The desire and passion is there, which is always a must for romance novels. What really makes the book endearing is the way the characters grow because of their friendships with each other.

The supporting characters were engaging and interesting as well. I especially liked Four, Bradley Benjamin the fourth. I found his unique relationship with Devlin believable despite the animosity between their families. Even Four's father, who you can't initially stand, turns out to have redeemable qualities. This is a romance, after all. The reader picks up the book hoping that most if not all the characters will have their own happy endings.

Everything can't be all happy-go-lucky, even in a romance novel, though. Dodd not only develops the conflicts between the protagonists of the book, Meadow and Devlin, but also brings in outside villains. The mystery behind them is revealed early on or easily guessed as the story unfolds. This doesn't bother me as a reader, though, because I didn't pick up Tongue In Chic expecting a great mystery. I chose Christina Dodd's book for the romance, and she delivered that along with humorous situations (and who couldn't use laughter in life?).

My main negative critique about the book is that Dodd didn't develop the back stories of the people enough, especially the supporting characters. She only hit the tip of the iceberg. She gave readers the bare minimum information and then left us hanging onto the edge of our seats craving even more. This was unfortunate because all of these characters were as important to the overall romance as the main protagonists. Perhaps she didn't want their stories to overshadow Meadow and Devlin's interactions, or she was afraid that the writing would transform into a soap opera rather than a romance novel. Another reviewer even guessed that Dodd had page limitations set by her publisher. Either way, this book could have surpassed the traditional confines of the romance plot structure if Dodd had just taken the story a little further than planned.

Even without the additional development of details, this book is a fun and easy read. It's light-hearted, quirky, and will make you laugh. Best of all, it has a happy ending. There's nothing to feel guilty about when reading a romance novel, especially one by Christina Dodd. We all need happy endings once in a while.

I read it a long time ago, it says something that at least I still remember many things about the book. I can't say it is a very romantic story but its suspense part is intriguing. Its narrative is fine and at the end it is an enjoyable read.

At lunch one day with a bunch of other authors, we got to talking about amnesia books and this one was recommended to me. However, it's not your typical amnesia plot.

The heroine, Meadow, is caught breaking into a mansion her family used to live in, in search of a painting her grandmother left behind. Not only has her estranged grandfather sold the house at this point, Meadow is swiftly caught and finds herself in the clutches of the new owner, the handsome Devlin Fitzwilliam. Meadow feigns amnesia following a fortuitous fall that she sustained during the burglary, a lie designed to get her out of hot water for the moment.

Devlin doesn't buy her amnesia story, but instead of openly doubting her, he does her one better by telling her she's forgotten that she is his wife. Devlin has his own reasons for telling this lie, ones that are too complicated to explain. Suffice it to say that a very long con ensues on both of their sides, each of them keeping up the ruse over a series of months for their own purposes. But neither of them planned on falling in love.

This book was really wonderful on all fronts. Not only was the setup highly original. The characters' backstories were interesting, as were their respective reasons for playing along with the lie. The book was steady in its reveals with a surprise ending right after it seemed like all else had been revealed. This book was everything a great story should be!

Plus she had to face the fact that she couldn’t handle the power of coitus with Devlin.” p.421

Author: Christina Dodd
First published: 2007
Length: ~300 pages
Setting: Contemporary, South Carolina.
Sex: Explicit. Reasonably frequent.
Hero: Wealthy illegitimate hotel magnate.
Heroine: Hippy glass artist hiding her identity.

Book 1, Trouble in High Heels, could pretty much stand alone. Book 2, Tongue In Chic , has far stronger links to other books in the series (and to other Dodd series) giving a more colourful World but lacking a strong conclusion.

Characters from other books:
- Gabriel Prescott runs the security
- Brandi and Roberto attend the wedding
- Carrick Manly is still hunting his father’s fortune

And characters who mysteriously appear and disappear (Sam, Mr Hopkins, Four) leaving the reader wondering if they’ll pop up again somewhere. (My google-fu suggests not yet?).

So, I liked it. It was a bit ridiculous in places but some whimsy and suspense making it worth the read. I just wish it tied up ends better.

Fortune Hunters:
Book 1 Trouble in High Heels - Brandi Michaels and Roberto Bartolini
Book 2 Tongue In Chic - Devlin Fitzwilliam and Meadow Szarvas
Book 3 Thigh High - Nessa Dahl and Jeremiah MacNaught
Book 4 Danger in a Red Dress - Hannah Grey and Gabriel Prescott

with links to Lost Hearts:
Book 1 Just the Way You Are - Hope Prescott and Zack Givens
Book 2 Almost Like Being in Love - Pepper Prescott and Dan Graham
Book 3 Close to You - Kate Montgomery and Teague Ramos
Book 3.5 Gabriel's Gift (short story)

I didn't like this as much as other Christina Dodd books. I can't put my finger on why but it just didn't do it for me. I loved Meadow and Devlin individually but regardless of the lust, I couldn't feel them as a couple.

Meadow breaks into what she thinks is her grandfather's mansion to steal a painting that is rightfully hers. Unfortunately the new owner, Devlin Fitzwilliam catches her in the act. She thinks fast and claims amnesia but he thinks faster and claims she's his wife. Now Meadow knows why she lied but why did he? It bothered me that she never really tried to figure out what his angle was. Why exactly was he basically holding her hostage? What was his end game? Finding out the answer is why I continued past the halfway point and then it got exciting and I couldn't put the book down.

I particularly liked Four (great nickname by the way). His relationship (if you could call it that) with Devlin was interesting and a little bit enabling. I would be interested in hearing his story at some point.

When Isabella left her husband, she left him one of her paintings. Her granddaughter needs money for her mother's cancer treatment. She decides to use her grandmother's house key to get in to her grandfather's house and steal the painting. She is caught, falls, and knocks herself out. When she comes to, she pretends amnesia, hoping to evade criminal charges. However, the house no longer belongs to her grandfather. The house and its furnishings were bought by Devlin Fitzwilliams. He tops her amnesia plea by telling her she is his wife and can't remember this due to the amnesia. She stays to try and locate the painting and falls in love but of course the path of love is a bit bumpy.

Utterly ridiculous pap that I still thoroughly enjoyed. The plot, characters and setting are all straight from the 80s, with a domineering businessman whose angst is about being illegitimate and a hippie-raised wild child who dances nude in the moonlight because of course she does. Despite the whisper-thin justifications for the plot (there really is no reason for the faked amnesia and even faker marriage), the book still works because it's entirely aware of how silly it all is, and skates past all logic and reason with a shrug and a smile.

Meadow herself had the potential to be horrifically annoying (for fuck's sake, her name's Meadow) but there are enough more sour characters in the cast to balance her out. I particularly liked the unimpressed secretary Sam , Meadow's domineering grandfather and the dissolute, useless aristocratic Four. They're all stock character types, but the writing has enough charm that the whole book is still entertaining.

Now this book was MUCH better than I expected. The heroine finds herself in a real sticky situation when she tries to steal from a wealthy Southerner who catches her in the act. She claims she has amnesia and instead of sending her to prison, he proclaims she’s his wife. And she can’t deny it without confessing to grand larceny. F*cking HILARIOUS because now she has a ‘husband’ she can’t stand and the reason she’s there is nowhere to be found.

I thought this would be a typical boy meets girl romance novel but when I say I was so so wrong in all the best ways. And everything I thought was going to happen, didn’t and I really got to the point where I couldn’t put it down. I can totally see this being turned into a movie. Like a low budget independent film that you randomly turn on and are really happy that you did.

When Meadow Szarvas breaks into Devlin Fitzwilliams's mansion to steal a painting, she is caught by Devlin himself. When she claims to have amnesia, he tells her that she is his wife. As Devlin fills in the details of their courtship, she becomes enthralled by his tale even as she continues her search for the painting. There are complications with their families and the mansion that Devlin is renovating into a boutique hotel and their are other forces working that are dangerous to them both. This was a story with some twist and turns leading to a Happily Ever After.

Tongue in Chic

Devlin, one of Nathan Manly's 5 sons is a wealthy developer who has purchased the mansion of one of the elite and has turned it into a hotel. Less than a month before opening there is a break in and the their is Meadow looking for a painting her grandmother told her about. Lots of intrigue and several people trying to find this same painting concludes with Meadow and her mother, Sharon being united with Sharon's father and Devlin and Meadow marrying and having a daughter.

Started out corny... got cornier with the author trying to make it funny.... then the story got more interesting.... then it got a bit cheesy towards the end.... but it was a good story. Just not something I would re-read. I wasn't a huge fan of the story. When it starts out with the characters being corny it kind of throws a wrench in it for me. I like emotional build ups in my romantic suspense books, and this didn't have it at all; but it did have suspense in it in other ways.

As always, Ms. Dodd does not disappoint. I know when I pick up one of her books. Nothing else matters. I love the humor, thrill, romance and suspense that Christina always delivers. And this addition to the Fortune Hunter series is worth every minute my house didn't get cleaned.
