Sixteen year old Avery is in trouble, yet again, but this time he’s in over his head. On the run, Avery is faced with hardships and fear. He must become what he’s always hated, just to survive. He discovers new reasons to hate, until fate brings him to Graymoor Mansion and he discovers a disturbing connection to the past. Through the eyes of a boy, murdered more than a century before, Avery discovers that all is not as he thought. Avery is soon forced to face the greatest challenge of all; looking into his own heart. Sean is head over heels in love with his new boyfriend, Nick. There is trouble in paradise, however. Could a boy so beautiful really love plain, ordinary Sean? Sean cannot believe it and desperately tries to transform himself into the ideal young hunk, only to learn that it’s what’s inside that matters. Keeper of Secrets is the story of two boys, one a gay youth, the other an adolescent gay basher. Fate and the pages of a hundred year old journal bring them together and their lives are forever changed.

Interesting story alternating POV between Sean and Avery. Avery is Sean's cousin and due to the death of his parents, Avery is taken in by Sean's parents. Avery has to come to terms with his prejudices and learns to be very caring and understanding compared to the bully he started out as.

When sixteen year old homophobic bully Avery's latest victim stops breathing following a pummeling, Avery realizes that he may have gone too far and killed his victim! Panicking he flees his hometown only to fall prey to exactly the types of people he most fears. Then through a trick of fate he finds himself staying with his cousin's family in a great old haunted house that holds it's own secrets of a homophobic crime long past. Can Avery learn fast enough from history or is he doomed to repeat it?

This is a quick paced story of one angry young man's fall and redemption. That redemption comes at the help of a couple of long dead boys that might well have been his victims. The story is compelling and the message important, if a bit heavy handed in spots. The story has a unique voice and there are plot twists that make this consistently interesting and a worthwhile read.

Part of the 90's generation Gay Youth Chronicles, it furthers the story of the Graymoor Manor's history with a tale of a contemporary young man coming to grips with his illusions and confusions. Unusual in the GYC series in having a straight protagonist, the new point of view makes total sense.

So different from the other books in the series but wonderfully done! And there was a mention, more than once, of my fave characters Brenden & Casper!

Captivating read. I enjoyed this book a great deal. The weaving of this story is intricate in its simplicity. Having not read the book that comes before - YET - I am happy that this book stand entirely on its own. One thing I can say about reading his books is that Roeder has a knack for introducing a character, situation, or theme briefly that make you want to keep reading more of his books to discover it. I have to say that, I know there is a suggested reading order of his books, but I think I am more satisfied reading them randomly. That way the excitement and anticipation remains sharp and beckoning.
KEEPER OF SECRETS is a great read (apparently, because I read it in a day) with a powerful set of messages.
