Osprey Fortress #37

D-Day Fortifications in Normandy

Rate this book
German defenses along the Normandy beaches were part of the larger Atlantic Wall fortifications designed to defend Fortress Europe. When Field Marshal Erwin Rommel took command of the invasion front in late 1943, he began a program to enhance fortifications along the Normandy coast as he believed that any Allied assault had to be stopped on the invasion beaches themselves. His most important contribution to the defenses was an extensive program of improvised beach obstructions to complicate any landing attempt. This book analyses these fortifications and describes how the Allied forces overcame them on the morning of June 6, 1944.

Another one of Steven Zaloga's excellent series of books dealing with a specific topic of World War 2 history. D-Day Fortifications in Normandy gives a detailed overview and analysis of the German defences along the Normandy coast, and how the invading Allied forces overcame them on the morning of D-Day.

The book features an extensive collection of original black and white photographs, current colour photographs, colour maps clearly showing the location of the fortifications, and cross-section maps of various types of fortifications. For anyone interested in the D-Day landings, this is an essential reference source.
