An excellent resource for children that explains the myth of the kraken, the history of the myth, and the actual science that might account for the existence of these tales. This book is clear, concise, well-sourced, and a lot of fun! Resources for further reading, a glossary, and even a listing of modern references to krakens make this book all the more useful. And of course, the many illustrations and photographs simply add to the joy.

This nonfiction book is a good way to introduce children to the myth of the kraken as it evolved through the centuries. With pictures and illustrations, the various depictions of the legendary kraken is finally pictured for what it is: a giant squid. The author traces its history with facts that kids can easily understand. She lists places in literature and movies in which krakens are mentioned or featured. Also included is a glossary as well as a bibliography and websites for further information. This is a great book with which to spark a kid’s interest in the underwater world.
