Jolene and Dominic are a married power couple in politics. Dominic is the governor of North Carolina.

Things start to take a weird turn when Dominic starts receiving threatening messages. The messages leading Dominic to believe someone knows about his past. Something or someone could make his whole world come crashing down. What did the governor do? Does Jolene even know about the secrets he keeps?

Boy, this one was a wild ride for sure! Secrets, lies and murder. Who is telling the truth? I just love a juicy domestic storyline! This was my first Shanora Williams read and it will definitely not be my last! Thanks so much to my favorite publisher @kensingtonbooks, @ShanoraWilliams and @netgalley for the opportunity!

From the very first chapter, this story grabbed my attention and I was hooked! Every time I thought I had it figured out here comes another twist. I enjoyed every second of this book!! I enjoyed how the story was told from multiple POVs. The past timeline adds depth to the story and helps build suspense which kept me on the edge of my seat!! I just love thrillers written by black authors and about black characters! This one is definitely one of my favorites from this year and I highly recommend!

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the advanced copy 🩷

Two stars for trying, but maybe I'm being generous.

The positive - There was a very nice note from Shanora before the book actually started giving readers a heads up regarding the books content. The prologue was the best part of the whole book.

The negative - It's one of those books where almost every character has 'secrets', and they are not the wonderful people they initially appear to be. Thus, they turn out to be bad/evil people after all. Every 'mysterious' thing that happens in the story is so easy to figure out that it beyond ridiculous. Who is leaving threatening notes for Dominic, why is he having hallucinations, what really happened to this one or that one??? It's all so stupid.

This is one of those books that if you desired to you could start it after lunch and finish it before dinner. A very simple book, you have little use for your brain while reading it.

Thanks to Penguin Random House/Kensington Books for the Advanced Readers Edition of the book.

So. Much. Scandal.

This one is full of surprises. Every single character seems to have a secret here.

Definitely a popcorn read and our characters – especially one – are of the train wreck variety.

While I did think the plot ended up unnecessarily complex, I also realize that I just wanted to end one particular character with extreme prejudice and found myself a tiny bit irritated at the…um…extremely complicated way of dealing with them.

I found that I liked Jo immensely, though she’s definitely got her own issues, and was full on rooting for her and some of the other women in this book.

A good read!

Thank you to Goodreads and Kensington books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. This was the first book of this author for me. Not my usual genre, but I must say, I am a fan of Shanora Williams.
I truly appreciated the character development, style of the book-writing from each of the main character’s perspectives, and the completely unexpected ending! What a twister of a story. I would love to have seen the r*pe actually prosecuted, but what was authored is, unfortunately, the reality of how men’s r*pe and assault on others is handled. I’m team women for this book. Thank you for the amazing read! Highly recommend.

The Bitter Truth is about a governor who will go to great lengths to bury the truth of his past. Dominic is the governor of North Carolina and his wife Jolene is proud of him and very supportive of her husband’s achievements.

They met in college and fell in love instantly. With Jolene’s money she helped fund Dominic into politics. Although, her father never trusted Dominic. He knew Dominic had a lot to gain by marrying Jolene that’s why he continued to control how much money he gave to her.

Being a good wife meant that she supported her husband and kept a healthy figure. In high school Jolene was overweight. In college she made it her mission to lose weight. When she did Dominic noticed her. Dominic has been focused and driven to become governor that he’s made it his life’s mission.

Ten years married and Dominic is on the campaign trail once again. At one of his rallies he sees a woman who spikes fear and concern in him. Then a few days later he starts getting letters asking him where Brynn is? Dominic grows paranoid as the reality of that night with Brynn starts to unfold.

The Bitter Truth is told from three points of view: Brynn, Dominic, and Jolene. There are four parts to the story. Shanora Williams writes a fast paced thriller that has my mind swirling with possibilities. It’s an exciting read. Let me tell you this is one helluva a story. The twists and turns keep coming at you. What a fun and fantastic ride. I was beyond thrilled and ready to ride again. This fore sure will be a bestselling book. This book is by far Shanora William’s best work to date.

WHOA! This was a wild ride! This book came right out of the gate with drama and it did not stop until the very end! This book had it all - a great plot, well developed characters, dram, lies, betrayal, deceit, suspense, and twists. There were plenty of WTF moments as I read this one! I was enthralled the ENTIRE way through this book. It developed at a great pace, and keep me entertained. I was invested in the characters and what was going to happen to all of them. I could have never predicted what happened at the end. Just when I thought I had it figured out, there was another twist that gave me whiplash. Everything I believed to be true was wrong! One of the best domestic thrillers I've ever read!

_______

“He’s hiding something. He’s lying. Figure it out.”

Jolene (Jo) fully supports her husband Dominic who is the governor of North Carolina. Lately though, they seem to be going through the motions. At a campaign rally, Dominic notices a strange woman who seems to be staring at him oddly. Dominic has been receiving threatening notes and fears she’s stalking him. He does have secrets, but no one could possibly know about that night. Could they? Jo knows her husband is keeping something from her, but despite her reassurances to help him through anything, he refuses to let her in.

THE BITTER TRUTH started off with a bang and did NOT. LET. UP! The intensity and pacing was spot on for me. Full of secrets, lies, and revenge, I read this lickity split! Shanora Williams does a brilliant job of creating multifaceted, richly nuanced characters, each with motivations solely their own. I loved the multiple POVs, especially of the same situations, along with the dual timelines. Just when I started to get a feel for someone, something would happen and I found myself thinking, “Wait, they did what?!” As layers are revealed, more and more truth comes to the surface. I couldn’t turn pages fast enough for all the deliciously twisted behavior.

Domestic thrillers can be hit or miss for me and this was absolutely a HIT! Don’t even get me started on the gasp worthy shocking moments. This was my first book by Shanora Williams, but certainly won’t be my last. I ATE UP every popcorn kernel of this twisty over the top thriller, and licked the butter off my fingers in satisfaction!

There is some difficult content so please check trigger warnings. I have listed some potential spoiler warnings below.

⚠️Content Warnings: suicide, sexual situations, affairs, language, misuse of drugs, mental illness, eating disorder, body shaming, domestic abuse, violence, gun violence, rape, death

Dark and twisty! Governor of North Carolina, Dominic Baker, is running for a second term. His wife, Jolene, is the perfect politician’s wife with a warm smile and friendly word or handshake for his supporters. College sweethearts, they appear to have the perfect life. At one of the political rallys, a woman approaches the power couple with a gift. But does she have an ulterior motive? Dominic had a complicated childhood that has haunted his adult life. He is a bad man who has done very bad things. It only stands to reason that someone who was wronged may come to exact revenge. But who could it be? He has very powerful allies that help him clean up the messes he’s made.

This is my first book by Shanora Williams and I’m so glad I have a few of her other works on my bookshelf! I don’t generally enjoy political thrillers but I loved this one! The politics do not dominate the story line. This is a story of heinous crimes done by a man with a god complex and much deserved revenge. This story was complex, intricately plotted, with well developed characters. I did not see the twists coming and found the ending to be very satisfying.

Thank you Netgalley, Kensington Publishing and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. This book will be available for purchase on June 25, 2024

This is an entertaining, fast-paced domestic suspense/thriller. The two main characters are Dominic Baker, who is the governor of North Carolina, and his wife Jolene. On the campaign trail for reelection, they seem to be the perfect couple who have everything, but those close to them know their secrets. Jolene can tell her husband is hiding something, and she is determined to find out what it is. The book is told from both Dominic and Jolene's points-of-view, as well as from another person in a past timeline. It's interesting to see the story from other sides and helps you get to know more about the main characters, for better or worse!

I appreciate that the author lists trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. There were three scenes of emotional and physical abuse as well as assault that were disturbing, but they were brief, and I was able to skim over the parts that bothered me and continue with the story. Unlikable characters are the rule, not the exception in this book. However, there is a friendship between two people who play a large part in the book that shines through the other dysfunctional relationships. There are several twists and although I was able to predict a couple of them, there were plenty of other plot turns that surprised me.

Oooh a political scandal, relationship drama, and a terrible secret (or is it secrets?!) from the past. This book took so many turns, right when I thought I had the story figured out, we were hit with more jumps into the past for the true answers and many shock waves throughout. I loved Jolene (the political wife) and related to her so much with her struggle for acceptance... and whether that "acceptance" really led to the happiness she was looking for. There are some REALLY tough scenes in this book and when I say I hated some characters in this book... phew. The character descriptions and developments were so well done and the different POVs (past and present) were perfectly timed. The story was nicely medium paced - enough time for it to sink in the secrets behind the masks, but also to keep you on your toes the entire time.

This is an amazingly twisted book. I don’t usually enjoy books that have political figures as the main characters but I loved Shanora’s other thrillers and knew I had to read this anyway. Every character in this book has secrets and when you think you have it all figured out, more twists pop up. I loved the overall message of the book. The most important thing to take away from this book is to make sure you have a friend like Shavonne and always be a Shavonne.

Kicsit meglepődtem a GR százalékos arányán, az írónő korábban kiadott könyveihez képest ez most elég magas – most kezdek rájönni, miért.

Kezdők, illetve haladók is ugyanúgy olvashatják, a cselekmény alig tartalmaz nehezebb kifejezéseket.

This was a dark and twisted thriller that focuses on all the things that can cause people’s true demons to come to life…. Money, power, greed, and ohhh sweet revenge!
Jolene is introduced as the supportive wealthy housewife to Dominic, who is running for his second term for Governor. To the outside world they seem like the perfect couple, but to those close to them .. very close they knew the dark truths and secrets. There is also Brynn who has her POV chapters. How is she connected? Keep reading! The darkness starts when Dominic starts getting threatening messages about his past that he doesn’t want anyone to know. And thus begins the ride of who to trust, who is lying, what are they hiding, and most importantly, what lengths will they go to protect that from coming out?
This book was definitely a very easy read and kept me wanting to keep reading because it was definitely giving good twist and juicy details. However I did find the first half to be more interesting than the second half due to the fact that I felt the second half started to drag a little bit and started to become a little bit more than a little bit far-fetched. I will say I didn’t see some of the twist coming, however like I said the ending and how it all wraps up and everyone is connected was just a little bit too far-fetched and unrealistic for me. I did really enjoy how the author focused on female empowerment and of course this was a book filled with men with huge ego, driven by power and the desire for everyone to think they are these amazing trust individuals, when in fact who knows who they really are.
Simply due to a lot of eye rolling moments thinking about how a lot of the stuff wouldn’t ever happen. I am going to write this book a 3.5.

I absolutely loved this book! I’m not the type to give anything away. But I want you all to read this book!
Shanora never misses. I’m glad I was able to get an arc copy of this thriller book that is coming out next week.(thank you @netgallery) I love how good a thriller book can build up a suspense and have you overthinking what will happen. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, I was wrong. Oh well that just made me keep turning the pages.

I thought a book of 4 parts, coming out to 69 chapters, it would take me forever to finish but nope! Only 2 days and I’m not shocked. I’m a fast reader especially when the book is really good. This book was really good.

I love the different POV, the back stories and current events. Everything made sense and blended together perfectly! Love a black politician with drama and honeyyy it was some juicy drama.
I will definitely recommend this book to all my thriller book lovers! 🙌🏽

Side note: there are some triggers as rape, domestic violence, weight issues, mental health and suicidal.

Special thanks to Shanora Williams and NetGalley for this early release of The Bitter Truth in exchange for my honest opinion. Overall this wasn’t a bad thriller it was good. The first half in my opinion was much better than the second half. Because I read a lot of thrillers I feel like it’s getting more and more difficult to shock me or stand away from the crowd of other thriller books. A lot of this book seemed far fetched. The premise was awesome and the characters were likable. After part 2 began it just kind of lost me. Things didn’t make sense to me and I found myself saying really ?? And how is this even possible …then again it is fiction so to each their own! I wouldn’t say skip this I just wouldn’t say it’ll be an unforgettable thriller you read. This was my first book by this author but I am open to reading more of her work in the future!

This thriller was an easy 5 star read for sure! I absolutely love Shanora's writing; she keeps you engaged for the whole roller coaster ride.

Dominic and Jolene Baker are a power couple residing in North Carolina. Dominic has found himself in the governor's seat for the last 4 years and he's up for reelection. Jolene, his doting wife, follows him to his campaigns.

Dominic receives several threatening letters. Dominic has a secret, and someone knows. Dominic plans to do everything in his power to keep this secret hidden from everyone, including his wife. This secret could ruin Dominic as a person and as governor.

Jolene notices Dominic has become withdrawn. He's stopped talking to her and refusing to answer questions. Jolene is now making it her sole responsibility to find out what Dominic is hiding.

This book is full of twists and surprises. Definitely check your trigger warnings before reading. I would highly recommend this book, and any of Shanora's other thrillers without question!! Thank you to Shanora Williams and Kensington Books and Netgalley for this ARC!!

The Bitter Truth by Shanora Williams is an absolutely captivating read from start to finish. I want to thank Kensington Books for sending me a copy in exchange for my review.

This mystery thriller kept me up late into the night, eager to uncover what would happen next. The story was both compelling and entertaining, with a narrative that skillfully entwines characters caught in a web of lies driven by power and greed. The characters were well-developed and intriguing, making the journey even more enjoyable.

Beyond its thrilling plot, the book offers valuable insights into the destructive nature of deception and the lengths people will go to for power. It reminds us of the importance of integrity and the profound consequences of our actions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery.

The Bitter Truth is a dark and twisted thriller that captivates with its intricate narrative and multifaceted characters. Governor Dominic Baker of North Carolina is vying for a second term, with his wife, Jolene, personifying the perfect politician’s spouse. Their seemingly blissful marriage is tested when an enigmatic woman presents them with a gift at a political rally …

Ms. Williams perfectly balances a domestic thriller against a political backdrop without delving excessively into politics. She focuses on themes of deceit, vengeance, and subtly, female empowerment. The story is filled with twists, shocking turns, along with malicious figures in power, making it easy to empathize with the female characters.

The tension and anticipation make for a riveting read, leaving readers yearning for justice and revenge.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for an ARC of The Bitter Truth.

I've had this one on my TBR since it was announced, so I am sad to say that this was not my favorite. From very early on, the story felt like one big set up for a dramatic ending, instead of naturally introducing the characters. I didn't get to know any of the characters well enough to like them or root for a good outcome for them.

I loved Sharona Williams' last release and will continue to read her work in the future, but this was just ok.
