The volume title is on the money. Made to Suffer is virtually what every remaining person has to do, to survive the Walking Dead universe. Rick and his community are under attack by the Governor and his Woodbury community. Who will win... or better still, who will survive?
A great battle portrayal, because ultimately nobody is military trained so Kirkman and Adlard draw out a compelling and realistic confrontation with lots of bad decisions on both sides.. which all comes to a conclusion that no one saw coming! 9 out of 12, Four Star read.
Read in 2019, 2017, 2013 and 2011!

Sometimes The Governor just knows how to make me laugh. He's nice like that:
“There is evil in this world and not all of it is the form of those undead monsters clawing at our fences”
Has anyone ever uttered a more fucking ironic line in the history of the Walking Dead?
Well I suppose he has to manipulate his followers into believing in him. But I think if any of them actually buy into his lies at this point, they have a serious, serious, problem. Sometimes I wonder if he is actually delusional. Perhaps he actually thinks he is good in his own twisted way. Perhaps he is so far gone that he thinks his actions are justifiable, good even. He really is a perfect first villain for this series.
It was great to see this conflict brought to a close in this issue. I guess the group have finally realised that it takes more than high walls to create real safety. It doesn’t really exist anymore. Not when men like The Governor infect the apocalypse. I’m also glad to see the story move forward, as harsh as it may sound, as cold as it may sound, Rick losing his baggage will allow the story to evolve much further. Those awkward characters that just aren’t strong enough to survive have finally all fallen. Even darker days are no doubt ahead, and I can’t wait to see them.

The eighth installment of The Walking Dead should be titled: Santa ate the Easter Bunny, then raped the Tooth Fairy and hung himself. Robert Kirkman chose to go with Made to Suffer.
In case you didn’t get it…this story is all bad. I challenge you to have an ounce of happiness left in your soul after reading this chapter. I couldn’t smile for a week. Suffice it to say, set this one down and find a quiet place and get all your cryin’ done before trying to be around other people.
No I won’t even give you a hint as to who, if anybody, is left by the end. However, I will say that Kirkman takes a real chance here. Any of the delicate souls who survived what happened to Michonne a couple of episodes back at the hands of The Governor, might actually surrender after reading Made to Suffer.
What really stood out in this volume, besides the heaping of bad things on out protagonist, was the look into the psyche of a sociopath. If you’ve ever wondered what makes a villain tick, Kirkman gives you a peek behind the curtain. You are able to see how sick bastards like Jim Jones, Adolf Hitler, and David Koresh get inside people’s minds and distort reality to fit their twisted agendas/ (yeah, boo-hoo, I made a list of controversial figures that some people won’t like. If you read zombie fiction and THAT offended you, try the Twilight Series.)
When you reach the final page of this one, you may almost dread picking up the next one. Of course...like me���many of you will continue on like a battle-weary veteran. However, unlike when I first read it, you can pick up volume nine and dig right in. I actually needed those few months to digest all that transpired.
Do yourself a favor: take the time to re-read this issue. It deserves the time and you may be able to savor the amazing ability of Kirkman to reach down and pull out a part of your heart and spirit. Those who may have doubted my earlier claims that Robert Kirkman is indeed the new king may finally see what I’ve seen for so long.
I only have two words for Mister Kirkman before digging into the next offering: Thank you!

The prison fight! Well the Governor in the comic is pretty psycho. He was in the show too, but in a much more restrained and less outwardly ranting way. In any event, the prison battle is grisly.
We lose some characters and the rest are scattered as they flee the prison. How stressful. Carl and Rick are on the run together, and so far Carl has proved much more calm and level headed than Lori ever was. Hopefully there will be a little time for calm before they are in the fire again.

This issue of the comic was brutal and sad i was literally on the edge of my seat throughout the whole issue it was crazy!
The comic begins with governor where he was left after the brutal attack that was caused by Michonne in a previous issue. The governor is on the war path after recovering from his injuries and gets Woodbury to prepare for an assault on the prison, So the first assault doesn't go to plan Andrea takes out a few of the Woodbury residents which makes them retreat and in result their first assault is unsuccessful. However the same day the Governor and the residents off Woodbury return for their second assault on the prison and are this time more successful as some of the group have left the prison after the first assault leaving the remaining group outnumbered.
So much death in this comic is so sad to see some of the group lose their lives in this attack of the prison by the vial vindictive Governor. We start to lose some of the main core group who have been in the group since the first and second issues, Tyreese is the first to be killed by the Governor when he has his head cut off by Michonne's sword. Axel is the second casualty of the second assault on the prison when he gets shot in the head trying to help the group set up the defence. Patrica is the third casualty of the group being shot by a Woodbury resident. Billy and Hershel are the fourth and fifth casualties of the group, with Billy shot by a Woodbury resident and urges Hershel to leave him so he can escape however Hershel stays by his son's side and is eventually shot by the Governor. Alice is the sixth casualty of the group she is shot while covering Rick, Carl, Lori and Judith as they try to make their escape and Alice is eventually shot dead by the Governor. The final casualties of the group are Lori and Judith when the Governor orders Lilly to shoot at the grimes family, Lilly does shoot Lori in the back causing her to crush Judith beneath her weight killing Judith instantly.
I was so angry when the governor asked Lilly to kill lori but i am so glad that she realised and sickened by this killed the governor herself leaving him to die and taking the remaining Woodbury residents away from the prison. The ending of this issue leaves you on a cliffhanger with so many other characters all over the place it makes you wonder if they can all meet up with each other again.

Great volume of comics. This one didn't have as much character development as the comics usually do but I can forgive that because this volume had a lot of action and by action of course I mean death. It was quite slow to get to the conclusion though and there's still a lot of questions to be answered so maybe it was a teeny bit dragged out. I loved learning about the governor. He's such a sick dude but I love that crap. Lots of characters I liked and disliked died *sigh* but that's just the way it is in this comic. Some of the "noise" effects in this comic are hilarious. I love saying them out loud and then laughing at how silly I sound. I can't wait to read the next comic to see what happens because the group (or what's left of it I should say) are basically screwed. Oh, yes and shoutout to Andrea for being a class bad-ass.

This book marks the end of the first act of The Walking Dead - and maybe even the end of the series for some readers! Each volume in this series has gotten progressively darker and more gruesome but Volume 8 is challenging you to stick around because it’s so outright disgusting. I’m thinking of one page in particular near the start where you get necrophilia, incest, and paedophilia all at once! I know, just one of those elements would be sickening to see - but all three? Wow.
And it’s completely unnecessary! We already know the Governor is a sick puppy after the whole decapitated heads in boxes in his living room scene(s), so seeing him frenching his zombie daughter? Ugh. At least I think that’s what he was doing, removing his daughter’s teeth so he could get in close and open-mouth kiss her without her biting him… I don’t know why Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard thought we needed to see that - and even more surprising that Image would publish that! - but the scene’s there.
It’s a testament to the strength of the story that I saw such a horrible scene and kept reading - and will keep reading the series - because if I wasn’t invested in the story, I’d have dropped the book and walked away. All I can say is Kirkman and Adlard are two messed up people. Is that what the subtitle refers to - the suffering these two put their audience through?
Anyway - the rest of the book. The last page of the last volume showed the Governor rock up to the gates of the prison and begin their attack. The opening chapter of this book takes us back to after Michonne had fled Woodbury after nearly torturing the Governor to death and follows his story up to the current event. And even though the Governor and the rest of Woodbury have a tank and several troop carriers, not to mention superior numbers and tons of guns, they have a dickens of a time trying to storm the prison.
Once the siege kicks off, the volume becomes super exciting and barrels along at a breakneck pace until the end. Kirkman has no problem killing off characters and he has a gleeful time chopping down half the cast in this book. Characters I had thought would’ve stayed for longer get cut down and the entire paradigm of the story shifts.
And Michonne - this woman is a freakin’ superhero! She’s easily become the most interesting character for me as, once things begin, she springs to life, grabs her sword and off she goes! I think it’s because she’s a very proactive character - the others in the group react to the Governor while she meets the threat and THEN goes after them in her own way. Her story keeps getting more interesting.
Hell, the whole story keeps getting interesting! After the deaths of so many characters and the new situation of the survivors, who knows where this series is headed and which characters will live? Get your sick bags ready as The Walking Dead shuffles onwards to (probably) filthier “artistic” territory.

Oh man... So brutal. So fucked up.
It really shouldn't be, but it's still surprising to me how naive people are, how willing to blindly follow anyone in a position of authority, no matter how obviously fucking psychotic he is.

I will preface my comments by saying that I hate the Governor character and storyline. I hate every single thing about it. It has nearly ruined the series. On top of feeling like something the author introduced so he could shoe-horn more overt drama and action into what had actually become a thoughtful character-driven narrative, it also feels too convenient that there'd be someone like that, in a community like that, so ridiculously close to the prison. Everything about the Governor and his community would've been a better fit for the early issues when Rick & co. were wandering around looking for a place to stay -- it could have prompted a lot of character development and exploration of human nature in that context, since after settling into the prison Rick & co. would be living in constant fear of the Governor or another like-minded individual attacking them. But as it stands it just feels like the sort of thing a Hollywood producer might have demanded be introduced into a film he felt wouldn't reach a wide enough demographic.
That said, this volume does an excellent job of establishing how and why the Governor is still alive and why he was able to rally so many people to attack the prison compound so many times. When he showed up at the end of the previous volume I felt like it was a cop-out, something I might have expected from a Batman or Superman villain, but which didn't fit in the context of "The Walking Dead". Kirkman, however, does an excellent job of establishing his survival, in addition to the timing and motivation for the attack. As much as I hate the Governor and what his character's introduction brought to this series, this volume handles it well.
All that said, this is one of the most brutal installments in the series and certainly one of the most depressing. It is not for the faint of heart, and the loss of SO MANY major characters, including a horrible decapitation and an act of infanticide... Well, the death of the Governor at the end can't make up for that. I may keep reading the series, but it's only because I bought the next two volumes before reading this one. I'm finding it harder and harder to stay emotionally attached to any of the characters -- why bother when Kirkman is just going to contrive newer, more horrific ways for them to die? By the end of this volume, almost everyone who makes the series worth reading is dead, except for the increasingly-uninteresting Rick Grimes & son and the annoying magic-ninja Michonne (anytime she's involved my suspension of disbelief is shattered). Every single character aside from those three is turning into the zombie/rifle-fodder one associates with teen horror films, and when I stop caring about the characters...when i stop feeling the need to keep track of their names and their personalities...well, it may soon be time to stop reading the series all together. I can get the same nonsense from any B-movie about zombies.

HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED. This was so brutal and crazy and wow I can't even fathom what just happened. I'm so upset that I don't have the next volume with me at the moment so I'm left with a cliff hanger of sorts. I know I've seen the show so I have an idea of what happens next but the comics are so different form the show. It's different but also the same. I just aksjdlajsla I CAN'T.

The Governor is alive and he's a ruthless bitch. They really should've taken the opportunity to kill him when they had the chance. I can't believe the amount of death in this volume. Tyreese got his head cut off with a sword by The Governor (in the show it was Hershel so I thought it was interesting that they changed it), and it was so sad. They just had to stand and watch while it happened. Poor Tyreese. He was a HUGE character in these comics and I was shocked to see him die that way. Then, Hershel also gets hot in the head and he basically just gives up and lets The Governor shoot him like what the fuck Hershel? Maggie is still alive out there and she needs you. I was disappointed that Hershel just gave up like that, especially being as religious as he is. He seemed to have the most hope out of all of them. Then fucking Lori died with Judith in her arms like what the fuck!!!!!!!! I didn't know Judith died in the comics and how can they kill a baby ugh. I'm so depressed. I wasn't sure how Lori was gonna die but that was so shocking. The way Rick and Carl are able to get over it so quickly and keep running is shocking. I thought for sure it would make them stop and turn around but nope. I really enjoyed that scene where Rick and Carl are leaving the prison and Rick is saying "Don't look back Carl," because it's EXACTLY like the tv show and I can't believe how perfect they got that scene. I was so excited about it.
But wow so many people died and The Governor is still alive.. or so it seems? I was kind of confused at the end and it was hard to tell if he survived or not but I'm pretty sure he's still alive. If he is alive I wonder how the Governor will eventually die, cause in the show he died as he was trying to take over the prison, so now I'm curious to see where that is going to go. Ugh, I'm so addicted to these comics now. I like that it's different from the show but it's also very similar too. They keep some of the same story lines but it happens to different characters, and then they'll completely shock me at times and it'll be nothing like the tv show. I never know what to expect and it's exciting and it's like getting to watch the show all over again. I'm so excited to continue reading this!

The Governor is alive and he's a ruthless bitch. They really should've taken the opportunity to kill him when they had the chance. I can't believe the amount of death in this volume. Tyreese got his head cut off with a sword by The Governor (in the show it was Hershel so I thought it was interesting that they changed it), and it was so sad. They just had to stand and watch while it happened. Poor Tyreese. He was a HUGE character in these comics and I was shocked to see him die that way. Then, Hershel also gets hot in the head and he basically just gives up and lets The Governor shoot him like what the fuck Hershel? Maggie is still alive out there and she needs you. I was disappointed that Hershel just gave up like that, especially being as religious as he is. He seemed to have the most hope out of all of them. Then fucking Lori died with Judith in her arms like what the fuck!!!!!!!! I didn't know Judith died in the comics and how can they kill a baby ugh. I'm so depressed. I wasn't sure how Lori was gonna die but that was so shocking. The way Rick and Carl are able to get over it so quickly and keep running is shocking. I thought for sure it would make them stop and turn around but nope. i read some pages twice to believe that this actually happened
what an amazing terrifying shocking volume :O
of course after we saw the last volume "the Calm before " we should of known that this one will be mind blowing , i knew that but not like this :(
yea its a big different than the show and that's what makes us who saw the show and reading the comics live in it and still shocking

On the top of this review box it says "what I learned from this book." What I learned from Vol. 8 of The Walking Dead is not to fall in love with characters. In a series where the cast is introduced and killed off on a fairly regular basis, this collection is absolutely brutal to the regulars. Seriously, when you get to the final panel, the series as you know has wholly and completely changed for good. This story is about battle and loss and a writer who has the guts to destroy his own creation in order to build it back up again. This is the Shiva of comic books. I have a feeling by the time this series calls it a day, it will go down as one of the best of all time.

Repeatedly. Holy cow. I expected a pretty horrific battle, but the consequences of this one where more than I had bargained for. Did this many main characters die in the TV series? Wow. And that decapitation was something else... *shudders*
How can they recover from that? Who is even left to regroup? What will they do next? Crazy. Eat your heart out, GRR Martin!

Volume 8 is still set in the prison. I'm listing the differences between the books and the AMC show as I go along, so if you don't want spoilers, stop reading.

Here goes.
•We get to see a little more behind the scenes in terms of The Governor healing from his wounds and interacting with his zombified daughter. And he's got some weird, messed-up dynamic with his daughter. Possibly sexual, but not sure. As if keeping his zombified daughter alive in his house isn't weird enough.
•The Governor attacks the prison. Rick gets shot. Andrea gets shot. Axel gets shot. None fatal.
•Andrea and Dale, Glenn and Maggie, and all the children leave the prison in the RV.
•Tyreese and Michonne chase after the Woodbury group by themselves. Tyreese get caught and his head gets hacked off in front of the prison by The Governor. Fatal.
•CARNAGE! Axel dies. Patricia dies. Billy dies. Hershel asks The Governor to kill him- The Governor obliges. So Hershel dies. Lori and Judith die...maybe. So much fatal.
•In a fit of remorse for killing Lori on The Governor's orders, a woman names Lily kills The Governor. Seems pretty fatal.
•At this point, the only ones I know for sure are alive are Rick and Carl.
I'd rate this book an M for partial nudity, gore and violence, swearing, and other adult themes.

Speechless... I don't really know what to say. Walking away after this end was hard. I wish I had the next volume right here to dive in to.
Made to suffer was a fitting title... So much happens, this was like a season finale right here. This volume has the knock down, drag out fight that was promised in the last volume. The last volume was more sensitive and slow focusing on rebuilding and preparing for impending doom. Well its here and it comes in a big way. The Governor of Woodbury is ruthless and yet very very good at manipulating his people. From first glance it would seem that this battle was one sided in favor of Woodbury but once things start going down you realize that the Governor's people aren't trained fighters who know how to use guns, and this levels the playing field for Rick and his gang.
By now there are some characters I'm sure you have grown attached to against your better judgement, you know what to expect with Kirkman, do not become attached to anyone because this is a series, a zombie apocalypse, where people die regularly. And this battle, well this battle ends like you wouldn't expect, everything changes from here on out, and by the time I read the last panel I said to myself that I have absolutely no idea where Kirkman will go from here.
I only hope that the television series can capture half the drama and emotion that unfolds in this series. Seriously there were a few times during this volume where I kept saying, "NO WAY!" Shock after shock pulling on your heart strings. If the series can pull it off as well as Kirkman I will be surprised, I can only hope. Bravo Kirkman, another killer volume.

Nicht so spektakulär wie erwartet.
Zwar gibt es in diesem Band praktisch durchgehend Action und für viele der Figuren endet hier die Reise. Aber in der TV Serie hatte das alles irgendwie einen größeren Impact.
Versteht mich nicht falsch. Die Reihe hat mich mittlerweile richtig gepackt und auch das ist wieder ein sehr guter Band. Aber vom Showdown zwischen dem Governor und Ricks Gruppe hab ich mir doch ein wenig mehr versprochen.

The entire series just hit a major low for me here. Later volumes do much to pull it back on track, but I got severely annoyed at the "Look at me and my blaok eye-patch! I'm absolute evil, all the time, and never seem to die!!"
It was a train wreck of a story that felt somewhat like "oh crap, we wrote ourselves into a corner... let's take the whole thing, throw it against the wall violently, and see about writing a better story out of the shattered pieces." The good thing about that? That happening only once isn't a trend. Let's hope it's not.

Unfortunately it turned out to be a trend in the comics. Feels like a Zombie Mad-Lib featuring Rick Grimes at this point (~Vol. 19), so I'm pretty much done with the whole title.
Kirkman has some great ideas and obvious writing chops, but I think he needs a better/stronger editor for the comic. It's clear that through the writers room / producer process, the TV show is benefiting from it. The Unicorn of media - the TV show that's actually better than the book!
I think I would enjoy the TV show much more if I had started with that. At this point, it's like the third interaction of the same story and I'm just bored with it all.

Me ha parecido una bestialidad. Aquí ya ocurre casi todo de forma diferente a la serie y sobre todo de una forma mucho más violenta e impactante. Es un tomo con mucha más acción y se nota, teniendote todo el rato en una tensión continua.

No, big guy, he isn't dead. As we saw in the last volume, The Governor is very much alive and just needs a few bandages before he charges his people on false facts to attack the group he loathes for no apparent reason. Well, he has a reason to loathe Michonne, but it isn't anything he didn't have coming. You get what you give out PHILLIP!
This was a great volume. Michonne and Andrea showed the world that girls can give as much as they can take and more. These two girls are the warriors and I love them.
There isn't really much else to say about this issue besides a lot of people die, women can do more than make you a sandwich, people get what is coming, and there is so much gore..

The pace does not let up in this volume. I must say there is one bad ass femme fatale with a sword in this story. She takes it to the Governor and oh boy some real torture ensues a real gore feast. But she rocks!
They return eventually to the Prison with one person missing a hand and the zombies are still popping out of the woodwork. Loved to hear more from the brutal Governor.
For 2012 there is this help from CDC on being prepared on a zombie outbreak!

This is the eighth volume of The Walking Dead and includes issues 43-48. And holy shit, everything really goes to hell in this one! OMG. I can't believe some of the stuff that happens.
So, the beginning takes us back to the asshole that we've gotten to know as the Governor. Did I mention that I despise this character? Well, I do. With a passion. Anyway, he somehow makes it out alive after Michonne's torture and becomes determined to find out where the jail is. He lies to his people, convinces them this other group of survivors are a threat, and attacks them.
It's a butral confrontation, but Rick and his group aren't going to take it lying down. Nope, they fight back. Still, we manage to lose a chunk of the group in this one--Tyreese, Axel, Patricia, Billy, Hershel... and the most shocking of all, Lori and the baby. OMG. It's all very graphic. Very shocking, and sad.
Wow, I needed to take a deep breath after this volume. But I am very glad that the asshole Governor ends up dying at the hands of his own people. That was justice.

This one is so good, so action packed, and it changes the dynamics of the group (mainly cos they are nearly all dead but still...). Literally everyone at the prison apart from Rick and Carl die. Even the freaking newborn baby :(
