Fake relationship? As if.

I don’t need a man to complete me, but to get my tubes tied before I turn thirty, I do need a husband.

When the former child TV star turned producing director for the angsty hit drama series currently shooting in my hometown comes to me desperate for a favor, the exchange of my services for his seems like a great idea.

I help him relearn how to drive a car, and he acts as my fiancé for a few doctor’s visits.

What could go wrong?

Bingeing 90’s TV shows like Seinfeld and Beverly Hills 90210 have you jonesing for a time when email and cell phones were strange new things, and an app was something you ate before the first course? Then this slow burn, fake relationship, entertainment biz romantic comedy is just what the doctor ordered. Perfect for fans of Meghan Quinn and Lucy Score seeking all the feels in a sweet and sexy romance.

7/25/2023 - Updated for audiobook review

7/21/2023 - audio narrated by Amy McFadden & Alastair Haynesbridge! (Currently $4.99 direct from author)

5/9/2023 - This is the third book in Karen Grey’s Carolina Classics series. While each book focuses on a different couple, there’s definitely some story lines that will weave throughout the whole series making these best enjoyed reading them all and in order.

There's a fine line to balancing a fiercely independent main character with providing readers a believable romance story all while maintaining the essence of who they are. Grey accomplishes that with Dani & Luke in this fake-relationship-becomes-true-love.

I love how Luke supports Dani's mission to permanently prevent becoming a parent while unpacking how her fears are impacting the rest of her life. Dani helps Luke discover who he is outside of the roles he's been playing his entire life. These two also have a lot of fun on the beach and in the bedroom. Add in two adorable dogs and it's a great story.

As with the others, we catch up on how the previous couples are doing, there's a HFN for Dani & Luke, and a cliffhangerish tease for the next book.

Note (spoilerish):
I just want to say how awesome it is that Grey gives us a character who doesn't want children and that her HEA isn't predicated on changing her mind about that.

Narration:
I absolutely adored this narration by Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge. Not only do they compliment each other perfectly but both did a fantastic job of giving all the characters unique voices (including nailing the coastal/southern accents). Dani’s determined yet vulnerable personality shines with McFadden. Haynebridge is ideal for Luke. Love, love, love this listen!

I received advanced copies of the book & audio from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This fabulous series keeps giving and giving, and I couldn’t be happier. This time, the main trope is fake marriage, but neither the circumstances surrounding the arrangement, nor the actual terms of the arrangement, are common. Trust this author to keep you on your toes.

Dani has a huge and highly demanding family, so she decided some time ago not to have kids of her own. When the fear of getting pregnant keeps her from having a healthy sexual life, she chooses to get the most effective type of birth control: sterilization. But she’s young and isn’t in a steady relationship–and most doctors she sees have a backward-looking mindset. And that’s when the fake marriage comes in handy. But who’s the lucky groom?

Lukas was in Wallington two years before when he was still an actor. Since then, the former child star has quit his acting job for a behind the scenes role. He has good memories of Dani’s work as his driver, so he requests her once more. But he needs to get back into driving a car, and who’s more perfect than a professional driver? Maybe they can strike a deal. A very secret deal.

See? Unusual arrangement: driving lessons for a fake marriage until Dany can get the surgery she wants. The unusual terms come later, when their attraction for each other lead to some very special exposure therapy.

I loved everything about the premise. With the chemistry between Dani and Luke, I was guaranteed some sexy shenanigans and funny situations, and I got them. Personal fave: I loved how they discover things in the bedroom together, and how that makes Luke reflect on his past experiences with lucidity and humility.

Actually, Luke was cast in the same mold as the author’s other male characters–a mold I hope she never breaks. Nothing alpha about him, he’s confident and vulnerable and nice but not naive. He makes mistakes, but he has a good heart, though he sometimes thinks with the wrong head. He’s… just a man. And that makes him super sexy in my opinion. Dani is also a stronger female characters than most. She has flaws, but she knows what she wants.

The author makes a bold move by introducing tubal ligation in her story, and to make it clear that love won’t change the very personal decision Dani made. And I admire her for it. Happily ever afters with a bunch of kids are nice, but I enjoy something different once in a while.

Quickie

- Series: Carolina classics #3 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #romcom #90’s #nostalgia #celebrity romance #fake marriage
- Triggers: past car accident and associated trauma, off page voluntary female sterilization
- Main couple: Danielle Goodwin & Lukas Keith
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 5/5
- + exposure therapy for sex, YES! also, I loved that the author didn’t choose the easy way out and made Dany change her mind about tubal ligation
- – neither had any idea what love was supposed to be, color me doubtful

EDIT: aaaaand she did it again. The author casts the most perfect narrators for her characters every time. The female narrator expresses Dani's strength of character pretty well, and knows when to show her insecurities too. The male narrator's voice was very pleasant, and he did great with Luke's somewhat naivety. The narration really enhanced the story, well done.

This was wonderful! I am about the same age as the characters in this book, so I loved taking a peek back at the not-so-distant past. I have fond memories of life before everyone was tethered to a cell phone and enjoyed reading a romance set in the same period when I was young and going on dates myself. I found this story to be incredibly entertaining and had a very hard time putting it down once I got started with it.

Luke, a former child star, has come to town to work as a producing director on a television show. He does not drive anymore and wants to relearn the skill. Dani is certain that she does not want children after helping to care for her numerous siblings growing up. She cannot find a doctor willing to perform a tubal ligation because she is young and unmarried. The pair decide to help each other get what they want and grow closer than they expected in the process. I liked Luke and Dani and thought they were perfect together. The chemistry between them was incredibly well written and I loved how they were able to help each other through a few things.

I listened to the audiobook and thought Alastair Haynesbridge and Amy McFadden did a great job with this story. I found both of their voices to be very pleasant and thought that they complimented each other’s voices very well. I enjoyed the fact that both narrators were able to bring a lot of emotion to their reading which helped to bring the story to life. I had no problem listening to this audiobook for hours at a time and am certain that their performance added to my overall enjoyment of the story.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book to others. This is the third book in the Carolina Classics series but works perfectly well as a stand-alone. I had a great time getting to know this pair of characters and couldn’t wait to see them find their happily ever after. I am a fan of Karen Grey’s writing and look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

I received a digital review copy of this audiobook from the author.

**Audio Review **
I Want It That Way by Karen Grey was a heartfelt, nostalgic marriage of convenience romance that left my heart feeling deliciously happy. I’ve been eagerly waiting for Dani’s romance, and it did not disappoint. Lukas and Dani’s journey from fake to true happiness was full of emotional obstacles to overcome, but together they learned to trust and confide in each other. This book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone.

Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge narrate this audiobook, and it's the first time I’ve heard these two paired together. Amy showcased Dani’s fiery, passionate, and strong-willed personality perfectly in her performance. Alastair’s portrayal of Lukas’ vulnerable, loyal, and charismatic persona was swoony. Both narrators conveyed the slow-burning chemistry between Dani and Lukas brilliantly and had me longing for each and every touch!

Overall, I enjoyed this book. If you are a fan of a fake dating romance with a hot hunky child star turned producer, a strong independent driver on a mission, adorable dogs, driving lessons, two truths and lie, strong female characters, Lawson’s Reach, neck kisses, exposure therapy, one bed, slow burn steamy times, and a HEA drive its way into your heart, then you will love Lukas and Dani’s story. I always look forward to more from Karen Grey.

A fun fake dating/marriage of convenience, dual POV, celebrity romance between a chauffeur and an former child actor turned director badly in need of driving lessons. I really liked that the female lead in this book was so determined to ensure she would never have children. It's sad that she had to jump through so many hoops to get a doctor to perform the procedure (being married was a way to make the process easier).

To offset the heavier topics, the banter and the 90s, Dawson's Creek vibes in this South Carolina setting worked so well and the narration by Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge was excellent! Many thanks to Home Cooked Books for access to an early ALC copy in exchange for my honest review! While this is part of a series it definitely works as a standalone.

I listed to the Audiobook edition.

Dani and Luke first met two years prior to the story when Luke was in town filming a Hallmark movie and she was his driver. Now, he’s back in Wallingford as a producing director on the hit show Lawson’s Reach. He requests Dani as his driver, and then finds out he only has her for two weeks. Unable to drive himself due to post-accident anxiety, he convinces Dani to teach him to drive.

Dani is tired of doctors telling her she can’t get her tubes tied because she’s under thirty and not married. After a half dozen rejections, she is about to call it quits until Lukas Keith needs a favor. On a whim, she suggests he pretend to be her fiancé for her doctor’s appointment in exchange for driving lessons.

Set in the recent past of the late 1990s, I Want It That Way features a delightful fake relationship/forced proximity romance. Dani feels that she’s losing her closest friends to marriage and babies; she’s also tired of everyone in her family wanting something from her. Luke provides a refreshing distraction once she understands where he’s coming from. He’s easy to talk to, not to mention kind and sexy. He understands Dani and doesn’t judge.

I Want It That Way is super cute. Luke had his heart broken when he was young and subsequently spent his whole life pretending. Dani doesn’t let others in because she thinks people just want something from her. Their relationship grows as they spend time together.

Deciding to take a chance and help out Dani, Lukas insists they marry so she can get her surgery. Things get interesting when they need to move in together, and desire takes hold. Yes, it’s a silly premise, but it allows both to open up and let the other in. I love how being together all the time allows each to share more and more of themself. Both characters genuinely like the other and fantasize having a real relationship, yet both are frightened to take the risk to share their feelings, thinking that’s not what the other would want.

Narration: The story is shared in the alternating first person POVs of Dani and Luke. McFadden performs Dani’s POVs and dialogue with a no-nonsense sounding voice, perfect for Dani who knows what she wants and goes after it. McFadden uses a slight southern accent, fitting for the native North Carolinian. Similarly, Haynesbridge’s Luke is a solid, firm voice that is mid-range masculine, yet he allows for hesitation with a softer voice when nervous or fearful. Both narrators utilize a partially-voiced reading style, with slight alterations to dialogue based on gender and age and without a lot of differences between characters of the same gender. The narrators are well matched in vocal tone and speed.

Overall, I enjoyed listening to I Want It That Way. I loved watching the characters take a chance and learn to love.

I enjoyed everything about this slow burn, fake relationship story, the charming characters, the humor and all the feels of this sweet and sexy romance. Dani has taken care of her family for so long she feels like they are taking advantage of her, making her want to have her tubes tied. Unfortunately no Doctor will do it unless she is married. Lukas Keith, is a former childhood actor, and has returned to Wallington to work as a producer on Lawson’s Reach. He has never forgotten his beautiful driver when he was here last time, and how she made him feel. When he needs her help, he offers to marry her so she can get what she needs as well. Dani feels the need to do for herself, not relying on anyone else. Luke doesn't know who he is after being a pigeonholed child acter. They like that they both except each other for who they are, flaws and all. They both get way more out of their time together than either expected out of this arrangement. They make each other feel all kinds of things neither expected, and soon their hearts become invested. But what happens when their arrangement is complete and Luke needs to return to LA, but Dani has a life she loves in Wallington? Can they make it work long distance or is it over before it really starts, breaking both their hearts? This story really tugs at your heartstrings. Dani and Luke are the most genuine people, and are so perfect together. They help and support each other in such a beautiful way and the intimacy between them is off the charts. I also love all of their friends and family, who added so much fun, tension and warmth, making me laugh, cry, and swoon. I really love this Carolina Classics series and can't wait for more!

I Want it That Way is the 3rd book in Karen Grey’s Carolina Classics series. I’ll admit, I read this out of order, but I never thought I was missing anything. It can completely be read as a stand-alone.

I was 16 when Dawson’s Creek came on TV and it was my favorite show, so this series is right up my alley. Set in the late 90’s, there was a lot of nostalgia in this for me.

Luke is a child actor turned producing director for the show “Lawson’s Reach” (yep, it’s fun like that) and Dani, and independent contractor, has been hired to be his driver. She was his driver a couple years before and didn’t get the greatest impression of Luke, but he has his reasons.

Dani wants a tubal ligation and since single women aren’t allowed to make any decisions in this area, without a husband, she needs someone to play that role. Luke needs help getting back behind the wheel, literally, so they strike a deal to help each other.

This was a great slow burn that lead to some steamy times. I loved the development of their friendship and his willingness to help her out, in more ways than one.

It’s refreshing to read a book that’s essentially the opposite of my least favorite trope, accidental pregnancy. Dani doesn’t want children and I was so frustrated with the doctors in the book, more so because this takes place 25 years ago, and this kinda thing is still happening.
I loved that Luke was 100% behind Dani’s decision because it was her body and her choice.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one. This was my first book by Karen Grey, but it certainly won’t be my last.

Thank you to Karen Grey. I voluntarily read an early copy of this book. 4.5 Stars.

After finishing this story, I want to load up the 5 CD changer and take a road trip to the beach. “I Want It That Way” is a fun, sweet and a zigazig-ahmazing 90’s retro story that brings all the feels in the best possible ways.

Dani is an independent contractor who works on the set of Lawson’s Creek doing a little of everything and that includes being a driver to former child star, Lukas Keith. Luke is in town working with the show as a producer and asks Dani for a favor. But in return, Dani has her own favor. Fake marry her so she can get her tubes tied.

I loved the connection and genuine friendship Dani and Luke had. It felt so real and I loved how their relationship grew. Dani is so great and my favorite things about her was her independence and determination. Dani one hundred percent knew she wanted her tubes tied and was determined to make it happen. But thanks to the backwards thinking that still around today, doctors wanted her to be married or thirty. Luke is so sweet and such a good guy that you can’t help falling for him along with Dani. These two are so relatable in the individual struggles they have and the struggles they have as a fake couple. I felt like I was reading about a real life couple who I could easily be friends with.

Do you want to be transported back to the days of pagers and Bermuda shorts? To Bittersweet Symphony on the radio and answering machines? Karen Grey's "I Want It That Way" is a fake dating romance set in the 90's that follows a heartthrob actor turned director and a location scout/driver as they navigate a fake relationship that is quickly getting real. The story looks at women's reproductive rights, mental health issues, grief, and complex relationships.

This slow burn rom com turns up the heat past the half way mark and Dani and Luke's chemistry is something else. This is book three in a series and I'm going to have to go back to the beginning to find out more about this retro 90's world.

Thank you to Karen Grey and Victory Editing for the ARC and the opportunity to read this book early.

Dust off your old Nokia phones and brush up on your snake game because we’re going back to the 90s!

Finally! Dani’s story has landed in the Carolina Classics, and I’m here for it!

Dani has been one of my favorite characters amongst the five friends this series focuses on since the introduction of them in  I’ll Stand By You.  In this book, Dani wants to get her tubes tied, but not one doctor she has seen will agree to perform the procedure until she is either 30 years old or married. But Dani is a determined woman who knows what she wants in life or, in this case, what she doesn’t want. And she won’t be deterred. When Lukas Keith, a former childhood actor, comes to Wallington to work as producer on Lawson’s Reach, needing a favor from Dani, he might be just to solution she needs. Agreeing to give him driving lessons in exchange for him  pretending to be her Fiancé for a few doctor’s visits might be crazy but she’s limited on options. he agrees, and things quickly spiral, leaving them both in over their heads …

Lukas and Dani tangled themselves up in their own web, and I’m not mad about it in the least.  This couple was very relatable and normal once you looked past the virtual strangers getting fake engaged part.  Dani knows who she is and what she wants in life,  whereas Lukas had struggled to find his true self and place in life. And though they helped one another with different obstacles and they grew close and developed a trust in each other,  they ultimately didn’t make huge life decisions for anyone but themselves without the other trying to change them. There was instant attraction and chemistry, but this was not an instant love story. I like that they got to know one another,  that they talked about their days and had work problems. They had meals together,  took care of each others dogs, and overall just felt genuine. Even the more steamy bits were intimate and intense without being over the top, and it just fit this story and couple. And the HEA was oh so perfect .

Overall, I did enjoy this book. It had the nostalgia, the witty charm, the laughs, and even touch of drama you come to expect from this series. One thing I really love about Karen’s writing is the build-up for the next book she gives you just enough to build your anticipation and leave you thirsting for more. I’ve long thought Dani’s story would be my favorite, but could Whitney’s story take the top in my list? I can’t wait to find out!

I fell in love with Karen Grey's Carolina Classics series last year! If you grew up in the 90's like I did and enjoyed Dawson's Creek, you will love this series!

IWITW is book 3 in the series but you can read it as a stand-alone (but I would suggest reading the other books first).

This is Dani's love story and it's my favorite of the series!!! Fake relationships are one of my favorite tropes so this one made my heart swoon!

Dani was Luke’s driver a few years prior and he had requested her again when he came back to NC to work on Lawson’s Reach. Both have insecurities, both help each other out. They struck up a deal - she would help him with his driving, he would marry her so she could have surgery.

Dani & Luke share a special connection and were both very relatable…it is a nice change seeing a HEA without children included. It is so infuriating that women have to deal with men telling them what they can/can't do with their bodies. I myself had a similar situation after my 2nd child being told I was not old enough (at 27) to make that decision. I am glad that Dani's story was told!

Narrated by
Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge

I Want It That Way is book 3 in the Carolina Classics series. These throwback books are always a joy as I love reliving the quirks of the 90’s including the music and TV show references.

As someone who, years ago, crushed on child star Lukas, Dani has a way of playing it cool when she assists him as a driver on the show he’s now directing. And now she needs his help. So, they enter into a fake relationship to help each other out. I love how Lukas supports Dani as she’s going through this process of getting her tubes tied while the health care powers-that-be want to block her and change her mind. But Lukas is always there to step in and support her. And Dani was there for him, helping work through some PTSD issues regarding his aversion to driving and also the bigger issue of him coming to terms with “aging” out of the teen idol phase. We go along for the ride as they gradually get to know each other and the trust and intimacy grew while they were faking their marriage

Amy McFadden is always great at storytelling her narrations. She is paired here with Alastair Haynesbridge and their voices work well together. Haynesbridge is a new narrator for me and I really love his take on Luke. I will definitely be looking for more books of his

Karen Grey has a talent to weave a story with mature characters who are relatable, throwing in humor and nostalgic elements because of the retro time period. As someone who grew up in LA around the entertainment industry, it’s refreshing to read a book where the author really knows her topic. Grey must have worked in the industry as her knowledge is spot on. She adds these special sound elements that begin each chapter. A car starting for Dani and TV static with a canned laugh track for Lukas’ chapters. These small details really make a great book and show how passionate she is about these retro reads.

I was given a copy for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Book 3 in the series of interconnected stand alones. Characters cross over so while it's not required to read in sequence, it will definitely give the most depth on the characters.

In this one we focus on Luke and Dani. They each need something and the other one is the best person to help them achieve their goals.

Dani was obsessed with Luke as a kid and it's absolutely adorable to hear her inner thoughts and see how she builds off her fangirl knowledge of him. She doesn't want kids and has a bit of a reaction when getting intimate with someone knowing that there is always a minor possibility. And because the world is unfair to the Nth degree, she can't get her tubes tide without a husband to consent or waiting until she's over 30.

Luke helps her out since she's going to help him figure out how to overcome his driving PTSD and get behind the wheel again. He also then gets the idea to help her overcome her intimacy issues without the surgery while they wait for her day in the OR. And as we all know, fake dating leads to marriage of convenience leads to real friendship and real feelings and I AM HERE FOR IT!!!

The audiobook was performed by 2 new to be narrators: Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge. They worked so well together for this story. I loved the mild twang in Amy's voice for Dani, I'm not an accent expert but it felt so genuine for the character. Dani goes through a lot and I was really happy to follow along and watch her fight for what she wants in life. Alastair was terrific as child start turned reluctant actor turned passionate director Luke. It was so great to listen to him find his happy place in the hollywood world and with Dani. His emotional journey dealing with anxiety and PTSD was really great to hear. And his ways of helping Dani with her exposure therapy... yes please, I want more of that.

I requested and was provided with an advanced copy of the audiobook. These are my honest opinions.

4.5 hearts

I was happy to continue the Carolina Classics series with I Want It That Way. This is Dani's story.  I like her so much.  She is so strong, independent, hard-working and a good friend / family member.

Now we get the inside scoop about what she wants, what is difficult for her, what she loves in her life.   The author has certainly included some relevant topics, even today.  It was not right how Dani was treated.   Plus people's feelings are timeless.

Luke was such a great fit for her.  I loved how they both started as a transactional sort of relationship, then they started doing things beyond what was agreed and really became friends, helping each other.  The chapters alternate their points of view which really helps since you know how they are thinking even if they don't tell each other every time.

I enjoyed how we got a bit of the others in the friend group: Violet and Nate, Helen and Sully, Ford, Whitney.  Violet is pregnant and she and Nate get married.  Helen and Sully are happy.  Ford is back from California.  Whitney is still in her odd marriage and her friends only get more worried about her.

Luke and Dani are so good together. I felt all the feels for them. They dealt with their problems but they communicated well with each other. That was excellent since neither had much real experience in a serious relationship, and communication is so difficult.  I highly recommend them - what a great read!

I Want It That Way
Carolina Classics #3
By Karen Grey
Narrated by Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge

There is something about Karen Grey's writing when it comes to the Carolina Classics. I raised my kids in the 90's and it's a nostalgic feel as I go back in time with these books! This fake relationship, childhood star crush had me from the very start. As a childhood star, Luke was on the cover of all the teenage magazines. Between his curly locks and catch phrase he was the one to love. But now, he has come to Wallington to produce the television series, Lawson's Reach. It is in need of a fresh view and he is hoping to bring it. Dani was his driver, and he has a fondness when it comes to her. When she is in need of actor to help her with a problem, he is right there willing to do it! But things never go as planned, and the two end up deeper into the problem than either anticipated. But feelings come into play. Will the two find their way together? Will Dani keep her independent streak and let her childhood crush go? Will Luke give up on his feelings? This is a fun, slow burn story packed with emotions and relevant issues. I fell for these two as they navigate through life. It's messy and scary and wonderful, and Grey pulls it all out with a plethora of emotions. I loved it and as always look forward to hearing more from her.

Grey's pick of Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge could not have been more spot on! I think she heard their voices as she was writing this one. McFadden is that independent, stubborn yet vulnerable under it all woman. Each breath has the right feel and I could totally relate to Dani as she created her. Haynesbridge has a smooth sound, a bit insecure as Luke navigates his new profession. I love how he works through his problems and gives Luke the confidence he gains as time goes on. This team is perfectly cast and a pleasure to listen to.

I haven’t read any of Karen Grey’s other novels, more specifically her other Carolina Classics. I think that if I had, I wouldn’t have felt lost at times with some of the side characters. However, I enjoyed this one. This book tackles some of the viewpoints from the past that weren’t as easily accepted as they are today, and it just makes you appreciate where we are a little bit more despite some of the other things we have to deal with. I Want It That Way is written with both main and side characters that you want to befriend and be their shoulder to cry on, and it ends on a note that leaves me wanting to read the rest of the series in order to find out more of their stories!

Dani, a driver for the stars who also works as a location scout, finds herself in the front seat once more for former childhood star, Lukas Keith. The difference this time, is that he’s sporting a different name and job title. Dani has been going from doctor to doctor for years in hopes of getting a procedure done, with no luck as every doctor seems to think it’ll cause her future husband to be unhappy with her decision. So when the former Lukas Keith needs her help and asks for a refresher on driving lessons, she approaches him with a proposition of a fake relationship.

This novel is technically the 3rd in her Carolina Classics series, but it read really good as a standalone as well. This story follows strong and independent driver to the stars, Dani. She has been searching for a doctor to approve the procedure of tying her tubes, however they insist she must wait to be married, because of course a man has all the power to make decisions about a body that isn't his. Feeling pressure to find a husband, and one that's okay with no kids, the perfect opportunity arose in the form of her old client, Lukas Keith, but he's changed since she last saw him and he goes by Luke now. In exchange for her driving assistance, he agrees to a fake marriage for the sake of women's rights. I appreciated the fact that Dani knows exactly what she wants and the author also respected her decision all the way to the end. I enjoyed their relationship, how they supported each other, how they communicated with one another, and how their friendship bloomed so naturally into a romantic relationship. I thought Luke was extremely sweet, understanding, and respectful of Dani, her decisions/choices, and who she is as a person. He never tried to change her, and vice versa with him. The topics hit in this book are relevant and important. I also really enjoyed the 90s flashback! 4/5 and I will be checking out the rest of the series.

I have been enjoying this series very much, and I am glad to get Dani's story. She works so hard, and it matters to her that she is standing on her own two feet. She had a huge crush on Luke when he was a child star, but she wasn't too impressed with the grown man when she drove him around two years ago. But Luke has done some healing and growing in those two years, and this time he is ready to get to know Dani.
Luke worries that he is not a fully formed person after a childhood spent acting and saying lines. But he is so sweet and open with Dani. He puts her first and shows his trust in her. Because Dani cares for the people around her, she responds to that trust and helps him with his fears. It is very romantic and sometimes funny.
While this couple had a very tender connection, Dani spent the majority of the book resisting the idea that she could love or be loved romantically. Because of that and various plot complications, we don't get to see them as a couple until the epilogue. I would have liked to see Dani really feel and accept Luke's love and the care of the people around her. I understand why given the characters and the story, but I didn't feel like she got her full HEA. I really hope that we get to see her feeling that way in the next book.

Story Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.75/5

Overall Rating: 4.875/5 😜
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 (0-5)

What I’m Starry-Eyed Over:
🤩 Retro 90s, small Carolina beach town setting.
🤩 Entertainment business/sitcom production world.
🤩 Great prologue—I love both MCs already, especially Luke because my love language is gifts/giving.
🤩 I love a let’s make a deal—you do this for me, I’ll do this for you.
🤩 Fake engagement/arranged marriage—two of my favorites.
🤩 One bed & forced proximity—thank you for these fantastic tropes. The Two Truths & A Lie is my absolute favorite part of the whole book. ❤️‍🔥
🤩 The way they so lovingly help each other.
🤩 Reproductive rights and women’s health care issues. Lukas Keith is total book boyfriend material for supporting Dani in this area!! And he’s a hottie!
🤩 The two narrators are so entertaining. They express feelings really well: excited, worried, teasing. . .
🤩 Slow burn that I could not stop listening to once I started.
🤩 The first (and second) kiss yumminess. 🥵
🤩 When Dani drinks too much wine without eating all day. 🤣
🤩 And then George & Tina show up. 😂 You can meet them in the series novella What Happens in Carolina and I highly recommend it.
🤩 These two MCs are so absolutely supportive and encouraging of each other—that is true love.
🤩 Secret pining and attraction at its BEST!
🤩 Laugh-out-loud funny.
🤩 Beautiful family/side character LGBTQ+ representation.

What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About:
💫 Please tell me there’s a fourth book in the series. I’m crossing my fingers for Whitney & Ford.
💫 I believe in the HEA, but I just really love some physical connection (steam) after the drama/time apart. But, I still want to listen again, so I guess I’m just being a brat. 🌟

Loving this one! One of my favorites from this author! She does a great job of making this fun, cute and build wonderful characters. The flow is good and it easily kept me engaged with the different personalities. I loved the female MC’s job and attitude. She has a tough task that she is trying to accomplish. Makes me wonder if it was that tough to acquire back then. The connection between these two was felt coming off the pages. I loved all the different ideas that Mr Keith came up with to assist her.

I listened to this on audio. Amy McFadden and Alistair Haynesbridge are the two narrators. They both did a wonderful job portraying these characters. I enjoyed listening to them and look forward to more from them and in this series

I enjoyed this slow-burn contemporary romance between Dani and Lukas. He was an actor, but now is a director and producer. She was his driver. They make a deal to help each other. Dani teaches Lukas to drive, and he is her fake husband. This book was wonderfully narrated by Alastair Haynesbridge and Amy McFadden.

This was a really good fake relationship/friends to lovers romance set in the 90's. Loved seeing Dani and Luke finding their way to become who they truly want to be.

Dani has known for many years that she never wanted kids. Since she was the one to help raise all of her siblings, she just never wanted that for herself. But no doctor would give her the surgery she needed because of her age and the fact that she wasn't married. Enter Lukas/Luke.

Luke was still dealing with a little PTSD from an accident a few year ago and his overwhelming fear of driving. But while he is in North Carolina working on Lawson's Reach, he was only allowed to have a driver for two weeks. He desperately needs Dani to help him be comfortable behind the wheel again. This seems like the perfect compromise...Dani helps Luke drive and Luke helps Dani get the surgery she needs.

This was an instant attraction yet a slow burn romance. I loved seeing these two navigate their feelings and desires together.

Just One More Chapter Please

I WANT IT THAT WAY
By Karen Grey
Narrated by Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge
Such a sweet sweet story! I love Dani and Lukas! Walking through Dani’s self discovery was wonderful. Not just discovering her own sexuality but herself as well. This book deals with so many issues that women deal with and fight for everyday and Karen Grey has dealt with the subject matter in a way that is so very respectful to both men an women. If you’re a Dawson’s Creek fan you’ll love this story! Both narrators are new to me and I will absolutely be looking for more from both of them!

This whole series has been so much fun. And not just because I was in my twenties during the 90's but because the issues still are relevant and it's great to see people talk. Not just about a great book, but also about how important it is for every person to be able to make their own medical choices.
The book is vivid in description and easy to follow along with you don't need to read the other books in the series but it does make for a more fulfilling read.
I have voluntarily left this review.

Narrators, Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge are both new to me and I loved listening to them both as they brought these characters, and story to life. They were perfect as Dani and Luke, balancing each characters strength and vulnerability flawlessly, and made me feel all the genuine emotions these characters felt.
I also listened to the Bonus Epilogue, that is available only to newsletter subscribers, and it was a fun addition to Dani and Luke's story. I really love this Carolina Classics series and can't wait for more!

Audiobook Review

Dani and Luke’s story is emotional, unconventional and with a touch of fun. It’s a story of discovery and re-discovery that touches tricky subjects and welcomes mentality changes, specially for the time.

Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge narrate these two incredible characters, nailing their many personality traits.

Carolina Classic #3 may be my favorite…

“How about we practice acceptance, empathy, and love instead?”

This third installment of Grey’s Carolina Classic series might just be my favorite so far. The handling of the tropes and themes pulled me in from the start and I continuously felt like shouting AMEN as the story played out. I love that Grey doesn’t treat women or womanhood as a monolith; we don’t all have the same needs, wants, desires, or experiences. To have that play out in conjunction with the theme of choice was just *chef’s kiss*.

As usual, Grey makes realistic struggles part of her characters’ lives, taking mental and bodily health seriously, while also still providing the moments of humor and romance that a well-written rom-com should. And the overarching core of the Carolina friend group is still here and never feels forced for the sake of maintaing a series thread, but serves Dani’s particular story.

The theme of choice is skillfully developed throughout - being able to choose for yourself, whether in matters of career (for our H) or in matters of body (for our h). What makes this book so refreshingly different is that both MCs are already sure of their choices, they know what they want and the conflict is not about them questioning or second-guessing themselves; rather, the friction is more that there are others around them pushing, thinking they know better what Dani and Luke need. I love that both characters know that those voices are bs; and keep to their guns despite the opposition. We don’t all have to make the same choices to live a fulfilling life, and the world would be a better place if more people practiced that kind of empathy.

Having a partner who respects your choices and accepts you as capable of knowing your own mind is the romance we all deserve. Someone who understands the true gift of not only being heard, but being heeded. In a conversation with his mother Luke asks, “Can you please try and hear me?” And I think both he and Dani have been looking for that and ultimately find it in each other. Following along on their journey makes for a great read.

My only complaints here are minimal. First, the book could have used another pass by the copy editor, as there are minor but frustrating grammar errors present throughout. And second, as with my feelings regarding Hold on to Me, the explanation of some of the on-the-job stuff for Luke was similarly clunky. Especially with first person p.o.v, it just seems really odd when a character explains their own job in their head. Still, these are minor quibbles and the execution of the themes (choice, autonomy) and tropes (marriage of convenience, sex bargain) with two enjoyable MCs taking the lead make this well worth reading. Can’t wait for the audio version!

May 2023: I received an advance reader copy via the author. All opinions are my own.

Audiobook Addendum

This was another well-cast audiobook on Grey’s part, with solid performances from Amy McFadden and Alastair Haynesbridge. McFadden is a narrator who can be hit or miss for m, however her work here was enjoyable - effective character differentiations and she added to my admiration for Dani as a character. I enjoyed Haynesbridge’s performance slightly more than McFadden’s. It’s been a while since I’ve encountered one of his performances (I think my last was ‘Fake Fiancé by Ilsa Madden-Mills), but his skill has remained consistent, and that skill adds to the pile of positives that makes this audio a great listen. (As does the bonus epilogue from Luke’s pov - pure joy!)

Overall, I definitely recommend this one. Grey continues to audio production A-game to the Carolina Classics series.

August 2023: I received an ALC copy of the audiobook via Home Cooked Books. All opinions are my own.
