Absolutely perfect
Reviewed: 31-05-2024
This may be the first time I have been glad a series was resurrected. The writing, the sound effects, the performances were all absolutely perfect. The cast fell back into their roles flawlessly and the whole thing just brought me so much joy. I didn't realise how much I had missed Mark Heap stammering pompously at people until I got to listen to him insisting that Boyce cease growing a moustache immediately. And oh! Michelle Gomez, how do I love thee. It was wonderful to have Sue White back in mah wee ears for a bit.

An enchanting story with the perfect narrator
Reviewed: 13-01-2021
Spinning Silver reads like an immersive Eastern European fairy tale. The style, the story, the characters are all absolutely beautiful.
Happily for me, it also has the perfect narrator. Katy Sobey has a lovely voice and skilfully brings to life a range of characters. I was happy to see she has narrated a lot of books, including by the same author, and downloaded another immediately.
My only minor complaint is that it's not always immediately obvious when POV has switched to another character that has a less distinctive voice (Miryam, Wanda, Irina) which sometimes causes a few moments of confusion, but I got used to paying attention pretty quickly.

The book was a lot of fun to listen to, very engaging and certainly doesn't waste any time. Dan Stevens has done an excellent job on the narration, he had a lovely voice and made each character distinct (without any breathiness or falsetto for the women yayyyyy!!!)

'Are you happy in your life?' Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he wakes to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before the man he's never met smiles down at him and says, 'Welcome back, my friend.' In this world he's woken up to, Jason's life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. Not great

Review contains spoilers.
The story: I stuck with this one despite myself because of the reviews and I really wish I hadn't. The only thing I can figure is that Blake Crouch draws in people who don't usually read scifi - which is awesome, but unfortunately meant I expected more than the book could deliver. The basic storyline was nothing new, and the characters felt pretty flat. The main character is described as being intelligent a lot but rarely demonstrates it. The middle of the book suffered from the same problem as Long Earth in that describing a series of possible alternate worlds is frankly boring and repetitive. The ending was predictable but not bad - the only problem was by that time I hated the selfish idiot running the show so much I just didn't care what happened.
The narration: I got used to the narrator's voice though I didn't love it, but I find it really grating when male narrators do voices they think are feminine. Made Daniella in particular hard to listen to. Narrator had good pacing and consistent volume though and at his best reminded me of Nick Offerman so I bumped him up a point for that.

Story
1870. A time known as The Great Killing. The vampire clans arose and slaughtered humanity with unprecedented carnage in the northern parts of the world. Millions perished; millions were turned into herd animals. The great industrialized civilizations of the world were left in ruin. A remnant fled south to the safety of the ever present heat which was intolerable to vampires. There, blending with the local peoples, they rebuilt their societies founded on human ingenuity, steam and iron.

Couldn't finish it
Reviewed: 27-02-2020
Maybe it gets better but it was a weak introduction where the characters felt flat and unoriginal. The action was ok but at this point I think if you're going to contribute to the millions of vampire and/or fantasy novels out there, you need to either bring something new or have a great writing style. I don't like to quit books without finishing but life's too short and I have a to-read bookshelf a mile long.
Although I like James Marsters I wasn't happy with his performance here. His speaking volume was very inconsistent, which meant I had to choose between straining to hear at times, or have some words occasionally blast out louder than the rest.

Story
Female fiend? Femme fatale? Or weak and unwilling victim? Around the true story of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the 1840s, Margaret Atwood has created an extraordinarily potent tale of sexuality, cruelty and mystery. Sixteen years have passed since teenaged Grace was locked up for the cold-blooded murder of her employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his lover, Nancy Montgomery. Saved from the gallows where her alleged accomplice was hanged, Grace claims to have no memory of the events which changed her life forever.

Sarah Gadon's narration is perfect, I could listen to her all day. I loved the story, and enjoyed the narrative voice of all of the characters, especially Grace Marks. I'm looking forward to reading more Margaret Atwood.

Story
Exclusive to Audible! Listen to a discussion between the author and the narrator of The Widow at the end of this recording. We've all seen him: the man - the monster - staring from the front page of every newspaper, accused of a terrible crime. But what about her: the woman who grips his arm on the courtroom stairs - the wife who stands by him? Jean Taylor's life was blissfully ordinary. Nice house, nice husband. Glen was all she'd ever wanted: her Prince Charming.

A decent enough story which is elevated beyond decent by the very talented Clare Corbett. I will definitely be looking into other books with the same narrator. Her voice for the widow POV chapters are particularly fantastic, and made me feel as if I was right inside Jean's head.
