Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Lisa Jewell and Paula Hawkins. The perfect couple. The perfect marriage. The perfect game. Effie and Ben May have everything. Success. Beauty. Glamour. But beneath the charming smiles and expensive clothes, a twisted game is in progress. A game for which only they know the rules.

Not typical domestic, was actually very good
Reviewed: 18-02-2024
I knew with Billie Piper that the narration would be good and of course it was flawless, however I’d been unsure whether I’d get into the story and was pleasantly surprised. Definitely an interesting read with plenty of twists and great character development and arcs

Story
Brisbane 1999. It's hot. Stormy. Dangerous. The waters of the Brisbane River are rising. The rains won't stop. People's nerves are on edge. And then... A body is found. And then another. And another. A string of seemingly ritualized but gruesome murders. All the victims are men. Affluent. Guys with nice houses, wives and kids at private schools. All have had their throats cut. Tabloid headlines shout, THE VAMPIRE KILLER STRIKES AGAIN! Detective Sergeant Lara Ocean knows the look. The 'my-life-will-never-be-the-same-again look'.

Took a while for any flow with the story, at first seemed to jump without any apparent cohesion, but came good and was worth persisting

Story
The explosive sequel to the Greig Beck blockbuster Fathomless. Cate Granger is chasing ghosts. The monster shark she once encountered was a remnant of the ancient world - one that had escaped an underwater lair previously sealed off for millions of years. At great cost, Cate and her allies had killed the beast. So, no more ghosts, no more shadows. All gone. Or so Cate thought.

Similar to first, Aboriginal culture is Not ‘primitive’
Reviewed: 05-01-2024
Overall I enjoyed, albeit not as much as first but still comparable and pronunciation was better than first book, however as someone who was privileged to grow up spending time with an Indigenous Aboriginal Elder including Dreaming Camps on country, despite being 1st generation Australian, I was offended that the oldest living continuous culture that in many ways is far more advanced than much of the new ‘modern’ culture was referred to as ‘primitive’, we could improve our safety and health and embracing of diversity by allowing that older knowledge to guide our young modern societies.

Music a big detractor, story engaging

Music between chapters really disrupted the flow, though the narrator swallowing didn’t. Story a couple of questionable scientifically at times but was good. Get rid of the music effects though ggrrr

As much as much of the story was predictable and part of me was frustrated the characters were slow to catch up, the interplay of the continuing characters and bits of history were still enjoyable.
