Yorkshire, 1979

Maggie Thatcher is prime minister, drainpipe jeans are in, and Miv is convinced that her dad wants to move their family Down South.

Because of the murders.

Leaving Yorkshire and her best friend Sharon simply isn't an option, no matter the dangers lurking round their way; or the strangeness at home that started the day Miv's mum stopped talking.
Perhaps if she could solve the case of the disappearing women, they could stay after all?

So, Miv and Sharon decide to make a list: a list of all the suspicious people and things down their street. People they know. People they don't.

But their search for the truth reveals more secrets in their neighbourhood, within their families - and between each other - than they ever thought possible.

What if the real mystery Miv needs to solve is the one that lies much closer to home?

Simply Superb

This is one of those books! One of those books that draw you in from the very first sentence and leave you bereft and longing for more at the end. I’m not going to spoil it with loads of words of my own but, trust me, it is quite simply a masterpiece.

This took me back to my childhood...calling for your best friend, lipglosses and being home before the street lights came on!

Beautifully-told and heart wrenching

Joanna Frogatt delivered to perfection this stunning and harrowing novel which brings back to the forefront the terrible and unforgivable acts of the Yorkshire Ripper.
Forty years later - and all still far too relatable for so many - the domestic abuse threads within this tale are thoughtfully and sensitively penned and we see them unfold through the eyes of a well-rounded YA character.
I loved every strand, every name, every story within the complex web in this family drama set in Yorkshire in a time before mobile phones were a thing.
I’ll think about this story for a long long time and a huge well done for such an accomplished debut.
Bring on Book 2!

friendships

positive vibes from how characters supported each other in difficult times.
I had to suspend belief that girls would hunt for the Ripper in such dangerous ways.

I downloaded the wrong book

this is definitely better than I expected. After I downloaded it and realised it was the wrong book, I gave it a listen. I was worried about the young protagonist being interesting but the complexity of the story, characters and time gave way to something truly compelling. I feel lucky, that I downloaded the wrong book. Happy to have ADD for a change.
