Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Good story not so good characters.
Reviewed: 09-05-21
I have to agree with some other reviewers, the humour is forced and predictable, The main character isn't believable. Feels more like a sassy sitcom character. By the end of the book i was nearly tempted to just start skipping some of the repeatitive natter.
Overall the general story is good, It tries to be the martian again but doesn't quite hit the same mark. The narrator does a good job with what he has.

Story
We are facing an overwhelming army of deadly, invisible enemies. We need a plan - before it's too late. Unlike natural disasters, whose destruction is concentrated in a limited area over a period of days, and illnesses, which have devastating effects but are limited to individuals and their families, infectious disease has the terrifying power to disrupt everyday life on a global scale, overwhelming public and private resources and bringing trade and transportation to a grinding halt.

Great book with lots of details on many different microbes dating back through modern history. It can be easy to be afraid and feel overwhelmed but having people like this who can change how we response and prepare.

A nice change of perspective

It’s an easy listen, a change of pace and perspective in regards to a non uplifted civilisation and a member of an advanced one living amongst them.
Good narration, gave the characters life. Worth a listen.

Different narrator, still good
Reviewed: 25-06-19
Change of narrator did not take away from the story. Yes a bit different in voices and some of the names are said slightly differently but it's not a problem. If you're looking at buying this then you already know to pay attention as you don't get your hand held and eased into the lore.

The man known as Cheradenine Zakalwe was one of Special Circumstances' foremost agents, changing the destiny of planets to suit the Culture through intrigue, dirty tricks or military action. The woman known as Diziet Sma had plucked him from obscurity and pushed him towards his present eminence, but despite all their dealings she did not know him as well as she thought. The drone known as Skaffen-Amtiskaw knew both of these people.

A few tropes but still a good listen
Reviewed: 14-01-19
This was a good listen, it wasn't overly complex or hard to follow. There was some explaining of how things worked but not to excess which was pleasant. I would say that this is an easy to listen story with a few sci-fi tropes thrown in but they don't ruin it. The narrator was good too, didn't overcomplicate the voices, easy to listen too and was pretty consistent. Why not 5 stars? Although it was good it wasn't amazing. It was more like a familiar journey than a new adventure. Would I recommend it to a sci-fi fan? Yes. It's well worth a listen. Would I recommend to a non sci-fi fan? Yes. It's not like some sci-fi books where it goes too deep into the science of things. This book is more about the characters experiences so is a good introduction to sci-fi for cagey people.

Story
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the university at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.

Don't put this off
Reviewed: 18-07-18
I've been reading fantasy books for many years and have to say that this book and the second one are well worth it. The reading of this is superb. Rupert Degas pulls off the accents very well and i have to say i sometimes forgot it was the narrater speaking and not the character come to life. I regret taking so long in getting around to listening to this. I was put off by the sample and the description which did it no justice at all.
Do yourself justice and listen to this.

According to mythology, mankind used to live in 'The Tranquiline Halls': heaven. But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms, but the Voidbringers followed. The Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, the Shardblades. Led by 10 angelic Heralds and 10 orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won (or so the legends say).
