Having seen the tv series Welliver’s voice made it even better

I had bought this book years ago, read by another actor. But after watching and loving the series I found the Mr Welliver’s familiar voice added another, delightful, dimension to the audiobook. I also enjoyed the discussion about making the series.

The first half is a bit frustrating but once the character has left home and we are not still in the well worn world of Pride and Prejudice this book comes into its own.

I have always found Follett’s writings interesting. This is very modern and has particular relevance in 2022. The narrator (a woman) is excellent.

Effective, but aimed at getting you to understand German rather than speak it

Very useful for teaching you to recognise the meaning of spoken German terms but less useful at teaching productive use (ie speaking) of German. The latter needs a pause between the English term and the German equivalent, to give you time to recall the meaning. So its usefulness depends on where you are in your German progress. Most valuable to those who have some knowledge of German and who want to increase their recognition, rather than actively speak more German.

Italian Vocabulary Builder: Resilient Learning Method cover art

No transcript available, and the speaker (who speaks at normal pace) doesn’t repeat the Italian phrase after giving you the English translation. So while you mostly hear the single Italian word being focused on, the Italian sentences themselves are often just a blur. A transcript would add a lot of value.

I find myself wondering when I use terms in German conversation, how I know these things. But having revised this recording before going to Germany I realize that so many things I know how to say became embedded in my brain from this effective programme. Plus, I like the catchy music.

Music is fun and you effortlessly learn the sounds of Latin American Spanish . I find I need to see the terms in the supplement to really remember them, though.

I didn't know anything about the author but was intrigued by the setting. It turned out this was a great find - interesting and engaging main characters and an intriguing story. Will read the sequel asp and can't wait till the third book is published. Oh, and the reader's very subtle use of accents is excellent.

This is not 3600 sentences but 1800 - in the format 'I did this', 'you did this', 'they did this' etc (that's 3). It hasn't been fully edited so sometimes you hear multiple attempts, which is irritating. It has value in helping aural learners learn strong verbs but lack of the perfect is frustrating.

Uses techniques pioneered by the Foreign Services Institute to model spoken German. Teaches you to automatically form sentences in an authentic German way. Very effective but best supported by other written materials. No book seems to be available, which is irritating. Probably frustrating for a beginner.
