I got bored
Reviewed: 16-04-24
I so hate leaving a bad review. For me this was just drawn out with no proper substance. Just two women having a bitch about one another with the ‘Story’ constantly referring to each woman’s past. I listened to the first few sections up to Edmond’s abduction then Skipped to the final chapter just to get through it.

What an amazing author and a truly entertaining story. So much humour with twists and turns all the way through. Cross is a brilliant detective you can almost hear the cogs turning as he mulls over the evidence in his mind.

Story
When Helena inherits her grandparents' apartment in Athens, she is overwhelmed with memories of the summers she spent there as a child, when Greece was under a brutal military dictatorship. Her remote, cruel grandfather was one of the regime's generals and as she sifts through the dusty rooms, Helena discovers an array of valuable objects and antiquities. How did her grandfather amass such a trove? What human price was paid for them? Helena's desire to find answers about her heritage dovetails with a growing curiosity for archaeology.

Probably the worst Hislop book I have listened to and I have read them all. I really had to battle to finish it and normally I can’t put her books down. It was very Mills and Boon and didn’t have much drama. The narrator was very good and could clearly get her tongue around the Greek language otherwise I would have struggled even more.

Story
If Joe and Vicky had known what relocating to a tiny mountain village in Andalucía would really be like, they might have hesitated. They can have no idea of the culture shock in store for them...no idea they'll become reluctant chicken farmers and own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain...no idea they'll help capture a vulture and be rescued by a mule. Will they stay, or will they return to the relative sanity of England?

A good memoir

I have actually read all of Victoria’s Memoirs they still sit on my kindle as they are very easy reading and thoroughly enjoyable. Brave people to up sticks and move like they did, the characters made me laugh. I decided to download the audible rather than re-read them as it meant I could get on with things around the house.
The narrator is not the best, I felt it is not the best. I suggest if you really want to enjoy these books read them yourself. Sorry Victoria I am a huge fan but the narrator just didn’t do it for me.

Prison Officer Jim Dalton works on the male side of HMP Peterborough. It’s a dangerous place, fuelled by testosterone-driven violence, but he has the prisoners’ respect. When Dalton is transferred to the female side of the prison, his next shift is so easy he can’t believe that the officers over there get paid the same wages. He sleeps well for the first time in years.

But solidarity can’t insure against tragedy, and when life tests the boys to their limits, slowly the four choose different paths as they take the step into adulthood.
