Story
When summoned to a fantastical world and granted powers by a broken System, most freshly minted protagonists would strap on their big-boy boots and get ready for their stats to start climbing. But Fischer isn't like most MCs. In fact, he doesn't want to be a hero at all. Fame? Fortune? Power? He had enough of all that in his old life. Discovering forbidden fishing techniques and petting every cute animal that comes within scritching distance? Now that's a good time.

I am huge He How Fights With Monsters fan and this is in the same vain just without the Chuuni angst and overpowered MC.
The whole pacing and style are completely unique however and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. can wait foe the next one.

THIS! this is exactly what was needed Dan has pulled everything from Rogue Trader to Horus Rising to here. not a beat is missed not a thread dropped. I worried that this might be padded out because of the three book size but I am struggling to see what could have been cut.
0ver 30 years of back story and over a decade and 60 odd books from Black Library and none of it is missed. Saint Ollanius Persson who was created long before Dan came along is here so is Loken and one remaining Custodes... if you don't get these references then you shouldn't be criticising a story you don't understand lol.
The pacing and style have been managed to keep the action going without compromising storyline and through it all Jonathan Keebles narration is spot on. each character is clear and consistent when a character speaks you know who it is before the book states it and even when switching from the heat of battle to infantry eating his pacing and style stay on point.
I can't wait till vol. 3!

I can't comment too much on the story but it did seem to be building quite well. I just couldn't listen to the stupid voices the narrator was making for some of the characters. I don't mind the accents but the 'effects' he was trying to do are awful.
I didn't mind him reading Ahriman but he's out of place in a book like this. shame really.

I have read every book, short story and novella in both the Horus Heresy and Siege of Terra series and this is a fitting beginning to the end if ever I heard one.
Dan drops bombs in every chapter, despite Audible getting loads of the titles wrong, keeping the pace up whilst managing to weave another of very disparate threads into a complete and satisfying story.
As with all the other entries in this series Jonathan Keeble has been consistent, flexible and clever with his delivery.
for those of us that know where the story is going there are plenty of big new reveals and information drops. I can't wait now for part 2......
