This epic novel by master writer James Clavell, loosely based on the Namamugi Incident and Anglo-Satsuma War that took place in the late 1800s, is a richly researched, panoramic view of Japan’s budding relationship with the Western powers, its sweeping societal changes, and the political upheaval that followed.

Unfortunately this the characters sound puerile and ruined the story. I previously read the paper version which I found excellent but this version is terrible.

Story
For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit.

Story
DCI Kenny Murrain sees, hears and feels things that others do not. It’s a gift but also a curse. When he wakes to the phantom sound of screaming, he knows a murder has been committed, but not where or why. Then a woman’s body is found in a Stockport hotel room. It’s a murder that seems both frenzied and carefully planned, the scene expertly cleansed of any evidence.

Terrible delivery

This has to be the worst narrator ever. You never know who is speaking. Mono tonal. Scenes change but the narrator far too often never pauses. A boring drone I’m afraid. I suspect the story is good but it is a pain to listen to.

I accept WS may have have scoped the plot line but narrative is nowhere up to the standard he would have when himself. Very poor writing and I’m afraid that the narration is really off putting. Too much poor ‘acting’.
