I really loved this story, and how the author gives you bits of information so you could work out the mysteries before the characters did. Following Opaline's story was interesting with some unsuspected twists.

I've listened to all of these books in this series, as I like the idea of taking a fairytale and setting it in a specific era. I really like this story as sleeping beauty was my favourite fairytale, but setting it in the 1800s in a cotton mill seemed very fitting and included the struggles women went through.

A good ending to the dread penny series and I like how they have left it open for more books. The only thing thaf could be improved is the narrator, but after several books you do get used to it so don't let that put you off!

I thought the story line was good but I feel like it could have been made better by the way it was read. The narrator has a beautiful dreamy voice, but it seemed like she was whispering the book at times, which I feel didn't portray some of the more important moments in the story. But I would recommend listening to it!

I gave this book a go as it was part of the plus catalogue and I was surprised that it wasn't bad. It's very easy going with an interesting story line and some romance thrown in. I also listened to the 2nd book in this series and enjoyed that too.

A nice story inspired by a classic fairy tale

I liked how the author used the Beauty and the Beast story but changed it so it wasn't the expected ending. If you like fairy tale fantasy, this is definitely worth listening to.
A lot of people have said the narrator ruined the story, but I've listened to her read a few other books and you quickly get used to her pronunciation of words and I think her voice suits the characters well.

This one has been my favourite so far, I got really attached to the characters and the journey they went on.

Loved the story but not the change of narrator

Having listened to the first 3 books in this series from the plus catalogue I decided to buy this one, For some reason they have changed the narrator for this book and I have the say I found it hard knowing which character was speaking and the fact that the usual characters didn't sound the same. This ruined the story for me but I was glad I continued to the end as the story line was great and revealed an unexpected twist at the end! Can't wait for the next book!

Story
Elizabeth Black is the headmistress of a girls' school in 1830s Victorian London. She is also a well-respected author of stories written both for and about the upper-class ladies of Victorian society. But by night, she writes very different kinds of stories - the Penny Dreadfuls that are all the rage among the working-class men. Under the pseudonym Charles King, Elizabeth has written about dashing heroes fighting supernatural threats, intelligent detectives solving grisly murders, and dangerous outlaws romancing helpless women.

Something different but with a touch of romance
Reviewed: 14-07-23
As this book was part of the Audible catalogue I thought I would give it a go and it turned out to surprise me. I really got invested in the characters and went on to read the others in the series. If you like novels that are set in a different era then I would recommend these. I also liked how you got 3 stories in one, as there are stories written by the characters each time, which link to the main story. I found the narration wasn't always great, her accents were okay but when she read in her normal accent, some words were pronounced weirdly. But once you get over that it's definitely a series to get stuck into!
