Story
For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit.

High-level Harry
Reviewed: 24-11-22
I listened to this having seen the tv series already, so great to have the continuation of Welliver’s voice, although it jarred a bit with the difference in time period. Plot twists enjoyably different. My only criticism is with the dialogue narration, as Welliver does not give the characters distinct voices, occasionally leading to confusion over who is speaking.

Story
After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts, until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Ever since the land has belonged to man and the oceans have remained an uncrossable hell, leaving the continent of Lok isolated. It was prophesized that someday the demons would return, and only the descendants of Ramrowan would be able to defeat them. They became the first kings, and all men served those who were their only hope for survival.

The world built here is intriguing and well achieved, the plotting less so. The narrator does a good job although occasionally he errs in distinguishing the different character accents and tones in dialogues.

Shortlisted for the Audiobook Download of the Year, 2007.
Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Disappointing

The book did not live up to its venerable reputation, with a rather turgid plot that dragged along to its inevitable conclusion. The main narrator was good but was spoiled, rather than enhanced, by the dialogue voiced by other actors.

A beautiful tale, masterly narrated

This is a fine tale, combining wandering through England with wandering through a troubled personal history. The masterly narration brings out the tragedy, pathos and even the humour of a fragile, elderly hero and his unlikely adventure.

Springtime in Styria. And that means war. There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king.

An unfinishable tale
Reviewed: 01-01-21
This is a poor story, unengaging, lazy and at times execrable, particularly the sex scenes. I only got as far as I did in the audiobook thanks to the excellent performance by the narrator, but even that couldn’t save the story.

Thoughtful thriller
Reviewed: 20-06-20
A hugely entertaining and emotive thriller. It is written from multiple points of view but this does not detract at all from the excitement or pace, and gives an enhanced psychological picture of many of the protagonists. The only negative is that the ending is perhaps slightly unrealistic.
The narration is professional but there is a lack of distinction between characters’ voices, making dialogue identification difficult at times.

An interesting premise and at times beautiful writing, but the plot is predictable and unabsorbing. The fantasy aspects are barely examined as the tale merely becomes a love story with its foreseeable happy ending.

Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever, and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.

Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."
