Story
We often think of Britain springing from nowhere with the arrival of the Romans. But in Ancestors, pre-eminent archaeologist, broadcaster and academic Professor Alice Roberts explores what we can learn about the very earliest Britons – from their burial sites. Although we have very little evidence of what life was like in prehistorical times, here their stories are told through the bones and funerary offerings left behind, preserved in the ground for thousands of years.

Woke bingo
Reviewed: 18-08-23
Would you believe that a book about prehistoric burrials could find a way to shoe horn every single woke issue in to the narrative, from colonialism to transgender ideology (we had a one hour monologue on this alone), to climate change, to the patriarchy. And oh the patriarchy, Roberts' favourite topic. It almost feels like this book was written as a excuse to rant about dead Christian men for their inferior ideas and beliefs, this was the main theme of the book.
Indeed, Roberts' takes great pleasure in constantly denigrating Christianity, and even though I'm not a Christian myself, I found the constant attacks very uncomfortable. I wonder if she'd dare to call Islam a "Ponzi scheme" as she did Christianity.
However the archeological in between the woke lessons were certainly interesting and well written.

Story
Gary Thorn goes for a pint with a work acquaintance called Brendan. When Brendan leaves early, Gary meets a girl in the pub. He doesn’t catch her name, but falls for her anyway. When she suddenly disappears without saying goodbye, all Gary has to remember her by is the book she was reading: The Satsuma Complex. But when Brendan goes missing, Gary needs to track down the girl he now calls Satsuma to get some answers. And so begins Gary’s quest, through the estates and pie shops of South London, to finally bring some love and excitement into his unremarkable life.

Had me in tears of laughter

I must leave a review as this title has received much criticism for the "awkward" and "wooden" narration from Bob. However this is part of this comedic delivery, and is part of what makes it so funny...for those who have a good sense of humour. Charming story too.
