A number of Samsung’s flagship devices on Sprint are receiving updates today according to reports. While Sprint says the OTA updates will be rolled out over the next few days, users will be able to check for updates manually by heading over to Settings > About Phone. Firstly, coming to the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge, the two devices are only receiving minor bug-fix updates according to Sprint. The company hasn’t listed any detailed changelog, but simply says the updates will come with “Various Bug Fixes and Enhancements”. While the Galaxy S6 will move from software version G920PVPU2B0F7 to version G920PVPU2BOFE after the update, the Galaxy S6 Edge will move up to version G925PVPU2BOFE from version G925PVPU2B0F7. Both the devices are already on Android 5.1 Lollipop, after having been updated to the latest flavor of Android late last month. They were launched with Android 5.0 Lollipop back in April this year.
As for the Galaxy Note Edge, the smartphone is receiving an Android version update, and will be moving up to Android 5.1 Lollipop, after having received the Android 5.0 update back in April. The device was originally launched with Android 4.4 KitKat last year. After the update, the Galaxy Note Edge will go from software version number N915PVPU3BOF6 to version N915PVPU4COFE. As is the case with the other two updates, Sprint hasn’t bothered to publish any detailed changelog in this case either, even though this is a major update. So while one cannot be entirely certain of what exactly Samsung and Sprint are bringing to the table with the new Android 5.1 firmware, going by the stock AOSP features, the version should bring along better Wi-Fi and Bluetooth management, HD voice integration and device protection.
With the Android 5.1 update rolling out to three of the flagship devices from Samsung including the Galaxy Note Edge, users of the Galaxy Note 4 on Sprint may be feeling a bit left-out right now. The device is still running on Android 5.0 Lollipop, without any sign of the much-awaited Android 5.1 update. With the recent update to the other three flagship devices though, the Android 5.1 update for the Galaxy Note 4 should be just round the corner; but then again, Android version updates have always been a thorny issue between carriers and their subscribers, so users will do well not to hold their breath in anticipation.
