Sony has been working hard to bring the latest version of Android to all of the company’s flagship devices, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update has already been confirmed to launch later this month to the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3. However, Sony didn’t mention when the update was going to be released for the different variants that exist for the Xperia Z3 series; fortunately Sony didn’t take that much time before actually releasing the update for a couple of the different versions. The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update just came out for the Xperia Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact and it brings some needed improvements to both devices but nothing that surprising after coming from Android 5.0.2.
Android 5.1.1 Lollipop brings a lot of welcome enhancements to the Xperia Z series, but most are under the hood improvements, only two significant user-facing changes have been found as of yet. These changes include more options when connecting to either WiFi or Bluetooth from the Quick Settings menu, and a number of new icons in the settings menu along with several new changes. Unfortunately, the newly released Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update hasn’t been thoroughly analyzed for more changes to be found. The official Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Sony changelog didn’t mention anything different from what has been already found on the previous Lollipop build, but as time passes more minor changes will likely be discovered. Currently, the update for the Xperia Z3 Compact (D5803) is only available via OTA in the Baltics and the Middle East, and for the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact (SGP612) only in Italy. Fortunately, users can download both updates and manually install it.
Sony is one of the few companies that has shown a significant interest in flagships that have already been out for quite some time, as most OEMs prefer to incentivize their customers to purchase one of the company’s newer devices. But it is not like Sony has another choice, as the company has faced a lot of struggles lately with their smartphone market. Right now Sony is taking the right approach to the major decline in smartphone sales it has been suffering from. The company is now focused in regaining the loyal customers it once had, and it appears that the company will be doing that by releasing the latest version of Android as quickly as possible.
