The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 may not be the best tablet out there from Samsung, we’d argue that the new Galaxy Tab S2 is. But it’s still a fine tablet, and today it got even better. As Samsung and AT&T have started to rollout Android 5.1 Lollipop to the LTE variant that’s available on AT&T. This update brings quite a few new features to the tablet.
The changelog notes that this update brings Quick Settings updates for the WiFi and Bluetooth management. So you are able to switch WiFi and Bluetooth devices without jumping into settings. There are also additional animations added in, from the 5.0 update. We also have some new and improved notifications and screen pinning. Screen pinning is pretty sweet. If you give your phone to someone to check something out, you can pin an app to the screen so they can’t do anything else. Those nosey people. AT&T also notes that there are update security software and improved memory management.
In a surprise move, AT&T and Samsung are removing some pre-installed apps. These include WatchON, Beats Music and Famigo. While Beats Music is now Apple Music and is coming later this summer. And WatchON has been replaced by Peel Smart Remote in recent Samsung devices, it’s interesting to see Famigo go away as well.
The update is available now, and comes in as build LMY47X.T537AUCU1BOG5. It also weighs in at over 900MB in size. So you’ll want to be sure you’re on some decent WiFi before attempting to download the update, as it’s going to take a while, naturally. You can head over to Settings > About Tablet > System Updates and tap on Check for Updates to attempt to pull down your update. The update is likely available on Kies as well, if you can’t pull the update over the air for some reason. The update is 926MB in size because it’s coming from Android 4.4.2 to Android 5.1.1, so as you can expect there’s a lot of changes involved in this OTA update. Things will look a bit different too, coming from KitKat and going to Lollipop on the Galaxy Tab 4.
