Slowly but surely, Lollipop is making its way across the sea of devices which carry the Android operating system. Some obviously receive these updates to the software slower than others, and for Samsung and AT&T, this refers to the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 as it’s just reportedly started getting a software update over-the-air that includes Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Alongside the update to Lollipop which should bring about a handful of new features to the tablet, like the new material design inspired interface seen on other current Samsung devices such as the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy Note 4 as well as the Galaxy S5. Users should also notice some bug fixes and performance improvements as these things are usually standard with any software update.
The changelog lists the update as being effective as of June 16th, which of course is today, so keep in mind that some users may end up seeing the update today but that doesn’t mean all users will end up with on their tablet before the day’s end. If you own one of these tablets you can also check for the update of the software manually by going into settings/about tablet and tapping the button to refresh. It’s also worth noting that AT&T states a WiFi connection will be required for you to see and download the update as well, so being connected to the cellular network only likely won’t cause the update to show up on your device.
For a more specific albeit brief breakdown of what changes users will see, the AT&T changelog lists a change to the quick settings menu, additional animations which is to be expected since this was a huge point of reference for Lollipop and material design, improved notifications and the tablet will now support device protection. Updates don’t generally tend to affect data on the device or the pre-configured device settings, but interestingly enough AT&T recommends that users back up any information just in case, which probably isn’t a bad idea. When the update comes through, it’s recorded as a massive 1.1GB update file, so make sure you have enough space for it to be stored, and that you have a good ten minutes or more for things to download and install.
