It’s the beginning of another month, which means it’s time for another Android Distribution Numbers update. Over a 14-day period, which ended on March 4th, the Android team tracked the devices that used the Play Store, and got the following numbers for the versions of Android that everyone is on. Some of these numbers are actually still quite surprising. Probably the most surprising is that 7.6% of devices are still running Froyo…say what? But Gingerbread is still the majority with 44% , followed by Ice Cream Sandwich at 28.6% and then Jelly Bean at 16.5%.
Android 4.2 has gone up to 1.6% which is basically all the Nexus devices, and those running custom ROMs that have Android 4.2 like CyanogenMod and AOKP. Which tells you that there aren’t a whole lot of Nexus devices sold compared to the rest of the Android family. Even the Galaxy S3, and Note 2 which have sold like crazy are no match for those with Gingerbread still.
Although we are starting to see Gingerbread numbers decrease, which they decreased by about 1.4% which means two things. One people are upgrading to a newer phone, two manufacturers are FINALLY upgrading their devices to Android 4.x. You can check out last month’s numbers below.
We just can’t seem to get rid of Gingerbread now can we? Hopefully after Google I/O we’ll start seeing it drop a lot faster. It’s also kinda amazing how there are still people running Donut, and Eclair which have been outdated for so long. We need to see what we can do to get these folks upgraded to Jelly Bean.
Now of course, you’ll be seeing a lot of posts from Apple blogs about the F word. And that word is fragmentation. Yeah sure Android has fragmentation, but what platform doesn’t? Even Apple has fragmentation with their older iPhones.
