We have the Amazon EERO system in our vacation home while having a TP-Link Deco M5 system at our home. We use the iPhone apps for each of them to administer.
While the Deco-5 system is more flexible for solving certain problems, it also comes with a far more complicated app for administration. Every time I use it I have to struggle through the menus to find what I'm looking for. The app was obviously designed by engineers with little thought given to usability.
The Amazon EERO app, on the other hand, is quite simple and more intuitive. Y u can pick it up after not using it for months and quickly make whatever change you want to make.
Now having said all that, the main reason you might need the apps down the road is to add another EERO or Deco M5 device to the respective network, to fix a weak spot in your WIFI coverage. Both systems allow this.
