7/24 Update - Bought this rangefinder in November 2021. At the end of last season in 2023, the Callaway failed to work consistently. In the 2024 season, it got worse and works 1 out of 5 or 6 tries. Of course, it's out of warranty and it's cheaper to buy a new one than get this one fixed.
Yes, I tried 3 NEW brand name batteries from different manufacturers, I gently cleaned the battery contacts, and the unit has been stored in my bag indoors and it never got wet or even damp.
Do I stick with Callaway and have it die again in short order or go to another brand? Not sure yet.
Original review:
My old Leopold rangefinder from 2014 finally died. My wife gave me this Callaway model for Father’s Day - same one I got her for Mother’s Day!
It’s a really nice ranger finder but I simply don’t like the bulky zipper case. I don’t trust the elastic band on the case to hold the case shut when unzipped.
I far prefer the magnetic closure on my old 2014 Leupold rangefinder.
Pro: -simplicity of the controls, locks on the target quickly -clear visual field, easy focus adjust -solid vibration feedback -accurate based on comparisons with other golf buddies on the course with different range finders -solid value for a very well made range finder - slope can be turned off for use in tournaments
Con: -I like to wear my range finder on my belt - the hard case is bulky and kind of goofy with the elastic band closure for access when the case is unzipped -little room in the case for a spare battery - I keep a spare battery in my bag now, not in the case. -plastic carabiner is junk, a quick way to lose the range finder. I replaced it with a stainless carabiner (see photo) -came with a generic battery - goes out of focus frequently
The case issues are more of a personal choice, and they might not bother other folks. I wore my circa 2014 Leupold on my belt and it was better designed for my use with a zipper pocket on the bottom under the main case and a solid locking magnetic flip closure.
Even after 8+ years of use, the Leupold case was better designed and more compact than this Callaway version.
But the Leupold cost $400 in 2014 and I think this new Callaway model is easier to read and quicker to respond for less than half the price. (But it died 2 years after purchase!) Hope that helps!
3.0 out of 5 stars
2 years out and it works when it feels like it and its out of warranty
