vegan, 75% of the experience of Oreos, no glucose spike
4 Stars
vegan, 75% of the experience of Oreos, no glucose spike
The picture on the Amazon product page at this writing has an ingredient list that explicitly lists milk products, however that is the old recipe. The current recipe (May 14, 2024), which you can find on the Rip Van website, does *not* include milk products. The label on the box I received warns that it "may" contain milk because the equipment they use is probably also used to produce milk-containing products. So if you have a lethal dairy allergy or feel very strongly about only supporting 100% vegan companies (not sure how one could determine that), then you might want to avoid it. I'm a pretty militant vegan, but the way I see the world, there are functional limits. (Did you know there is gelatin in your tires? The list goes on...)That said...I love Oreos, but I'm very conscious about blood glucose because I wore a CGM for a month once and it completely changed my relationship to carbs. It's like the first time you run your car out of oil and learn the consequences of what you've done to a very expensive piece of machinery. You'll *never* do that again. Similarly, the idea of pegging my blood sugar is now an anathema to me. I'm not diabetic (yet) but I have to live in this body for the rest of my life, and I want it in the best shape possible. Alas, I have a major sweet tooth, so I have a hobby of sorts, where I'm constantly trying to substitute xylitol, erythritol, Stevia, or allulose into various recipes. I also occasionally buy products like these cookies just to assess the state of the art.Like I said in the title, I would call these about 75% of the experience of Oreos. I enjoyed eating them, but I have to admit they taste a little "off" and there is a persistent aftertaste, probably from the Stevia. (In my experience, allulose has no aftertaste.) So if you are a person whose values taste over nutrition or general health, or would prefer to eat one Oreo (who can do that??) instead of four Leos, I guarantee you'll regret buying them. However, if, like me, you want to live a long and healthy life and still have the "idea" of Oreos from time to time, I think you'll appreciate them. The nutrition facts say these have about 1/4 the "sugar" of Oreos; that number is probably derived from the corn and sugar cane fiber, though allulose is also technically a "rare sugar" so perhaps that is included in the total? In fact, it might account for most of it. Of course, neither allulose nor Stevia raise blood sugar, and allulose also reduces the postprandial glucose spike from standard carbs, so you have to take that into account. Unfortunately, I'm not currently using a CGM, so I can't make an empirical determination.Subjectively: I normally don't become aware that I'm cramming true Oreos down my throat until I eat at least eight of them because that's the point where my stomach starts to get a little upset. Conversely, I ate one package of Leos (four cookies, slightly smaller than Oreos) and I don't want any more. I'm guessing that is probably due to a combination of the lack of an addictive response and the aftertaste.I don't yet know whether I will buy these again. We'll see how I feel when the box is gone. My rating isn't just about taste, but includes function. I gave four stars because I believe there is still room for improvement. I'll also be watching to see how they modulate the recipe going forward. They're going to be hard pressed to find something as sweet as Stevia for the filling, but that's probably the only way to get rid of the aftertaste. Maybe they could replace the Stevia with the less sweet allulose and add more fat to compensate, i.e. make them "double stuff." Anyway, I'm sure they're aware of the deficiencies and are working on ways to make them better. It's not an easy problem to solve.

My husband and I both had VSG surgery about a year ago and have been on a weight loss journey. These cookies have been a great alternative for keeping our sugar low. They are tasty and you definitely get the satisfaction of a “sandwich” type cookie. We have these on a monthly subscription lol. The vanilla is so much better than the chocolate flavor in our opinion. If you are looking for an alternative to traditional high sugar cookies I’d definitely recommend giving these a shot.

You will not be disappointed if you give them a try. I can’t wait to get my current order! Hoping one day soon they’ll offer them in different flavors just like Oreo has many flavors.

Let me start by saying these taste great, both flavors, but chocolate tastes as good as the one with all the sugar we all know and love.

Ok, so I am that guy who monitors everything they consume using a CSG (glucose monitor) because I have type 2 diabetes, even though it is not weight-related. Last night, after I ate the whole pack of four, I noticed my blood sugar spiked above my normal range, please remember everyone is different. I quickly read the label, and it is well labeled that the serving size is ONLY TWO, not the whole pack. The point is that if you eat the whole pack you are eating 6 grams of sugar and 26 grams of carbs once you subtract the dietary fiber for a total of 220 calories. These are great alternatives, but in my case, I could only get away with eating two cookies versus the whole pack if I wanted to keep my blood sugar level in the recommended glucose range.

Again, it's delicious tasting. Just be aware if you are type 2 before you take down the whole pack, just be aware if you have type 1 or 2 diabetes. Everyone is different but this is my personal experience, and wanted to share it. I hope this helps someone else. Enjoy this great-tasting snack.

These are pretty good versions of Oreos. The cooke is a bit more crumbly so you'll get more crumbs, and the aftertaste was initially offputting but after the 2nd bag I didn't mind. I think I went into it really expecting an Oreo taste and needed to be ready for something that is similar but not the same.

All the Rip Van stuff is really expensive given the amount you get, but it's also fresh, tastes good, and is healthier and vegan so it's not so bad.

The cookies come in four to a pack and the serving size is for two cookies so be mindful of that.

I'd definitely order these again. It's like 90% of what an Oreo tastes like and that's fine by me.

These taste great, I won't deny that. But the value of what you get for the price you pay pretty much negates it.

First, they're not sugar free. I know that's in the description, but for how little you get vs how much you pay, the little bit of sugar you do get isn't worth it. Secondly, each box only contains 16 cookies and they're really small ones at that.

All in all, I'll never buy these again so long as they continue to cost what they currently do. It just isn't worth it.

These are quite simply - AH-MAZE-ING. Catalina Crunch claimed to be started by a Type 1 Diabetic although the products have a severe blood sugar impact. These however, do not. Flavor is outstanding, consistency fantastic and no regret with no lasting issues like high blood sugars the next day. I tested these starting with a blood sugar of 55, ate one package (4 cookies), an hour later blood sugar was 138. Took 1 unit of fast-acting and an hour later, blood sugar was 100. Also tried eating these late at night and the next day, no issues. Love the fact that they use Allulose as the sweetener although the listing shows "vegan" but the ingredients include milk protein. However, so worth it, price is a little high and wish they could be found at various grocery stores. These are really really good! Well done!

Update 4/2024:
These appear to be a new formulation and they are absolutely terrible. Higher calories, less fiber, more carbs and smaller. Why ruin a perfectly wonderful product? It appears you were trying to make these vegan which is fine however, these the wheat flour now is first as the ingredient. There is milk protein in the previous 100 calorie version however, the texture and flavor were 1000x better. The previous version was perfect especially for us type 1 Diabetics that had zero impact. This new version is so bad, I don't want to eat anymore to test it out. Why? You also changed the packaging from the easy open rear to now tearing open the top to reveal these strange candy bar like packages. These used to be perfect - if you want to make them vegan, there are better ways to do that without sacrificing the flavor, calories and texture. The 100 calorie version had 13g carbs with 6g fiber while this new 110 calorie version has 16g carbs and 3g fiber.

I have been on the keto diet for a few months now and have been craving sweets. I found these cookies on amazon and decided to give them a try. They are a little softer than regular oreos so it might be somewhat strange at first to bite into. Once you get over that, the flavor is fairly close and fills the craving you might have. Good portions and make a great keto sweet snack.
