There are many good in-depth reviews posted here on practically every aspect of the new Samsung Galaxy S22 so I won't attempt to improve on ground already covered. I'll just tell you about some of the features that sold me on the new S22 phone. I am coming to the S22 (6.1 inch) from an S20 FE (6.4 inch), a very likeable phone but heavy and a handful to hold. In this regard, I find the smaller size of the S22 and its lighter weight to be much more comfortable in my hand and easier to slip in my pocket. As expected, the S22's screen is vibrant, sharp, and colorful. The phone's cameras take excellent photos. The phone's under-the-screen fingerprint sensor is quick and responsive. I found the initial setup of the S22 to be easy using Samsung's onboard Switch software to copy the settings and data from my older S20 FE. Checking for updates I found an update to Android 13 and UI 5 waiting for me. Awesome! My only real worry about the S22 were the many reviews reporting poorer than expected battery life. Alarmingly, I also found the S22's DAY ONE battery life to be pretty disappointing. But before getting all upset over it, I got busy digging into the phone's many menu options and found a number of adjustments to improve the phone's battery life. In addition, I discovered that Samsung has incorporated a new AI battery learning feature into the S22 lineup of phones to help improve battery life based on how an individual uses their phone. Cool. The good news, after a fresh charge and after making power saving adjustments, my phone's battery life has improved dramatically. Hooray! Currently, I'm experimenting with leaving my S22 on power saver mode to see what impact it has on its functionality vs battery life. So far, I haven't noticed any performance downside by leaving the phone on power save but it has yielded a huge improvement in battery life. In fact, with light usage, texting and checking the news and weather, the phone's battery monitor reports my battery at 64% after 2 DAYS of service and is predicting I still have 1 DAY and 14 HOURS left. < I do turn my phone off for about 6 hours overnight. > Fantastic! Overall, the S22 checked all the boxes for the features I was looking for in a new phone; smaller size, making it easier to handle, vivid and responsive screen, improved cameras, strong flagship build quality and good looks, extremely good battery life <after adjustments>, and it came with an immediate upgrade to Android 13. What's not to like? The people I don't recommend this phone to would be those who stream a lot of movies or who like to play graphics intensive games or just want a GIANT phone. Those folks would be better served by the larger and more expensive S22 + or Ultra phones that come equipped with higher capacity batteries. That's all folks!

So I switched to the s22 from a an older and larger phone the oneplus 7pro. Although I really loved my 7pro I instantly switched to the s22 and loved its size and UI. Before the s22 I tried the Pixel 6pro but it was too big and got way too hot.

I recommend the s22 for anyone who wants a small phone that packs a punch. The only downsides are battery life but I'm willing to make that trade off for a more compact phone.

I have been using this phone for a few months now so I thought I'd update it:
It IS a very nicely built phone and the antenna and modem are great. I get mmWave and have gotten up to 4 Gigabits of speed! C-band is really spotty in my area but I get that too. My biggest issue now is that the phone gets pretty hot when I use a wireless charger or if I'm using it outside. Granted, I am in a hot climate but my old phone didn't get this warm if it's just a little sunny. In the car, I have to have the AC on it.

The battery life...well , yeah it does stink but it will get you through your day. I think part of the issue is that I'm with Verizon and they don't have standalone 5G so often, I'm connected to two different bands. Hopefully that will get better in time.

Original Review:
I'm a Google guy and have mostly owned Nexus and Pixel phones. I've never been a Samsung fan because of all the extra junkware they add to the phones and how they create duplicate versions of perfectly good Android apps instead of just using the native apps. I've always loved Samsung's hardware but the software has been why I've chosen Google's phones.

In the past, google's phones all used the Snapdragon chips and while they may have not been the fastest or slickest looking phones, more than held their own on hardware and blew Samsung out of the water with their software. That's why I was very excited to wait for the Pixel 6 because the Pixel 6 was going to be my 5G phone. Then I found out that I couldn't get an unlocked Pixel 6 that had mmWave 5G and I'd have to get the Pro. Fine, even though it would be a giant phone. But then all the problems of the P6 came to light - signal issues, disconnecting, finger print reader, and bug after bug with delayed updates.

That's when I decided to wait for the S22. I've only had it for a short time but I am very impressed by how great the phone feels. The Pixel6 just looked boxy and cheap. The S22 looks very polished. The modem /antenna on it also are very strong. Even in spots where my old phone had trouble, the s22 gives me an extra bar and makes a huge difference. The 5G modem is also great. I've been able to connect to mmWave, but I don't think C band is deployed in my area yet. Battery life is not great but for a phone this size, it's more than adequate and will last you a whole work day if by chance you live in an area without any outlets and haven't yet figured out that they sell these portable battery packs. Really, try them, it's an amazing invention.

The software...well, it's still a Samsung so there is lots of bloatware that you can't delete. I wish it wasn't so, but it is. It took me about 3 hours to de-Samsung the phone - put in google's autofill/password manager, put in google calendar, etc. I will say that Samsung's apps do sync up really well with Google, but I still prefer google's native apps.

If there is one complaint I have, it would be the finger print reader. Why oh why do they have it on screen? I have a tempered glass protector so perhaps that's causing it to not register half the time, but then they should expect people to put a screen protector on.

Overall, don't listen to the nay-sayers who haven't even bought the phone going off on their soap box about a headphone jack and SD card reader. Those days are gone as the floppy drives are. This is a great phone if you can put up with Samsung's software. Maybe one day I'll go back to the pixel, but overall, I feel good about this purchase.

*update*
After a month of use, I love this phone and have gotten it to be almost like a Pixel. The modem/antenna on this phone are amazing. I pick up Verizon mmWave 5G from a moving vehicle where they have antennas in the streets. Low/mid-band 5G and LTE get slightly better connections than my old phone too. This phone has great hardware.

Some things I did to make this more of a google type of phone:
Replaced the Samsung keyboard with Google's Gboard ...bigger buttons, better placement.
Replaced contacts, calendar, and dialer to google
Replaced auto-complete passwords to google

I wish I could delete some of the Samsung versions but when they are not the default, they just sit and don't mess things up.

I also moved up from a Galaxy S9 and this phone is just fine; do not fear the negative reviews. The size is just right for a pocket. The battery life is excellent for a moderate user, maybe not for a heavy user. I charge every second night, typically. Even though Samsung eliminate the SD card, this phone has plenty of memory and it is FAST. All of these phone are more expensive than justifiable, but at least the S22 is at the low end for new phones. This receives 5G when it is available...part of my location. It has features I have yet to learn and I do not expect it to be obsolete for some time.
