Great alternative!
5 Stars
Great alternative!
It didn’t smell, it just smells EXACTLY like Vienna sausage! Made tacos for the family and they didnt notice & I still won’t tell them (shhh). Season it hoe you normally would and it tastes like the real deal. Especially love the absence of soy.

Got like 15 on sale (below $4) and it was very nice. Grilled for 4 min per side (griddle), very good flavor, add blue cheese for topping and it makes a very nice burger.

Yes. this product seems to effect some small % of people (including myself). If you are thinking of trying this don't worry about the bad reviews.. just try it for yourself.

(my review) Oh my god.. when i first smelled it it was very unpleasant. It smelled like I just opened a can of cat/spam food. I couldn't get over that smell.. it stayed with me as I cooked... but I am a brave guy. I eat anything and just don't get grossed out.

First day:
Cook a burger patty. Everytime I took a bite an extremely unpleasant odor enters first and let me tell you... I wish I can explain it. It's just really off putting. Again, I am a brave guy.. don't care. I continue eating 1 very unpleasant bite after another.
Ok. So I am done with the burger... now I have this very unpleasant aftertaste in my mouth the entire night. It was awful... really, really awful (my constant burping did not help.)

Day 2: I am going to do this again differently. Open the bag (that awful weird smell hits me first) Oh my god. it is so awful because it is nothing like I have experienced before... ok. So this time I have indian spices... My goal is to kill the aftertaste. I added enough curry to kill an indian bengal tiger.... sadly, that aftertaste is right there.

No day 3. I threw it in the garbage. I am not that brave.

In conclusion. I think this effects a small % (from the reviews it seems like around 5%) of people that eat it experience the cat/dog food sensation. The rest of the population don't seem affected.
it's a shame because the texture was in my opinion perfect and I am leaving a 5 star review because I wish them all the best.
Don't listen to anyone.. try it for yourself.

I definitely will do an update next time I reorder because I intend to soon. Today I made two very thick burgers with it and it was absolutely delicious, exactly like the real beef burgers! Texture and flavor was on cue, I'm still shocked!! Now I was a little cautious due to other reviews mentioning that bad smell, because I'm one of those people who have a weird sense of smell and certain scents affect me tremendously, but I didn't get any off putting experience from the product whatsoever. This makes me wonder if these poor souls actually got a bad batch, even that one guy that apparently bought two packs with the same smelly issues.
I'll update my review in about a week along with pictures because it's a shame these people missed out on such a well formulated vegan product that's even SOY FREE!! There're many terrible vegetarian options out there that only true meat haters would eat and the rest of us just tolerate because either we have no choice due to allergies etc but this "meat" is not just okay, it's so delicious!
UPDATE: Couple months later and every week I buy at least 1 package, sometimes I get a couple of the burger shaped packages and I am still having a great experience. The burger shaped sizes are easy to keep stocked frozen. Just plop them on a hot pan straight from the freezer and before you know it, it's done! I cook mine with a touch of balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper.

Great substitute in foods like shepherds pie. No aftertaste. Price is still way too high.

Perfect ground meat substitute. Soups, chili’s, lasagna, burgers… your name it. Cooks in no time and the texture is very much like the real thing. This pack is the equivalent to roughly 4 burgers if you purchase the packs of two. Very little preparation is required; season it a bit and throw them in the oven, on the grill or in a pan. Finishes in minutes with no animals harmed.

I've been trying to reduce animal protein (especially beef) in my diet, as recommended by my nephrologist (kidney doctor - due to history of kodney stones), and have been trying every plant-based meat substitute out there. Many are great and some you could totally pass off as meat if prepared properly, so I'm not against meat substitutes by any stretch.

This came on sale and I bought it and made tacos out of it. So, any unusal flavors should be well drowned out by tons of salt, spices, and toppings, even if it has an odd aftertaste, I thought. Well, with other meat substitutes I've had, this is generally true. And I thought, "hey cool - mostly pea protein. Probably great!" However, this had what I can only describe as a vaguely soap-like/chemical aftertaste (no, I am not one of those people with that reaction to cilantro). I was surprised, given the amount of other stuff that should have overpowered it, but, nevertheless, there it was. I gave it another shot the next day, with leftovers, and added cheese (real dairy), fresh scallions, and fresh jalapeños, and it still didn't kill the aftertaste.

To be fair, it was a very mild aftertaste, and it wasn't bad enough to make me get rid of it, but it definitely put this below other competing products, for me.

No, the flavor was not from contamination on the pan, as I have a habit of rinsing pans before using them, because of dust and such, so the pan was not soapy.

I'm going to give it another try, on the off chance it was just the particular batch I got. But, for now, I can only give this product 3 stars, overall, with flavor being the main thing dragging it down.

I'll adjust my review if the second attempt is any better.
