Easy setup and controls all your equipment but has room for improvement
I bought this as an alternative solution to control my TV and sound system with Alexa. My main setup in my room consists of an LG 70" 4k TV, nvidia shield, xbox one, LG soundbar, and a Nintendo switch. Before the fire TV cube, I had no way to control all with Alexa until I bought a logitech harmony hub. When I found out about this, I thought I'd try it. My setup in my living room is simple. Samsung 55" 3D TV, Samsung sound towers and the fire TV cube. Setting this up was easy! It detected both TV and speakers right away. After all software updates and apps that I wanted and had to sign in to, I had this thing running in half an hour and didn't even need a manual. What I observed (good or bad):1. It is smaller than I expected. Not a big deal but I thought it was bigger.2. If using the remote as your mic, you have to press and hold while speaking. Unlike with my nvidia shield, I can talk with just a single press then Google assistant can listen (similar to a phone). It's just something you need to remember if you're used to a press and release to talk kind of person.3. When I ask Alexa to turn on the tv, TV, on on both TV and speakers. This is good when I actually want both to be turned on at the same time. Maybe it takes a few tweaks to customize but it works great for now since I only have a simple setup for this.4. I hear Alexa through my speakers when turned on. This was unexpected. Like I said, I may need to do some tweaks to have Alexa just be heard on the cube. Not sure about this yet.5. The blue light appears on the top of the TV screen when you speak to Alexa which is kind of cool. It's like your TV is a giant echo show.6. It pauses whatever is on the TV if you call on Alexa. I didn't like this since it ruins the show when it pauses. My Alexa in my room does not interrupt my watching while I ask for something else.7. The speakers on the cube itself is not as good as my other echo products. Honestly, my echo dot sounds better.8. You have to review and get used to new commands to completely be hands free on this. Sure, it takes longer to get things done then just using the remote to scroll through things but it's a nice feature to not even hold a remote. Is just not there yet in my opinion.9. Picture quality is very good. I may need to plug this on my 4k TV to see the quality on 4k content but on my 1080p, it looks great.10. I have not tested it but I don't think I'd play games on this. It's the reason why I ditched my fire TV stick for the nvidia shield. Don't think this has the hardware to have a decent playing experience. Maybe for simple games..Overall, this fire TV cube is a good buy. It is like having an echo dot and a logitech harmony hub in one. I'd say if this was priced $80, it's a steal but at $130, I feel it's a bit pricey since it's not perfect.

Im a newbie in the world of AI and automation space. So far, I am very impressed with the quality, capabilities and functionalities of CUBE and because if this I ended up buying 3 more devices for my household. What's even more intriguing is now that I am referring to Alexa as "she/her", rather than "it"; whereas in the past, I corrected people for saying same thing. Yup... hypocrisy at its best...lol.

Anyways, here is a quick summary of my experience with Fire Cube/Echos so far.

Strengths:

- Easy setup using Alexa companion app on Android OS. Allows access to polethora of commands, functions, smart skills to manage compatible gadgets. My favorites - creating Rountines to control multiple devices. For example "Alexa, good morning" which turns on the TV, lights in specific areas, adjusts temperature and reads out appts on my google calendar. Also, I have found "recent activity" tab is very helpful as it displays all commands heard/executed especially if Alexa is having a hard time understanding, i.e. due to misspelled input during setup (dinning vs. dining)
- From what I have experienced, Cube's (voice recognition) Range up to 9 ft with background noise. Up to 15 ft without. Echo dots are little bit better since they are placed away from my sound system.
- Very impressed with the natural language adoption & recognition especially the voice commands without pause. Works best if you disable "start of request" sound under sound settings which means it doesn't make a sound upon activation (once command "Alexa" is given by the user) so you can simply say Alexa turn on the lights vs. Alexa, wait for the wake up sound, and then proceed to say the command.
- Home Automation & Seamless Integration: Works great with Samsung SmartThings Hub, to control - Samsung QF7 smart TV with one connect box and access to vast amounts of entertainment devices and (subscription) providers (netflix, Hulu, spotify etc), Sengled smart bulbs (on/off, dim), Nest, Schlage connect century touchscreen deadbolt lock, myCadillac to start, stop, lock, unlock vehicle (On-Star subscription required) and Arlo security cam (video appears on TV).
- Learning & improvements: Initially when I setup the lights automation, I had noticed a significant lag between commands and execution (turning lights on/off) but within few days that issue went away. Clearly the functionality improves as the device learns thru constant use. Same goes for voice recognition. Initially, Alexa had a hard time recognizing my wife's voice commands however that ended up resolving itself within couple of days.

Opportunities:

- Limited interaction using voice commands with the Xfinity X1 cable box, Samsung (smart TV) one connect box and Polk Magnifi mini sound system. Im able to switch input by saying "switch to cable" however it doesn't trigger wake up if x1 cable box is in sleep mode. Even after I manually turn on the cable box, it does not function as described. For example, after I say "Alexa, pull up channel 113 on cable" she acknolwedges command execution however cable box nothing changes on my cable box. I suspect this has something to do with use of One connect box that is tied to my Samsung Q7 smart TV. But who knows. Besides from what I have read, Alexa/Cube has very limited functionality with xfinity services. For now you can only use commands to change channels by number or name. No on demand stuff or changing channels by using partial/commonly called names (for local channels), i.e "pull kcpqdt on cable" vs. switch to "q13 Fox", as it is commonly known/called in Seattle area. My advice...stick with the remote!
- Limited functions on stand alone use of Polk Magnifi sound system. I can't seem to connect with the Alexa app using BT function which limits my use to controlling volume on the device. If I want to change input to Bluetooth from optic (or vice versa) on my system I have to do so manually.
- Cube does not support calling or messaging functionality. Also, I do not like the fact that rest of the Echo lineup requires subscription to Skype, and not allow you to pick your own/existing provider (like Verizon for us), in order to utilize this function.
- Commands have to be said exactly how they are inputted in routines otherwise Alexa will not recognize them, even if the difference is as minor as singluar (light) vs. plural (lights). You have to say things the EXACT way (and right spelling/pronounciation) otherwise you will end up repeating yourself over and over.
- Your voice search for programs must specify the provider otherwise it will only pull up what is available on Amazon Fire TV. For example, if I say "play despicible me 3", it will only show purchase option thru Amazon whereas it is free on Netflix, which is already tied to my Fire TV account.

I would like to start this review by saying thank you Fire TV Cube! I am a proud Cord getter from a cord cutter earlier and you made this as a possibility for me (now I have specific reasons to get a cable, I will explain later, and how Cube helped me to decide in its favor). Hence I would like to give it five star due to below reasons. I have divided my review into two parts Short term and Long Term feedback. Hence, to get a full understanding, please read entire review.
1. Know what you are getting in Short term!
This is a voice control for multiple source you can see on your TV, it can switch sources, change volume levels, even if you have a sound bar or external speaker, change channels, Switch TV on and off etc. These are its basic functions. If these works for you, you are getting at least what this machine is supposed to do with you in short term. And this perfectly worked for me on my Samsung TV, JBL Sound Bar and Sony Blue Ray Player, TV Antenna. Also because it has IR Blaster it is not a remote control, hence don't set your expectations as such at least in short term. It is NOT remote, it is just a different experience.
2. Long term! Cube just grows on you over a period of time.
Cube has a learning curve and you may come across so many features that it will take some time to learn all of them. Now since this is not a review for standard Alexa features which you get from Cube as well, I will try to stay away from it and just focus on core Cube features from a TV control standpoint. Below are my experiences and I have tried to stay away from technical features as I wanted to make sure I put a technical skill of Cube into perspective of daily experience.
1) I have kids in my home and they keep themselves glued to TV for lot of time . Hence just the ability for me to say to cube to Switch off or on TV is return of investment. If we go on table for dinner and instead of trying to find remote, I can say to Alexa Cube to just switch off. And sometimes I do take advantage of forcefully switching off TV or pausing it when I need kids attention (I wish Alexa can recognize or take my commands over kids sometime when we run into disagreement and if voice parental control can be added as a feature in future - again my Wishlist is long :)) . Hence it certainly works for me as a parent.
2) Ability for Alexa cube to hear from far is phenomenal. In fact I have a very large living space where I have my TV and cube, sometimes I will be calling cube approx from 30 feet away and it just responds like I was talking in its ear. This feature is of great help, and acts as hands free for simple commands like "Alexa, Mute", “Turn off TV”, “Switch on Patio Lights”, etc..
3) Great control even for very small kids: Specially my younger one wakes up 6 am in morning when it is sometimes too early for me to wake up and put something for him on TV, when he sometimes demands it specially during weekends. He is 4 year and now he can put his favorite TV show on his own just by saying few words. He does not need to fondle with remote where he hardly understands any buttons, He puts Netflix on his own like "Alexa, play Super why on Netflix".
4) Proud Cord Getter: Now we were encouraged by our 4 Year son putting his favorite episodes on his own in Netflix. But we wanted to limit his Netflix and wanted him to watch live TV shows etc. which are more informational in nature and well programmed towards kids overall entertainment and knowledge like wild life, science etc. and it was only available on TV channels. Hence, we researched a lot what works best with cube if we get cable. After comparing between Direct TV, Sling and Hulu - and we decide on Hulu just due to its channel selection and compatibility with cube. And we were pleasantly surprised. Now if I just say "Alexa, Tune in to Universal Kids on Hulu" - Cube will switch on TV, Open Hulu App, and change to Universal Kids on Hulu". My 4 year son could repeat the same statement and it worked absolutely perfectly. This brought cable and live TV shows into our life (where earlier we just used to watch from local antenna as it was so frustrating to scan through multiple channels that we simply got rid of cable earlier). Now I can watch my favorite TV channels without fondling with remote, it works with kids as well.
And now did I tell you that we are totally remote free. Between I didn’t mention earlier I have a 11-year-old and he is like a pro talking to Cube for various functions (few of them are complex maneuvers you get to know only when you spend some time). He found out, Cube software was recently updated where it can mimic standard remote functions like Scroll Up, Down, Right, Select (apart for other options like in certain cases it shows options a number options). Hence, if he is using Cube he doesn’t needs remote at all.
Technical Spec: Samsung Led HDTV, JBL Soundbars, Sony Blue Ray and Xbox. Internet at 300 MBps from ATT U-Verse. Cube is connected on cable with internet router for best performance. I am first few buyers of cube as I booked it in advance before it was released.
