From the manufacturer

What is an unlocked phone?

An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.

What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?

Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.

Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.

Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.

How do I set up my unlocked phone?

The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

    Cheap & Cheerful.

    Cheap & Cheerful.
I've had the phone for 48 hours now. I'll update my review if time changes any of my opinions about this phone. At this point, I feel like this would be the perfect phone... except for the camera. The camera is pretty darn bad. Before this phone, I had the Nexus 5, which really was perfection but I'm hard on my electronics and the Nexus was the top of what I was willing to spend on a phone. After accidentally dropping that phone in a body of water, I seriously considered getting another one used but I'm glad I took a chance on the Moto G instead.I use my phone to make actual phone calls (I know, who does that?) and I've gotten a lot of positive feedback on the call quality. Everything sounds great on my end. I have yet to test it with an earpiece or headphone-with-microphone set up; I'll update when (if) I do.The phone hooks up easily and reliably with the Bluetooth in my car. It also hooks up easily with the Bluetooth in my speaker bar in my living room, which is something that wasn't reliable with my old Nexus. I'm really enjoying throwing Amazon Prime Music to my speakers when I'm hanging out at home. The Bluetooth also easily grabs info from my FitBit throughout the day.I do a lot of texting/Hangouts/Facebook messaging and everything is speedy, though Hangouts and texts aren't coming together as automatically as I would like. I also use a lot of fitness apps like MyFitnessPal, Pact, and FitBit and everything runs like butter. I love how little bloatware was loaded on the phone and I'm actually enjoying using the Assist and Alert apps that came with the phone. I haven't tried anything requiring GPS but will update when I do.The battery life is impressive! It arrive half charged and I did all my phone set up and first day abuse without charging (even updated the operating system!) and I was still left with a quarter charge by bedtime. I charged it fully overnight and I've been playing with it heavily since then, downloading apps, casting Netflix to our Chromecast, streaming music to our speakers, wifi and Bluetooth on at all times, made two hours worth of phone calls, took a ton of (bad) pictures, let curious family members fiddle with it, and 24 hours later, I still have 15% of the battery left. The one thing that stinks about the phone is the camera. I know the best camera is the one you have with you, but I think that's only true if the camera has the ability to take a focused picture. I've downloaded and played with six different camera apps so far and some have helped (A Better Camera is the best one I've found so far) but it's a lot of work to take a picture of a still life, forget capturing the antics of a puppy or a toddler.I don't mind too much as I have a very nice point-and-shoot that lives in my purse but it would be difficult to use it for the more practical pictures I want my smartphone to take (ie, the ingredients in a recipes from a cookbook, paint samples at the home improvement store, the license plate of a car, a price sticker.) Maybe the next system update will help with this. I would rank the picture quality as slightly better than the camera I had on my Razr in 2006 but below my Galaxy 2. I took a few pictures for this review and included the best one I was able to massage out of the camera. It was taken it bright diffused light with the camera balanced on a flat surface and I still had to take several shots to get an in-focus picture. I've found it to be useless with a moving subject and/or dimmer lighting.I'm thrilled with everything but the camera at this point and would heartily recommend it to anyone wanting a budget smartphone, so long as they heed my warnings about the camera!

Warning - the phone ships as of the date of this review with KitKat 4.4.3, and there are nasty bugs in it that cause the phone to lose connection with the micro SD card, and then tag the card as damaged. With only 8gb of main storage, that's a fatal flaw for this phone.

A few specifics. On the Motorola Android support forums, they're dense with memory card dismounting and being falsely tagged as damage problems. It's not just me. Some people encountered the bug when upgrading to 4.4.4 and now can't make it go away. Many encountered it in 4.4.3. I couldn't get a 32gb class 10 card to work, although I think it may be that the phone had a card status cached and failed the card without really checking. I found an old 16gb card that's probably a class 6, and it IS working. So, old small slow microSD cards work OK... I'll re-verify whether the 32gb class 10 works or not in a day or two and update this review.

NEW INFO: Upgraded to 4.4.4, as have many based on the forums. The upgrade says its whole purpose is to fix the SD card problem, and IT DID. I took a 64gb Class 10 card and put it in the phone. The phone complained about the card not being right, but a new unformatted 64gb card SHOULD produce that response. I formatted it (on the menu it says "erase"), the card mounted itself with the proper amount of free space, and that was it. Exactly as it should be. Happiness.

It really is a lovely, inexpensive phone. Screen quality is really nice, the camera is good enough for what I use it for, the user interface is close enough to my main phone (a Razr Maxx HD) that there was no learning curve. It's not the fastest phone I've ever used, but every bit as fast as my Razr Maxx HD which is a bit over two years old. The battery life is good, when the phone's new. The phone is pretty much exactly what I wanted for an inexpensive second phone for international travel.

Now that you can use a class 10 card, should you? It's not easy to find high capacity (64gb) class 6 cards (but I did find one, cost me a bit more than a class 10), and class 4 were never available over 32gb as far as I know. I did a test with moving a dozen albums into the card and then back out, with the 64gb class 6 and with a 64gb class 10. There wasn't any noticeable difference. May be detectable if it was a lot more data, but for now, if you've got a class 6 of the size you want, use it, don't worry about buying a new one. If you've got class 10 cards, you're also good. Having hunted down and purchased a 64gb class 6, I'm going to stay with that, and put the class 10 back in my GoPro.

I can also say that moving data onto and off the class 6 card is WAY faster than it was with 4.4.3, so they fixed the memory management in many significant ways.

Great value phone. NOW you shouldn't hesitate, just make sure to upgrade to 4.4.4 as soon as you get it.

I have used the Moto G 4G model for 4 months after switching from an HTC One M7 (2013). The last three smartphones I used had some issues that have left me unable to fully enjoy using them. Whether it was aging and slowing hardware (iPhone 3G), lack of software updates and developer support (One X+), or an underwhelming battery life (One M7), I was never entirely comfortable with any one smartphone. 4 months into my time with the Moto G 4G, I can confidently say that the streak is broken. It may not have the fastest CPU or GPU, but it's fast enough for what I need and can hang in there during the occasional gaming session; it has been among the first to receive software updates among manufacturers with a growing developer community on XDA; it has an outstanding battery life that puts most Android phones to shame, giving me a consistent 2 days of use with 2-3 hours screen time. And best of all, the 4.5" 720p screen never reminds you of this phone's budget origins. The Moto G 4G does everything I need it to, and then some. Moving down from a 2013 flagship, I have been very comfortable with this 4.5" contender that punches well above its weight class.

The only real pain points I constantly feel are the 1 GB RAM and the terrible camera. Although the phone runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat smoothly, it often runs into memory management problems, aggressively closing apps and refreshing browser tabs. Take this into consideration when moving from something like a Galaxy S4 or Nexus 4. And if mobile photography is important to you, look elsewhere, because the camera module on the Moto G will disappoint you with its lack of detail and aggressive noise reduction. The only positives are the auto-focus and LED flash. For reference, the 2 MP camera on my old iPhone 3G can consistently snap better shots than the 5 MP module on the Moto G.

Budget phones are all about compromise. What are you willing to give up in order to get the best value for the price? In my opinion, the Motorola Moto G makes the *right* compromises to become one of the best value Android phones in the past year. When considering the Moto G, whether it be the original 2013, 4G LTE, or 2014 models, it is important to think about what you *want* in a phone, and what you *need* in a phone. The Moto G is not a high-end device. But in practice, it more than makes up for it with a great user experience that will satisfy the average user. The question you have to ask yourself is whether those flagship devices are worth 3-4 times more or 3-4 times better than what Motorola provides at $179.99-$219.99 (now $199.99 for the 4G model). The answer for me was no. The Moto G gives you an inexpensive (but not *cheap*), unlocked, off-contract device with excellent performance at a fraction of the cost. The Moto G is arguably one of the best, if not the best, values you can get in a smartphone today.

    Pros:
-Inexpensive cost for high-performance off-contract phone
-The 4G model has a pentaband 3G radio; no need to choose between "GSM" and "Global" models
-4.5" 720p screen is one of the best in this price range (smaller size may be preferable for some users, such as myself)
-microSD card slot for external storage
-Fast software updates (so far); currently running Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Android 5.0 Lollipop on the horizon
-Well-optimized and smooth user experience thanks to minimal software skin
-Excellent battery life that, depending on your setup, could get you 24+ hours of use
    -FM radio
-Unlockable bootloader (VOIDS WARRANTY, UNLOCK AT YOUR OWN RISK)

    Cons:
-Only 1 GB of RAM and aggressive memory management make multitasking painful; depending on your usage, you may see constant background app closures and refreshing
-Awful 5 MP camera. If smartphone optics are high on your priority list, look elsewhere and be prepared to spend more
-Lack of internal storage for the 4G model; many apps do not support moving to the SD card, so only ~5.52 GB on the 8 GB model are available to install apps
-Non-removable battery. This seems to be a compromise for the slight water-resistance. However, it does appear that you can use a Torx screwdriver to get to the battery if needed
-Low-end CPU and GPU could make gaming a challenge for some demanding apps

Good graphics, fast, not too big so it's easy & comfortable to hold. Well built for the economical price paid.Camera not the best. Universal model is loaded with AT & T apps that cannot be removed without rooting. Volume is adequate. Did not buy to play games or for taking pictures, so the camera is exactly what I need it for. I am happy with the purchase & would recommend it for anyone that doesn't want a camera that takes flagship pictures.
