Solid offering for the price, relatively quiet, poor remote design.
3 Stars
Solid offering for the price, relatively quiet, poor remote design.
If you can put a regular window AC unit in, then you really shouldn't buy one of these portable things. Full stop. A regular window unit is going to be cheaper for the same cooling power and also a fair bit more efficient because it uses the outdoor air to cool the condenser. It also puts more of the loudest parts of the mechanism outside, which generally helps with noise, at least at the margins. But window units don't work everywhere you might need A/C. For me, this was a purchase for my elderly parents and my parents now can't easily pull a heavy window unit in and out of the window at the end of the season. Where they live, they won't need to run it constantly all summer and so the fact that it is a bit less efficient is somewhat less of an issue.Installation was not particularly hard, but the design of the thing you put in the window and plug the exhaust hose into could definitely be better. I ended up having to get out a saw and cut/shorten one piece to make it fit, which is what they tell you to do in the instructions. Of course, once you cut that adjustment piece to size, that limits the size of future windows you can install the unit into easily. Since this is theoretically something you can roll from room to room, they probably should design a window mount that can adapt easily to almost any size window opening without tools. Instead, they seemed to want something a bit more solid/durable, but far less easy to shift into multiple, different-sized openings. I will say that they do at least give you enough insulating foam pieces and such so that if you are planning to just put it one place and leave it there for the season, you can get a pretty nice seal, even if you are only moderately handy. In most windows, you can likely achieve an installation that is not going to let in bugs, rain, etc. or rattle while the unit runs.I also like the fact that, for a reasonably powerful room AC, it isn't crazy heavy. I think my small window unit from a few years back is considerably heavier. You may still need two people to get it up the stairs, but it wasn't too bad to get it into the location where I wanted to set it up. Note that it does need a level floor, so if you have an older house without level floors, you are going to have to level it. I did that by cutting a small piece of plywood for it to sit on, and leveling that. See the picture for an idea on how to install this properly in an old house with very uneven floors. It is also fairly sleek and nice looking, and I like that the vent on top automatically closes up to keep out dust and make it look better when it is not running. There is only so much you can do for something the size of a dorm fridge with a big white exhaust hose sticking out the back of it, but I thought they did a nice job with the exterior design. The build quality seems good, no weird rattles or shaking, kind of what you'd expect to get from a big, established company like Honeywell.I thought the noise level was somewhat better than I was expecting, and is likely at least tolerable for a bedroom for most people. It is certainly not silent and on the highest fan speed it generates a lot of white noise, but I didn't find it excessively noisy, even when the compressor kicked on. Note that no matter what fan speed you put it on, it has to cycle through several different modes in order to regularly expel the moisture from the coils and so you will hear it flip back and forth between these modes as it runs. That might be distracting if you are sleeping right next to it, so it has a sleep mode that basically lets the temp slowly rise for a while and reduces the cycling to let you get to sleep, and only starts cycling after you are likely asleep. Probably better than nothing, but I'd still put it as far from the head of your bed as possible if you have to sleep in the same room with it. You can also set a time delay to either turn it off after a set number of hours or turn it on after a set number of hours, which is handy if you want to leave it off most of the day and turn it on just before you get home from work, etc.The remote control looks nice and has a big display on it, but its functional design is almost comically poor. The button to change the system mode is located directly below the temp adjustment, meaning that if you are fumbling in the dark to try and make the room cooler half-asleep, you have an excellent chance of turning the mode from A/C to fan only or into the dehumidifier mode instead. Because the buttons are tightly spaced together, I've now accidentally changed the mode, fully awake during the day, more than once. So yes, the remote does work, and all the functions on the main panel are faithfully replicated on the remote, even the ones you will never need or use a remote for. But clearly nobody thought about somebody waking up hot at 2AM and just wanting to knock the temp down 2 degrees in the dark, which strikes me as a kind of a core function for an AC remote control.Overall, I am fairly satisfied with this unit. It seems reasonably well-built, reasonably quiet and powerful enough for my needs. Yes, the remote control is badly designed but I didn't buy it for the remote. I wouldn't buy this for a unit you want to constantly move room to room, unless all the windows you are connecting it to are the same size, and even then I wouldn't be that excited to reinstall it in a new window 2x a day, even if, unlike me, you have level floors everywhere. I think it was a reasonable value for what I paid for it.

There doesn't seem to be many reviews for this unit and what there are, are pretty mixed. Not sure why because I'm really happy with this AC unit. This is the first AC I've ever owned, so I don't really have anything to compare it to though. I bought it when we had the unprecedented heatwave in the Pacific Northwest, it got to over 108 where I live. AC is still pretty rare here since it's unusual to even get higher than 90 or so.
I have the unit in my second floor living room (high 10ft ceilings, it gets HOT up here, even when outside temps are in the 80's) with an open concept layout, so my kitchen and dining room is also part of the big living area. There is a south facing glass sliding door onto my deck that gets very hot in the summer. Also, I have a split level, so the area for the stairs is also open. I don't know what the sq ft is of all that, but for the size of the unit, I'm pleasantly surprised by how well it does.
This AC unit does a good job of keeping the whole area comfortable on hot days, so far mid-90's and above outside. I have it set to 72 degrees inside and as long as I close all the curtains and turn it on early before it gets hot inside, it doesn't seem to struggle. I'm happy with the level of cooling.
Noise level isn't any worse than having a fan on even when the cooling kicks on. I have had no issues with water leaking or dripping. Luckily, the perfect location for it is right by my front room window and a dedicated outlet that I use for my electric fireplace. The window exhaust kit that came with it could be a little more robust, but it installed in my vertical sliding window okay. I had planned to buy new foam to beef up the window insulation, but it hasn't been necessary so far.
The only thing I was unhappy about is that it took a couple weeks to get here and seemed to bounce around A LOT within Fed Ex's network, sometime going back and fourth between hubs. But that's not the AC units fault!

My ac unit was delivered with care and it was easy to unpack.

I have casement windows so I bought a special window attachment already set it up prior to the arrival of my unit.

Assembly of the hose was easy and the instructions in the operators manual was easy to understand and very clear. I was also able to register the unit and connect it to the app and using my home wi-if.

It does get a bit noisy when using the higher fan speeds for the cooling mode. For the fan mode, the fans are not as noisy. I was able to sleep through the noise even without earplugs. The noise of the unit just sounds like white noise and drowned out the traffic noise from outside.

It cooled my 450sq foot studio apartment really well, granted that I had closed the door to the bathroom and had dark curtains. I can also turn my ac unit on while I’m away from home in case I want to come home to a chilly apartment.

Overall it is a well built ac unit and I am very satisfied with my purchase.

TL/DR - Great portable a/c but with potential WiFi connection issues. Make sure your WiFi router allows you to choose between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band or you may not be able to connect this to your WiFi and Internet of Things (IoT) system. If you just need a portable air conditioner, you may look at other models. If the connectivity is important to you, make sure you understand your wireless router ahead of time.

If you're like me, you want all of your electronics to be connected to your Google Home or Alexa system. It allows for a lot more flexibility when you're away, scheduling to save electricity or just downright convenience of being able to control things from your phone or with your voice. That said, it's important to know that your IoT devices only work on your WiFi's 2.4 GHz band. If you happen to have a router like a Google Nest, Amazon Eero or one of the like, you may find yourself in trouble when it comes to this unit. Like most WiFi routers, these "smart" routers have both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Unlike most WiFi routers, they don't let you choose between them. Rather, the router itself chooses which band it believes a particular device should be on. For the most part, it gets it right...usually. In the case of this unit, it may not and you may find yourself with a "smart" air conditioner that isn't so smart. That said there are a couple of potential workaround solutions:

Typically, when devices on these routers connect to the 5 GHz band and they need the 2.4, you can carry them to the edge of your 5 GHz band and the device should automatically switch to the longer-reaching 2.4. Since this thing weighs about 65 pounds, moving it to the edge of your 5 GHz band may not be an option. What you may try instead is moving your router temporarily far away from where your A/C unit will be located. This may prevent the 5 GHz band from even reaching your unit and then it will automatically connect to the 2.4.

Another option may be to set up a "Guest" network in your Google Home or Alexa app. Typically these additional networks are 2.4 GHz as they are really only meant to provide additional users the ability to connect a singular device without affecting the speed or bandwidth of the entire home. Thus far, these are the only two workarounds I have found.

Smart technology and connectivity aside, this is a really nice air conditioner. I live in an old house whose HVAC system barely reaches the top floor, where my master bedroom just happens to be located. In the summer, it's not uncommon for my bedroom to be 10-15 degrees warmer than the floor below. Last summer was absolutely miserable and I found myself sleeping on my couch downstairs. This unit has been a game changer as far as being able to sleep comfortably. My room is a decent size but certainly isn't 450 sq ft. I also don't know that I would trust this unit to effectively cool an area that big so keep that in mind. A few oddities to note are
1. The remote. It has no backlight, which is kind of annoying if you're trying to adjust any setting at night in the dark. Even in low light, you can't see the screen. Perhaps they are relying on people to use the wifi or phone app option instead but either way, sizable design flaw there.
2. The unit comes with an exhaust hose and a plastic window partition with a hole cut out in the exact shape of the exhaust hose end to affix to. The idea is for you to be able to open your window as little as possible, slide the plastic partition in place and snap the exhaust end right into the partition. The issues come in 2 areas. The first is that the end of the exhaust hose sort of snaps in place but any slight movement or adjustment of the unit causes the end to pop out of the cut-out. You'll need to get the unit and the hose in the correct spot before you go trying to snap it into the window partition. The second is the partition itself. it comes with an extender that slides into the track of the partition for windows that are larger in size, which is great if you have the perfect sized window. If your windows are like mine, you'll find that the partition by itself is just a little too short and that sliding the extender in to the full width of my windows, now means that the extender is covering up the cut-out where the end of the exhaust hose goes. This means, you'll need some sort of tool to cut the plastic extender to size, which is kind of a pain.

Overall, I'd give this unit 4 out of 5 stars for the aforementioned attributes and issues. If you're just looking for a unit to cool down a room, you may want to find something less expensive. If you're looking for something with smart technology to offer added flexibility, make sure you know your WiFi router specs.
