Disappointing Warranty and Customer Service
I bought an Ego mower, believing I had solid warranty coverage. The product was listed as "renewed," which typically means it might have been an open-box item or had missing parts originally but was still in great condition. My mower arrived in perfect shape and had never been used.
However, the battery failed just two months after the warranty ended. The replacement cost for the battery alone is $400! I assumed the product was covered by a 90-day Amazon warranty followed by a 5-year warranty from the manufacturer, but this was not the case. Nowhere in the listing did it state that the 5-year warranty would be waived.
When I reached out to Ego, they offered no help other than confirming the battery was bad. No discount, no support, nothing. If I had known this would happen, I would have spent the extra $50 initially for peace of mind.
This lack of support and transparency is frustrating. I caution anyone considering Ego products to be aware of their poor customer service and misleading warranty coverage. Very disappointed.
It started with a bad back and trying to start a weedeater: mixed gas, pump the fuel bulb 10 times, gas running down your arm, choke has to be just right pull the rope ten times, and start over. I threw it on the ground went into the office and within 30 minutes I replaced the Weedeater, the mower, the hedge trimmer, the blower, and the chain saw. All the gas equipment went out on the curb with a free sign on them. Should have done this years ago!
My only issues come from the quality of the plastic used on some parts of the mower. The renewed unit came with one clip on the battery lid already having a stress crack along the attachment to the lid. I chalked that up to purchasing a refurbished unit initially. Unfortunately, after noticing that A LOT of debris ended up inside the battery compartment, I realized that the damaged side wasn't even engaging because of the stress point and gently flexed it more inward, greatly increasing the stress fracture. I figure a several hundred dollar mower ought to come with better protection for the battery compartment than this flimsy clip on each side. Secondly, I was pivoting around a tree with relatively soft bark and brushed against it and the plastic where the handle attaches suffered a fairly deep scar for such incidental contact. My old gas mowers didn't have much plastic, so I can't say they would have faired much better, but the plastic they do have didn't have broken tabs, scars, or other obvious defects.
My last complaint also relates to the plastic construction. Because the unit is plastic, a static charge has built up on the mower a couple of the times it was used and a considerable amount of fine dirt and dried organic matter was attracted to the entire body of the mower. I'm not sure this will continue, and it was relatively easy to dislodge with some compressed air, but my brand new mower that I'm not inclined to host down looked like it was well-worn after the first use. In contrast, my old Craftsman mower had instructions to hose it down and even had a female hose port to use while still running to dislodge any accumulated debris underneath the deck. It's nearly a decade old, cost half as much, and shines a bit brighter than my thrice-used Ego. But, as it's not a shiny new EV I'll be driving around town and instead a tool stored in a dark dirty shed, I think my "ego" will survive.
Overall, it is a great tool that does the job well. I've had no issues with the quality of the cut or the mower's reliability thus far, and I look forward to not having to do a another carb tune-up or replacement, and not aggravating my bad shoulder pulling a starting cord.
