    Great quality pencil!
    From the point of view of a mom and teacher. These pencils offer great quality and it would help out students a lot to own these.Eraser:Most pencils out there that are under a dollar or so have erasers that tear or discolor the paper. This one erases well although leaves a bit of a mark due to the dark writing (and also the reason for my 4 out of 5).Material:This is actually a wooden pencil and some pencils out there seem to have a mixture of plastic or rubber of some sort.Writing:This pencil writes beautifully. Upon writing straight, the darkness of the writing is beautiful. Upon pressuring straight down the pencil holds and doesn't crack the tip that much nor does it break the tip off (as cheaper pencils). It would be a perfect pencil to use on a scantron. Upon writing at an angle, the darkness is a bit less but still great and visible. Upon using the pencil for strokes from bottom up (as a primary child may do), the pencil also holds and doesn't crack or break.Overall a great buy and worth the extra expense. I posted pictures of writing and erasing also :D

    I remember using these in elementary school with fond sentimentality. I've never had an issue with these "budget" pencils. I've noticed a lot of other online reviews on other blogs give them a much undeserved thrashing. Even the newer Indian made version is high quality, in my experience. I have a few boxes of the old US made ones and a few boxes of the new Indian made ones and I've noticed no real drop in quality. The leads are well centered, the pencils are not warped, and the lead is very smooth with good point retention. The pencils have a nice, glossy yellow paint that isn't blotchy or rough like some Dixon Ticonderoga pencils. They are also very durable. My first time using one since elementary school was when I found one in a parking lot a few years ago that had obviously been run over and abused. Its eraser was shot, but there was a lot of wood/graphite left. I left it in my car and used it to jot down gas mileage notes for years. When I started getting more into pencils seriously again, I took it out and began using it more regularly. Even though the paint is cracked from being run over, the graphite itself is still perfectly fine. I use it on a daily basis for random notes at my desk at home. I highly recommend giving these pencils a try and trying not to take the other naysayer's opinions before giving it a try yourself.

    I've spent a long time searching, but no other pencils I've found can substitute for these ones. Not just the Dixon Oriole #2 pencil, but specifically the ones with the gold lettering and glossy durable yellow coat. The ones with black lettering are an acceptable second best. If you get a box with silver lettering, you might as well throw it out, but at this price, it's worth rolling the dice on. Per dollar, this is probably the most value I've gotten out of any purchase on Amazon.

    They're also pretty good if you just want to use them as normal pencils.

    Dixon 12886 Oriole Woodcase Presharpened Pencils #2 are the great for school work or, as I use them, for filling out puzzle books. The #2 pencil is soft enough that it doesn't cut through the pages and leaves a nice, dark impression on the paper. They sharpen well to a precise point. I have not had a point break even though I use these pencils quite often. They come 12 to a box and make a perfect purchase for the back-to-school student or the at-home puzzle fan.
