This phone is compatible with MetroPCS, however they will not let me continue my grandfathered in old phone plan. They want me to pick another (more expensive) "Flex" plan. I believe this is the case for any phone i switch to, not just because this is a special "dumb" phone.
As for the phone itself? Awesome. If you are looking for a phone straight out of 2005 that you can use on today's networks, this one is it. It doesn't lag. It not some Kai-os sudo-android interface running on slow hardware causing lagging and crashing. It's a true dumb phone. The software feels like a true dumb phone. But it also has a few tricks up it's sleeve:
- Bluetooth
- Dual Sims
- Calculator
- Flashlight
- Micro-SD card slot
- Something like 32mb of onboard storage
- Plays Mp3's. They can play in the background, so you can have music going while texting someone. Yes, this WORKS WITH BLUETOOTH headphones or your car, and yes, it actually sounds good. Play them off the tiny internal memory or a Micro-SD card. You can also plug the USB cable it comes with from the phone to your computer and access both the Micro-SD card slot and the phone's internal memory as separate drives. So you don't need a Micro-SD card reader on your computer.
- FM Radio (doesn't work with bluetooth headphones for some reason, but you can play it through the speakerphone)
- Upload your own ringtones and notification sounds. You can store them on the Micro-SD card or the internal memory.
- Camera. It's garbage. Even by early 2000's standards its garbage. But it does exist, you can send and receive pictures, store them internally, upload them to your computer through USB, etc. I don't plan on using it, but if my wife wants to send me a picture of something, at least i can see it. You kind of need a camera phone to do that with. Non-camera dumb phones typically don't receive pictures of have screens capable of rendering pictures. This one will do it.
It is a little big and cheap feeling, but I don't think dropping it will break it. It has kind of that "jitterbug" old people phone aesthetic more in real life than in the pictures. But as a millennial who's first cellphone was a Kyocera K7 Rave running on Virgin Mobile for 25 cents per minute, this phone has my approval as an official dumb-phone if you're trying to take your life back from phone addiction.

Zuerst einmal ein paar Worte zu den technischen Gegebenheiten: Bei diesem Telefon handelt es sich um ein nicht-internet-fähiges Dual-SIM-Gerät mit einem zusätzlichen Steckplatz für eine micro-SD-Karte mit bis zu 128 GB Kapazität und Bluetooth. Das Handy ist also auch als einfacher MP3-Player nutzbar. Die meisten “Dumbphones” nutzen heute eine technische Plattform, die Dual-SIM erlaubt. Das ist einerseits positiv, weil es die möglichen Anwendungsszenarien erhöht, zwei SIM-Karten maximieren aber natürlich auch das Risiko der Fehlbedienung. Wenn das Telefon wirklich als Seniorenhandy genutzt werden soll, sollte man das in seine Überlegungen einbeziehen.
Zwei weitere Sachen gefallen mit an diesem Telefon sehr gut: Da ist zum einen der USB-C-Ladeanschluss, heutzutage ein Muss, damit man nicht immer separate Ladegeräte mitnehmen muss. USB-C hat sich inzwischen zum Standard entwickelt und des ist gut, dass dieser Standard auch eingehalten wird. Zum anderen gefällt mir der wechselbare Akku. Dessen Kapazität ist nicht allzu üppig, allerdings kann man ihn leicht ersetzen, sollte er einmal schwächeln., denn sowohl von den elektrischen Werten als auchbezüglich der Bauform entspricht er exakt dem Typ NOKIA BL-5C, den man als Nachbau über Amazon günstig und in guter Qualität beziehen kann. Als SIM-Karten werden Nano-SIMS eingesetzt, in aller Regel lassen sich heute Micro-SIMs auf das Nanoformat durch eine Sollbruchkante reduzieren, aber auch jeder Handyshop stanzt ältere Micro-SIMs auf das passende Format.
Natürlich gibt es auch ein paar Schattenseiten: Das Einsetzen der SIM-Karten gelingt eigentlich nur mit einer ruhigen Hand und einer geeigneten Pinzette, mit der SD-Karte funktioniert das etwas besser. Die Menüs sind an der ein- oder anderen Stelle nicht ganz optimal übersetzt, die Bedienungsanleitung gibt über viele Funktionen des Geräts nur rudimentär oder gar nicht Auskunft.
Das Telefon ist nicht nur als MP3-Player zu gebrauchen, sondern hat auch eine 2-Megapixel-Rückkamera mit an Bord, die ist, bei gutem Licht wohlgemerkt, gar nicht so schlecht. Zudem lässt sich eine auf der Oberseite verbaute starke LED als Taschenlampe verwenden. Damit ist das Telefon mit wenigen, aber sinnvollen Features ausgestattet - nicht nur die Plattform ist damit auf der Höhe der Zeit. Die Ladebuchse und die Kopfhörer/Headset-Buchse (3,5 mm-Klinke) ist an der Unterseite des Geräzs verbaut und vor Feuchtigkeit mit einem dicken Stopfen geschützt. Das bedingt, dass man dickere Kopfhörerstecker nicht ohne Weiteres an das Telefon anschließen kann.
Sprachqualität: Ohne Fehl und Tadel, die Verbindung klappt sehr gut.
Bedienung: Im Groben und Ganzen überzeugt das Bedienkonzept - es dürfte sich vielen Senioren, die früher schon mal ein Handy (z.B. von SonyEricsson, Motorola oder Nokia hatten) erschließen. Durch den vollständigen Verzicht auf alle “Smart”-Funktionen bedient sich das Gerät wie ein Handy vor zwanzig, fünfundzwanzig Jahren. Das dürfte der Zielgruppe (und jedem, der ein einfaches und robustes Handy hauptsächlich zum Telefonieren sucht) entgegenkommen.
Fazit: AGM Mobile legt mit dem M9 ein ordentliches Telefon vor, bei dem sich die Features und die Bedienbarkeit gut in der Waage halten. Das Gerät ist gut verarbeitet, hat ein großes und klares Display und gut ablesbare Tasten. Wenn durch Kinder und Enkelkinder ein wenig Unterstützung bei der Einrichtung des Geräts vorhanden ist, dürften Senioren mit dem Telefon gut klarkommen. Die Optik des Handys ist angenehm. Insgesamt kann ich für das Seniorenhandy eine Kaufempfehlung aussprechen.
