Excellent sub-woofer. Ticks all the boxes, especially when at sale price!

Excellent sub-woofer. Ticks all the boxes, especially when at sale price!
We were lucky enough to buy this powered sub-woofer on sale for $249 AUD. Based on this purchase price it is a fantastic value for money purchase. It produces clean tight bass and sub bass frequencies. It covers around 26 to 200Hz but this will depend on the signal source going in. We are using a dedicated sub-woofer output on the main amp and have no idea what frequencies this actually puts out. Technically a sub-woofer is below audible bass frequencies, specifically felt as vibrations rather than heard, but these days sub-woofers are used as general bass reinforcement and this Yamaha does this really well. It is fairly heavy and bulky but that is unavoidable due to physics. It doesn’t auto power on and off with signal so you will need to manually switch it on and off. It comes with a nice quality mono RCA to RCA cable to connect an amp output to the sub-woofer. The cable is long enough for most installations. This is the ideal powered speaker to reinforce your system if it suffers from bottom end roll off or you just want more bass and sub bass frequencies. Buy two for larger systems as this will still be your best value for money solution. The best thing about this speaker is the clean, tight bass without drumminess, muddiness or obvious resonances.

This little puppy sits under my home office desk, connected to a pair of Ruark MR1 Mk2 powered speakers with my PC driving it all. There's a sub out line from the speakers, straight into the sub. The Ruark speakers are great by themselves but go to the next level with a decent sub.
The Yamaha gets plenty deep for music and fine for movies/games. The sound quality is clear enough for high quality music such as jazz and funk. I can pump it for heavier rock music and it holds it well.
I have this setup in a 3x3m home office and it is *plenty* of sound all up. I can crank it and hear it a room or two away with good quality background sound. I don't think this sub would be ideal for a very large room or Home Theatre set up in a large lounge room, but to be honest you'd be better starting with this than not have a sub at all.
For the price and function, this is fantastic.
Is this sub as good as my $1K+ SVS SB1000 pro 12" sub? No - it doesn't get as low, isn't as powerful, doesn't rumble the same way for lovies. But for a fraction of the price it does the job really well.

I bought this Sub to replace a 7 year old 100 W Yamaha SW that was working okay but I just felt the need to upgrade anyways. The price point was a major decision besides the fact that this SW was a lot more powerful and had fantastic reviews. The sub is paired with Yamaha NS-555, NS-333 and a NS-B500 as the centre channel in a 5.1 setup driven by a Pioneer VSX-S500 Slimline reciever. The room is not too big, about 6 x 4 meters and the speakers are spaced close to each other. So after the initial setup I had to play around with the switches at the back and the crossover freq on the amp to get the Sub to make its presence felt. What a huge difference this sub made to my setup. It now blends in with the 555's so well that the crossover is a very smooth refined rumble as the towers taper off and let the sub take over the lows. The highest volume I could manage on this sub was about a third of the way up with plenty of glass breaking bass. Any louder and I could end up shattering my floor to ceiling window. I would highly recommend this Sub to anyone looking to change up from an older low powered sub with value for money in mind. You really dont have to worry about your existing reciever/Amp cos this sub has plenty of options to connect to your existing set up and can be adjusted to bring out its best. I wont have to worry about a new sub for another decade if not longer!

The auto power feature does not work well and is one of the reasons I bought this one, so I’ve taken a star off. The sub will turn off rather quickly during a movie and then come back on when there’s an action scene, which is distracting and annoying. It’d be okay if you could set the timeout for it to power down, but you can’t.

Bass is nice and I’m trying to get used to manually switching it on, but usually I forget so it doesn’t get much use.

Nice price, nice to look at, and showed me just how thin the sound on my Yamaha receiver was without it. My old one (noname brand) died and I took so long replacing it with this that I'd gotten used to software solutions and other hacks. Nothing works as well as the real thing.
