5.0 out of 5 starsA wonderful read, and almost impossible to put down

Just finished reading this and couldn't put it down. Had to force myself to do so in order to get some sleep. I'd never read anything by Michael Connelly, and don't think I'd ever heard of him before. This apparently was his first published novel (in 1992) but you'd never know it, by the skill with which he writes, his totally believable characters, their equally believable dialogue, the racing plot, etc. This was a free gift from Amazon, and there was a choice of half a dozen or so novels to choose from. I chose this one at random, and am very glad I did. The only problem I had at times was understanding the dialogue. It's very much written in American English - and why not, because Connelly is an American author. But some of the phrases, terminology, slang, etc. baffled me a bit until I'd worked it out. Also loads of abbreviations throughout, i.e. CIA, IRS, FBI, etc. Ok, I know all of those and some of the others, but many of them I didn't know, had never heard of, and couldn't work out. But it didn't detract from the novel or my interest in it. And I loved Harry Bosch, the detective who's trying to get to the bottom of the whole thing, but who is being hampered from all sides by authority figures. I'll definitely be reading more of the Harry Bosch novels, and perhaps some of Connelly's other work as well.
