In looking for a replacement, I decided that:
1) While waterproofing would be nice, I had managed without it so far (none of my Kindles have had this feature, and I haven't lost one to water damage yet.
2) I liked the small form factor of my 6" kindle screen, rather than a bigger unit.
Therefore I decided the Kindle basic would suit me best rather than the newest 6.8" paperwhite. With an amazon deal and trade in on my two old Kindles I got it for a very reasonable price.
I was impressed with the build quality of this device. It does not have a soft back but I almost always use a case to protect the body and screen, so this doesn't really matter to me. The body feels sturdy and does not bend or flex.
The immediate thing to note is that my last kindle had 212dpi, and this has 300dpi. I can actually see quite a lot of difference in the screen rendering, which surprised me. The backlight is also very even, and can go from off to very bright, so good for any conditions. While the Paperwhite has more flexibility for night time light adjustment, I find the kindle basic 'dark mode' works well enough for me.
I also like that the kindle basic is actually slightly smaller and lighter than my old kindle, and a much smaller form factor than the paperwhite. I like to be able to put it in a bag or pocket, so this small size really works much better for me.
The kindle basic has good hardware. The page turning is rapid and responsive. I wish you could adjust the sensitivity however, as it's easy to accidentally turn the page, but this is similar on all the kindles I've tried. Zooming and rendering of pictures is definately faster than my old paperwhite.
I have not as yet tried any of the bluetooth or audiobook features supported by the kindle. I may update this review when I try it. If I do, I will be very glad of the massive 16GB of memory, which is a massive amount of storage for ebooks.
Perhaps the best feature though is the USB-C port. This allows for very fast charging (my old kindle took hours to charge). I believe the battery in the basic is only 1040mAh compared with the 1700mAh on the newest paperwhite, and the basic battery is rated to last 6 weeks rather than the paperwhite's 10 weeks, but I'm impressed with battery life so far.
Overall I'm really happy with my kindle purchase. It's worth noting as well that they can be ordered set to your account and are ready to go with minimal fuss. Kindles often go on sale with Amazon for Black Friday or just at random throughout the year, so if you see them reduced they really are a great buy and a lovely way to read, and this kindle, despite the basic moniker, is actually brilliantly specced and executed, and is a great option to consider.
I love it!!
I was always saying no no I love to read an actual in your hand, turn the page book however due to a disability I have one of my hands is now unable to hold the book securely and I struggle to turn the page.
This helps me soooo much! I can hold the kindle in my good hand (take my strong hand... Lol) as its light weight and only have to tap the side of the screen to turn the page!
It's fantastic quality and well made, I can turn the brightness up or down so it helps to read in the dtak and when reading outside it's amazing there is no glare from the sun and is exactly like looking at the page of a book.
I haven't used the Kindle near any water yet so can't comment on if it's waterproofness however given the reviews of others and how well made it is i would say that I won't have any issues with being in rain or near water.
It's a must buy if you ask me!
This is my first time with a kindle account and the new kindle was already set up when it arrived in the mail and ready to go pretty much straight away. This saved a load of hassle and headaches. It was easy to register and get a book, many of which are free. yep. FREE! First day with the Kindle i looked at the library and downloaded a vast collection of well known Classics for a quid. 25,000 pages plus in over 50 titles by 50 different authors. This would obviously keep me busy for a while and fill a large space and weight on my bookshelves if they were paper books, probably costing me several hundred pounds. Aweome. What lover of Literature and Poetry could find fault in that?
Here's the Good Points in buying this Kindle...
-Battery life is way better than tablet or phone .......MASSIVELY better, weeks actually if you take off WiFi
-Millions of cheap and free books and plenty of space to store them all
-No interference from phone calls, updates, Corporate assault garbage, intrusions are zero
-The ads only show on the sleep screen so never get intrusive or annoying (you really don't need to pay extra for the ad-free version but the option is there for you)
-Internet can be switched off easily
-Light as a feather and pretty much fits like a small paperback in your pocket (needs a fairly big pocket mind)
-easy to change size of text or fonts and look up information or words/translations. FANTASTIC because i need glasses these days and enjoy learning foreign languages. This i can read without my glasses albeit in daft enormous letters like a child's nursery book, gives me an option i didn't have with regular paper.
-never loses my page. Another thing i was worried about before buying because its so annoying to lose your place in an E Book. I can read 3 books concurrently and never lose my page place in any of them. The Kindle does this automatically but you can also manually mark them if you wish to. I would say its categorically impossible to lose your place in a book on a Kindle. FANTASTIC
-Easy and visible text anytime. I was worried about this before buying but reading in bright direct sunlight or low light or no light at all in darkness works dandy, better than paper books in fact.
Looking up words instantly is fantastically helpful and included free are multiple dictionaries and translators.
and now the Bad Points...
-Internet is as good as useless to use as a normal browser, its just for amazon kindle store. I personally didn't need this anyway and it wasn't a factor in buying it because i prefer to use my PC for using internet. If the browser is important to you then you are going to be disappointed.
-Flimsy case and not exactly tough or durable build quality. Older kindles were definitely more robust You absolutely need to buy a case to protect it from drops, this should be included really but its not and you have to spend a few extra bucks.
-Small. its pretty small at 6 inches (!) but i suppose thats just me eh? You can buy bigger ones but its always smaller than a paper book, a difference which takes a bit of time to get used to.
-Doesn't move too efficiently through screens and chapters, but singular page by page works OK. Slow response times and lags a lot when searching for index or notes at back of book, freezes frequently. I am not sure if this is me or the operating system? Luckily it doesn't need fast processing speeds because its only reading a book and you can just about get by. It seems to get confused easily, luckily not crashed yet though i am waiting for it to happen in future. Tablets and phones respond much better to reading or scanning texts and pages where big jumps are required.
-No built-in user manual or paper manual booklet included in the parcel. I had to look up instructions online or on youtube to figure it out.
-Navigation is pretty sluggish and awkward as regards the touch screen, again this is maybe because i got the smallest Kindle. I bought a stylus pen which really helps a whole lot. Could use a couple of buttons at the side really.
-Power off is a pain, it never wants to switch off, only "sleep" with the screen off. Not always clear if its actually off or on.
-No dedicated ports for anything. So no SD cards, Headphones or anything else but Bluetooth
Overall i am thrilled i got this. My only reservation so far is I don't know its longevity or how it will cope with updates etc (this is where technology always frustrates me, the constant need to update, throw away, buy a new one like a hamster on a wheel). This device saves me money because very large books (400 pages or more) are very expensive these days and much cheaper on Kindle. I can carry a vast library around with me as long as i can put up with a few irritations and the lack of the smell of freshly printed ink on new shiny paper books. I so love that smell, which is so redolent of my youth and education and so much part of the love of reading and language. I now have the option to buy on kindle or buy a paper book so all is not lost.
I am really glad i took this chance on a kindle and i recommend similar hesitant old farts like me to get one, they are actually really easy to use, and thats not a sell.

Ogni tanto mi da problemi con il wifi, nonostante risulti collegato e con il massimo delle ricezione, non riesco ad acquistare i libri….all’inizio pensavo fosse un problema di Amazon ma il problema si è ripresentato spesso.
Erster Eindruck vom Kindle 2022 -super-.
Jetzt muss er nur noch so lange durchhalten wie der Vorgänger.
