I’ve worked in IT for over 30 years so I expected this to be pretty straight forward but it was even easier than that. Eero have clearly thought through the setup process such that anyone who can read and follow instructions could have this up and running in 20 minutes. I was a bit disappointed that none of my techy know how was needed, lol.
Setup was really simple. Download the Eero app. Plug one of the Eero units into an Ethernet port (Ethernet cable is supplied) of your existing wifi router. Mine is a BT home hub. Power on the device. Follow the instructions on the app and your ‘gateway’ device is set up.
Then just place the other units in strategic places around your house one by one and follow the instructions on the app. The units will even tell you if they are optimally placed. Simples!
You have two choices when setting your gateway unit up. Either use the same network name and password that you currently have. Doing this will enable all your connected devices to reconnect to it when you disable your existing wifi network.
The second option is to create a new network name and password and change all your devices over to that new network. This was my preferred choice. Just leave the old network running and you’ll §still have connectivity for all your devices until they have been migrated across.
I now have super reliable wifi connectivity all over the house and out to the bottom of the garden - which is quite large. All my smart home tech can now speak to each other - even the smart bulb in the bar which is at the furthest end of the garden probably 15 to 20 metres from the nearest wifi point.
One added bonus is that the two Echo Dot’s that I have are Eero compatible which means that they too, are helping to extend the signal.
All in all, I have no complaints or issues with this product and I have found it to be 100% effective for my needs.
Anyway more interesting was the access point part for WiFi. In short - it's great for my one bedroom apartment, not different to my previous device, and now supports gigabit, however there is one massive but - in the app you can't specify 2.4 or 5hgz manually. You see - in other devices you would have 2 networks, one for each band. 2.4 is flat but greater range, and some IoT devices only support that. In eero there's only none visible network, and the band thing happens behind the scenes. And this is something you cannot control in any way. As a result, devices which support both bands may be switching between them often, resulting in poor connection stability as during the switch over some lost packets may occur.
If eero gave us option to set specific device to only use one band it would result in a more consistent experience. For certain devices it truly doesn't matter but e.g. for working from home where it breaks yournonline meetings briefly it's not.
And - lastly - I always wondered how big these things were, especially in comparison to single access point style routers - so here's a photo with a credit card to scale.

As the best we can receive from other broadband suppliers is currently FTTC, we needed to ensure the entire property was receiving the best WiFi possible.
These devices have largely worked flawlessly since install in February.
We have four Alexa Echo's that have the Eero Built in Feature but so far none are really utilised, three 6+ devices provide sufficient cover for our home.
Devices migrate between the Eero's around the house without problem and we've only had minor connectivity concerns with a very old fire tv stick that is in a built in wardrobe, so is very obscured which likely hinders the signal, shower we rarely have any issues with that device.
It was an expensive purchase but the app works excellently and we have been able to achieve the full spectrum of WiFi speed our ISO provides (in our case up to 76mbps) speeds internally within the LAN itself far exceed this for internal data transfer. I'm looking forwards to when FTTP arrives and we can get back on to a full fibre connection.
Only downside so far is that the more impressive data analytics are locked behind an Amazon/Eero subscription paywall which is very irritating.
Overall, These are great devices, work flawlessly and without any difficulty, worth the investment if you have WiFi signal problems around the home.
