There are different meanings of soft and for this product, soft rules out being supportive. I thought soft would be a soft fabric on the outer layer, or a soft consistent non-lumpy filling, but I still expected the pillow to retain some support. I bought this to alleviate my difficulty in sleeping with Fibromyalgia, a sight curvature of the spine and a shoulder tendon injury. It did not support my arm and leg sufficiently to align my spine while sleeping on my side. I would also not recommend this for a restless sleeper as I found it too heavy to keep switching from one side to the other. Probably better to buy two for each side but that wouldn't leave any room for the husband, despite having a super-king sized bed.
It is a very well made product and I might fold it lengthwise to firm it up and wrestle it into a home-sewn bolster cushion case.
